Top Standard & Wild Legend Decks – Fractured in Alterac Valley Week 5 – January 2022

Last week has been rather uneventful. Devs are just coming back to the office after Holidays break, and right now we’re waiting for Patch 22.2. X.2 patches are always focused on Battlegrounds, and I expect the same thing this time – but they might also contain some smaller changes to Constructed. If I had to guess, on top of a big BG update, we’ll see a few Standard nerfs/buffs too.

When it comes to the meta – Thief Rogue is still the #1 deck to beat. Its popularity stays as high as ever in Diamond-Legend (between 15% and 25% depending on the rank), but its win rate has dropped a bit – mostly due to people learning how to play against them at this point. Last week, when it was still new, you could often catch enemy off-guard, doubly so if you managed to make them mulligan incorrectly thanks to Maestra of the Masquerade. But Thief Rogue is not the only viable Rogue build – Poison Aggro Rogue, in particular, is picking up, now with not two, but three ways to stall (2x Cloak of Shadows + Shadowcrafter Scabbs) – if you don’t put enough pressure on the deck early or don’t come equipped with the right tech (Rustrot Viper), you’re going to have some really bad time against it. The deck looks to be especially problematic in high Legend, but it also looks very promising in slightly less competitive Diamond, so I would assume that it can spill out to the rest of the ladder too. The last deck with a much higher Legend representation is Mozaki OTK Mage. While statistically it doesn’t look THAT good, many players dislike running into it, so I can see Blizzard doing something about it based on the “feel” and not necessarily power level.

Another story of this week has to be Druid. Both Beast Druid and Ramp Druid are getting increasingly popular – a lot of streamers are trying them out, often with quite a lot of success. Beast Druid looks much better on paper (in fact, I think that it’s one of the strongest decks in Standard right now), but Ramp Druid is actually slightly more popular. Most likely due to the fact that deck is just fun to play – it will probably stay in Tier 3 until some more balance changes / mini-set (assuming it will get more support), but I can see it staying around 3-4% play rate despite all of that. Wildheart Guff in particular is a very interesting card to play – having up to 20 mana to work with changes the way you play the matches completely, and that’s a cool experience.

Other than that, the meta hasn’t changed much. It will likely remain pretty stable until Patch 22.2 – assuming it will contain the Constructed balance changes I’ve mentioned. When will 22.2 drop? That’s a good question – my first guess would be next Tuesday (January 11), but devs have been awfully silent lately, so I think that there’s a small chance it will release a week later – on January 18. I would prefer the former, but either way, we won’t have to wait long.
