Favorite card in the set. Neutral so you can use it with any class. Repeats a spell you cast. There are many awesome spells to cast. Pretty simple.

I use it for mindblast priest. 10 mana 15 dmg. Not op or anything. Just works pretty well.

That fact that this is neutral, only makes it stronger. 5/5

By far the best meme with this card is to play it on 9 with the Mage quest reward Time Warp, which will probably give you 2 extra turns. Now in standard there’s not much that will actually do but in Wild it might make the Giants version of the quest a little better.

This + Power Word Replicate for Priest will give you a board of 4 Archmage Vargoths (3 of them being 5/5’s) on turn 9. 17/21 worth of stats for 9 mana. If that board can’t be cleared, you can mind blast the following turn. If the board does get cleared you can use Mass Resurrection and then sit back an watch the fireworks.

You know there’s another usefull thing about this card in druid after reach 10 Mana wild growth gives 1 0 cost spell to draw a card if played that with this out that’s draw 2 cards. Definitely gives a better return if pull growth in late game.and with the draw being a 0 cost it doesn’t hurt you to hold out on using it unless you really need to try to pull something from your deck. Of course this is just a late game option there’s also fact if play this and wildgrowth it could be a better version of nourish for 7 Mana draw 3 possibly 4 cards and get a 2/6 body once you reach 10 Mana. Not a bad result for those times when top deck growth in late game.

I’m going to run Archmage Vargoth with Mage. To me, it makes sense. Cheaper spells with many to choose from. IMO, freeze Tempo Mage is on the rise. Frostbolt, Frost Nova, Ray of Frost, and Blizzard, name the spell, and this card will play it. It’s also a Spiteful Summoner, only thing is, no minion will come to aid you, but the value is still the same nonetheless. I like this card. 4/5 stars.

Can’t wait to see the twitch videos of people playing the coin the same turn

Flavourfull and very versatile card. There are so many combos possible with this card that it should see play sooner rather than later. Most fitting classes are obviously mage (tempo mage with a lot of cheap spells in particular) and hunter (zul’jin spell hunter comes to mind). However, there are other classes where the card might shine as well, especially in priest (mass ressurection or mind blast in particular) or druid. Shaman on the other hand might want to stick to electra. Altough it’s one time only effect, her advantage is the spell can be targeted, it costs 1 mana less and it’s effect is instant.
I will not be surprised if some insane meta breaking combo comes out.

      April 1, 2019 at 1:55 am

I was thinking the same thing. Zul’jin or Mage Tempo.

      • Catrina Muerte
        April 5, 2019 at 12:43 am

Big Priest LOVES this card, think about it, shadow essence, if it gives Vargoth then it goves you another free minion, with eternal servitude or ressurrect ur getting back 2 guys and with 7 mana res 4 minions if Vargoth is one of them then it happens again and you get a FULL board, not to mention other synergies since big priest runs all spells except for 5 minions. This is NUTS!

    • JoyDivision
      April 1, 2019 at 3:10 am

idk … the card is good but not in tempo decks. Imho the risk of actually losing tempo (by playing let’s say Frost Bolt on your own minion) is too high.

I see this in midrange decks that use a selection of spells you’ll benefit from regardless of rng outcome.

  13. Raostrich
    March 31, 2019 at 11:28 pm

Suggest you use this in hunter. It replays a beast summoning spell you used earlier that turn. Now Zul’jin plays both those spells… if it works that way (not sure). Regardless of whether or not you use Zul’jin that game, if you play Vargoth into Unleash the Beast, then you can summon 12/16 of stats on turn 10. Or you can play it on 7 with Animal Companion. Even if this card is better with damaging spells, I can see it having real solid play in hunter. Even with deadly shot, cybertech chip, dire frenzy (in the right situations), or even… may I dare say… The Beast Within?!

    • MrPoison
      April 1, 2019 at 3:25 am

Zul’jin doesn’t cast the spell of Vargoth effect, neither triggers spirit of the tiger’s effect. It was explained on the ING site (reveal site).

      • Raostrich
        April 1, 2019 at 9:14 am

Ah I see. I guess as long as Vargoth can replay the aforementioned spells, it still has impact on the turn it’s played. Sorry about my misinformed comment.

So easy 15 damage with priest or 20 if you have only one extra copy of face damage spell.
Or a great buff booster for aggressive classes.

  16. EksSkellybur
    March 31, 2019 at 8:49 pm

    Grand Archivist 2.0.

You play this with at least Drawing 2 Cards and all of a sudden you can make a Murloc or Tempo Deck for any Class. Now Everyone can have their own Aluenth!
You Play nothing but Flamestrike for Example and all of a sudden you control the board.

