Top Standard & Wild Legend Decks – Murder at Castle Nathria Week 4 – August 2022

It’s been some time ever since the balance update happened, and I don’t have great news. Out of all the classes they tried to boost, only Rogue is performing well now. Some might even argue that it’s performing too well – I’m not sure if I would go that far, but I don’t think that Miracle Rogue is a particularly healthy deck. Most of the games boil down to “do I have an answer for their 10/10 minions or 10 attack weapon on Turn 4-5”. If yes – then you probably win. If no – then you probably lose. Of course, Rogue matchup is a bit more nuanced, but many games sadly boil down to that.

It’s hard to say whether it’s because of the patch, but we did have some kind of new decks popping up. The first one is Aggro Token Druid. It appeared out of nowhere and quickly became one of the best decks in the meta. It’s really straightforward, like those Druid build usually are – you make a wide board, play AoE buffs and hope to kill your opponent before they can stabilize. Simple? Simple. But effective.

The second one is Combo/Buff/Miracle Priest. It’s like a Naga Priest, but without all the Naga shenanigans, focusing only on the “combo” part with Boon of the Ascended as its main piece. Here the idea is to play Radiant Elemental (or two), drop all of your buffs, refill mana with Priestess Valishj if necessary, and then play Boon of the Ascended, copying the big minion. Now you have two huge minions, one of which can’t be silenced as a counter. The deck is very effective vs builds that have no way to answer 1-2 big minions, but in many matchups its basically a coin toss (similarly to Miracle Rogue, but to an ever bigger extent – if they can remove your pop-off turn, you usually have no other way to win the game, but if they can’t, they just die the turn after).

Sadly, the other three buffed classes don’t share the same effects as Rogue. Paladin is completely nowhere to be seen on the ladder. Demon Hunter is a bit more popular, but still far from good (Tier 3, which is below average). Warrior is… eh, somewhere in the middle. Enrage is kind of playable, but not great – and not many people attempt to play it anyway. No matter how you look at it, all three of those still need buffs. Or the top classes need more nerfs – I guess that it will be the mix of both.

I thought that they might do some balance updates in 24.2, but I was worried that the patch was already sealed and it turned out to be exactly the case. They can still push a smaller patch or even a hotfix a week or so later, and I think that they will, given that players aren’t overall very happy with the current balance. We’ll see how it all works out.
