Top Standard & Wild Legend Decks – Fractured in Alterac Valley Week 2 – December 2021

Fractured in Alterac Valley expansion launched nearly 2 weeks ago, and it had a pretty solid impact on the meta. I’m saying “pretty solid”, because I honestly expected a bit more – current, early meta feels more like “Stormwind+” than a completely new one. Most of the strong decks from the last expansion, sometimes with a few new cards (like Buff/Libram Paladin or Questline Rogue) are still viable and the new Alterac Valley decks can’t really shine. Yes, OwlTK Warlock is good and Freeze Shaman is good, but the first one is just a variation on the Combo Warlock, quite similar in gameplay to the Fatigue Questline build we’ve seen last set, just with a different win condition. And Freeze Shaman, while being good, is… well, pretty boring to be honest. The meta slowdown promised by the new synergies and devs hasn’t happened mostly because combo decks are keeping slower strategies at bay. You can’t play Control if many decks can simply kill you from hand around Turn 8.

We would probably already have a balance update by now, but Worlds are happening as I’m writing this – Blizzard didn’t want to push out a patch right before the tournament. As a result, the tournament meta is like 80% combo, which is… quite interesting to watch, but not something players would want to face on the ladder. However, Celestalon has already confirmed that a balance patch is coming and it will hit many of the decks present at Worlds. I would assume that it will happen early next week – my guess is patch notes on Monday and patch itself on Tuesday. Not only Tuesday is the usual patch day, but devs definitely want to push it out before Christmas so they take a break in peace. Either way, we probably won’t have to wait long for it.

Fractured in Alterac Valley is not a great expansion so far – not because it’s bad itself, but because there’s still a massive lingering presence from the previous set. But with the right balance changes, in my opinion, it could be one of the best sets Hearthstone had in a while.