There’s just so much good stuff that Archmage Vargoth can do. He’s just too good to be handed out as “JuSt AnOtHeR TeCh CaRd”. Absolute 4 Star Card in terms of how you want to play the card, but in terms of Power, easily 5 stars or even 6 stars. if he’s that good. (As long he doesn’t die of course.)

    • EksSkellybur

Just rad the Text again: “Cast a Spell you’ve casted this turn.”

Dammit. But I’ll still Oblige to what I said. It’s just that I’m sometimes an idiot when it comes to reading.

Point being is that as long as you have this card, It’s going to serve you very VERY well.

Ok this card is just nuts mage will break this card before rotation with tempo mage drop this with missles and cinderstorm to bring pain. And priest otk are going to be more annoying for a bit.

  18. Minti
    March 31, 2019 at 5:45 pm

I like the fact that this card is neutral. It is like a better vesion of elektra stormsurge and she is still a very powerfull card.
Now all those value generating spells do make sence for mage. Like with magic trick etc. With 2x sorc spprentices you get a mage version of lyra.
For hunters and their always on poin shots it is even better. I do no think it will work with zul’jin but it still is a fine card ot put in that deck. It is a nice thing jul is getting a refined archetype. I was so hoping zul would copy the yogg spells but it is an interaction that did not happen.
FOr priest expet for mass ressurection you can posible stick a velen for one turn than play this and get 2x mind blasts that are essentally doubled. So here is your cloning gallery OTK enabler for priest that ressurect is so much less likely to happen than the OTK. And probably the only OTK that you can do with this card since al lother classes OTKs are target spells so you can kill yourself.
Basicly every value generating spell get super pumped and the new druid archetype would reap most benefit from this.
Twinspells will generate 2 extra copyes of the twinspell card. So with this you get a multicast effect from all those card geting triplespells. So cards like the 6 mana 5/5 whyvern with rush suddenly become a stampeede of 5/5 beasts whitch OP cards like the spellstone didn’t get that much. the 3/3 tokens boards were very easy to remove. And the 5/5 whyver is the best beast pet in HS so far. It is the best spell generated beast you can pull, so we may see more effects like it in the future.
The power level of this card is the same as bran bronzebeard. He basicly was in every deck. And while it does antisynergzes with some of the more powerfull single target spells it will not stick that much anyway. Just like brann it will eat removal or you will insta lose the value game.
And double board clear effects is the best usage of this thing. Double blizzards double flamestrikes. double holly novas double lightining storms, just name it and you get it. Especially the cheep board clears.
And boy oh boy those double arcane misiles and sparks just add in some extra spell power and you get your irst ever arcane mage deck. In wild you can splash with some Rhonins to get 3x arcane misiles and with the flamewalers you got great midrangy deck. But enough of wild most cards can find a usage there. For standart it will be staple troughout both the years it will see play. Ziliax and this will be the splash cards of every deck.
The bad thing is that unlike bran this is 4 mana. And at 4 mana there a lot more removal options. It does come with a good chunk of HP. Much like baron rivendare. It will be sticky enough if played on curve for some cheesy combos.
This card will make it to the streamers videos in no time.

    • Minti
      March 31, 2019 at 5:49 pm

Drakkari enchantress is still in play so you can still get this to proc a spells fair ammount of times.

    • Sergi-13
      March 31, 2019 at 6:26 pm

Believe me, that’s not even close to being as good as Electra

      • Skoopy
        March 31, 2019 at 11:59 pm

        Its far better than electra!!!

      • Skoopy
        April 1, 2019 at 12:14 am

Electra can do this once, immediately after you cast it, you cast it again. BUT you can only do this with one spell. And if Electra stays alive, no one cares. If you play Electra i may leave her on board. This Archmage you have to remove as fast as you possibly can, otherwise, you may not get a 2nd turn. Electra is situational, and not that flexible. This Archmage can kill you!!! Electra 3/5, only cause its a 3 drop and good with Haunting Visions. This Archmage 6/5!!!!

        • Nickus89
          April 1, 2019 at 1:25 am

I would argue this is worse than electra in aggro shaman, since electra allows you to cast targeted spells (lightning bolt, lava burst or rockbiter weapon), providing extra burst and instant effect. However, archmage might be comparable or even bigger treat in midrange/control archetypes that use non targetable spells.

        • Minti
          April 1, 2019 at 6:16 am

Elektra is elemental and she synergizes with al lspells. Being battlecry makes it even more valueablle for the class she is in. And double lava burs value is most likely the most possitive effect the archmage has unless he sticks and wins you the game :D.
But something came in mind for me with rockbiter. If you rockbiter the enemy hero Does your minions take 3 dmg each time they hit him? After all it is not a weapon effect.

And cost you almost an entire turn.

      • Greedyfly
        March 31, 2019 at 5:52 pm

True, but if you can hide Vargoth behind a taunt you would have the next turn to play more spells.

        • Soup And Salad
          March 31, 2019 at 6:09 pm

I guess, but Rebuke and Tirion probably make a better turn ten than Vargoth, Rebuke, and a four mana taunt.

If I play this in Rogue and he recasts a combo spell, will the combo effect go off, or just the basic effect?

    • StarPlatnum
      April 1, 2019 at 12:42 am

grand archivist will trigger the combo version as long as you’ve played a card that turn. i can only imagine the same would be true for this.

  21. Moltar
    March 31, 2019 at 4:04 pm

As a priest, play this, let it die. Turn 9 play mass resurrection and hope to get archmage.

Not sure if good or bad, but it’s an intresting card.

    • Phoesias
      March 31, 2019 at 4:34 pm

wow, your right, that sounds crazy, will it activate another mass rezz ?! as a priest main i love this card, works also great with Holy Nova or Mindblast.

      • Moltar
        March 31, 2019 at 5:00 pm

It won’t chain with a freshly resurrected archmage after the first activation because the end of turn phase already passed.

        • Rosfh
          March 31, 2019 at 11:08 pm

hes saying, rez into this and you could get another rez eot. but yeah. in the case you mention, same thing as rag off kelthuzad or something

        • Phoesias
          April 1, 2019 at 9:06 am

what i mean is, if you rez him with mass ressurection, will it cast another mass ressurection at the end of your turn ?

it says “this turn” so i think it should cast another one

          • Moltar
            April 1, 2019 at 10:08 am

Yes, that’s the situation I was depicting in the first post.

            – Let archmage die during the game.
            – Later play mass resurrection and hope to resurrect archmage.
            – At the end of the turn, another mass resurrection will be cast, almost filling your board.

Nothing more will happen, even if another archmage is resurrected afterward because the “end of turn” phase already passed.

Not sure if it’s a deck defining combo or if it has any usefulness, but is a cool situation.

        • Phoesias
          April 2, 2019 at 9:06 am

ah ok i know what you mean and think your right. The second Archmage will not cast MassRessurrection AGAIN cause the “end of turn” phase has definetly alrdy passed

So max value is: Cast Mass Ressurrection -> Summon Archmage -> will cast another Mass Ressurrection – Summon another Archmage -> END.

  22. Nidnam1252
    March 31, 2019 at 3:42 pm

    Turn 6: Heistbaron Togwaggle

Turn 7: Archmage Vargoth + Wondrous Wand (Draw 6 cards, they all cost 0)

Or, if you’re behind on board, Play with Zarog’s Crown to summon 4 random Legendary minions

  23. NoFaith

Druid: turn 2 double biology project + Vargoth -> next turn 9 mana crystals

Thats what i call ramp 😀

Stats are only slightly below what you’d expect for his mana cost, so you only need to get a small amount of tempo or value out of his ability for this to be good. Best combos I can think of (with spells that cost 6 or less mana) are…

Druid: Dreamway Guardians, Landscaping, Force of Nature for token Druid. Also goes well with Ferocious Howl, Swipe, Oaken Summons.
Hunter: Animal Companion, Unleash the Beast.
Mage: Arcane Missiles, Research Project, Arcane Intellect, Cinderstorm, Unexpected Results, Blizzard.
    Paladin: Consecration, Avenging Wrath
Priest: Divine Hymn, Mind Blast, Thoughtsteal, Holy Nova, Power Word: Replicate
Shaman: Elementary Reaction, Feral Spirit, Lightning Storm, Eureka!, Rain of Toads
Warrior: Dragon Roar, Shield Block, Heavy Metal

I think this guy is absolutely nuts. 5/5

  28. Soup And Salad
    March 31, 2019 at 2:30 pm

Archmage Vargoth really looks like one of those cards that seem amazing but will probably end up being just okay at most like Contess Ashmore or Dollmaster Dorian.

The sort of spells this is best used with are obviously ones that don’t target. The only issue with that is most combos with it are going to cost at least six mana, perhaps pricing it out of most aggressive decks, and, outside of draw spells, most of them seem a bit too mediocre for serious constructed play.

Vargoth will probably end up being in the same boat as Ashmore as cards that aren’t quite good enough right now unless I’m missing something.

    • Joeydungee
      March 31, 2019 at 2:40 pm

Do you think it could make it’s way into mindblast priest? Since it’s losing shadow visions, the extra mindblasts vargoth casts could win you the game

      • Joeydungee
        March 31, 2019 at 2:43 pm

        Turn 9 Alexstrazsa
Turn 10 Vargoth+ 2 mindblasts, then end of turn Vargoth casts the final lethal mindblast

      • Soup And Salad
        March 31, 2019 at 2:45 pm

I don’t think Mind Blast Priest will remain viable post rotation. All of the mana cheating used to get both Malygos and Velen out in the same turn and Radient Elemental are leaving Standard.

Even if they weren’t, I don’t think this would really fit in. The Clone combo version of the deck certainly wouldn’t at least seeing as Cloning Gallery and Coins are quite often played in the same turn as the Mind Blasts.

        • Joeydungee
          March 31, 2019 at 2:49 pm

That’s a good point. I still wouldn’t be surprised if a control priest (with dragons) with a potential mindblast+Vargoth combo win con saw some play

        • Benoitballs
          March 31, 2019 at 3:08 pm

Alex + double Mind Blast + Vargoth is a kill against any deck without healing.

Problem is Priest is losing Scream, Duskbreaker, and Anduin. IF we see a viable control Priest, I could see Mind Blast + Vargoth potentially hitting the meta, but I’m not sure if control Priest will be able to last long enough to get to its kill turns.

          • Soup And Salad
            March 31, 2019 at 3:17 pm

You can accomplish that right now with Holy Fire instead of this card.

          • Benoitballs
            March 31, 2019 at 3:43 pm

True, it’s a matter of 5 damage more burst. So you have to stay above 20 Health to not die to Priest.

It’s really conjecture though; Mind Blast was only good due to Anduin + Shadow Visions.

    • StarPlatnum
      April 1, 2019 at 1:04 am

Mass resurrection is what you’re missing. (standard players have no quick way to get the minions out, but i’m a wild player so it doesn’t apply to me) it gets you two copies of this card plus 2 copies of 2 other large minions. all you have to do is make sure he dies. this is a 4th priest legendary IMO. I could also see this as the only minion is spell hunter. (again, wild player) it also would be a fun card in espionage rogue

      • StarPlatnum
        April 1, 2019 at 1:12 am

even if you’ve played more than 3 minions and don’t resurrect it, it’s still a great card to have in your rez pool. will be a mainstay in wild big priest and if blizzard prints a single “cheat out a minion” card in 2 years, it’ll be a mainstay in standard big priest

      • Soup And Salad
        April 1, 2019 at 5:19 am

If a Big Priest were to play Vargoth, it would backfire quite often because of all the removal the deck plays. Plus, it really doesn’t do anything when pulled out by Barnes unlike every other minion in the deck, and while it can be useful when pulled out by Shadow Essence, it’s just a weaker Y’Shaarj at that point.

There are already minions in Wild Spell Hunter: Barnes and Y’Shaarj, and Spell Hunter as a deck plays too much removal and low impact cards that this would be worth playing. The risk of turning a Barnes play into a complete wet fart isn’t exactly appealing either.

        • StarPlatnum
          April 1, 2019 at 9:25 am

There was several top tier versions of wild big priest without barnes. Also by time you’re rezzing all your minions you’re not playing the removal spells anymore. Controlling what spells you play each turn is too easy for you to say that’s the downside. Adding this one card makes 8 cards in your deck summon double the big minions in a deck that wants to summon as many big minions as possible and the only requirement is that this minion has to die. Im sorry, I just cant see this card NOT being played in that deck

        • StarPlatnum
          April 1, 2019 at 9:42 am

As for spell hunter I didn’t mean in conjunction with bar’shaarj but instead, for the people who either dont have those legendaries or don’t like the near 50% chance you pull y’shaarj first in which case it’s usually a dead card. I will admit though, theres not a lot you can do in one turn to get that much value out of it.

    • DukeStarswisher
      April 1, 2019 at 7:01 am

I honestly think Ashmore was sleeping until mammoth rotates. The card is insane but hasn’t found a spot in the standard meta yet.

As for this card however, I agree. I think it is more fun to speculate what it can do than actually implementing it in a ladder deck.

Given that this card is what’s casting the spell and not you, the player, it at least shouldn’t count towards the quest in the same was as Secret Keeper doesn’t get buffed by cards like Masked Contender.

Also, I don’t think a deck playing Preparation will necessarily want to play this card.
