Top Standard Legend Decks From Descent of Dragons – Week 4 (January 2020)

Descent of Dragons is out for nearly a month now. We’ve already been through one nerf patch, and a second one was teased – we should learn more about it next week, but Iksar has already shared some details. Apparently, the decks they’re looking at are “some of the Galakrond decks”, Pirate Warrior and Deathrattle Rogue. It doesn’t mean that those will definitely get nerfed, or that others won’t, but it gives us a general direction they’re heading at. So far players are split when it comes to the patch – some love the fact that they get around to nerfing cards more quickly than usually, but others aren’t happy because they might have just crafted things thinking that their decks will be viable for longer, or feel that the current meta is balanced enough. I assume that we will get it some time between January 13 and 17, so there’s still some time to play around with the old decks. We’ll definitely let you know once we learn more about it!

As for the meta after the first patch, it was still not as solidified as I thought. While currently best decks will most likely remain high tier until the patch, we’ve started seeing some other successful builds popping out here and there. Remember that players didn’t have a lot of time to experiment, and lots of great decks in the history of Hearthstone were discovered only a month or two after the meta has settled. Given that the patch is coming soon-ish, I don’t expect any bigger shenanigans (because knowing that nerf patch drops in a few days discourages deck building, because what’s the point of taking a lot of time to discover a good deck if it might get bad very quickly).

In general, I’m not sure if I agree that Pirate Warrior needs a nerf, at least not if we go by the Legend meta. However, different Galakrond decks (Shaman, Warrior, Warlock) and Deathrattle Rogue are some of the most common builds people use to hit high Legend with, meaning that they might need some adjustments. I just hope that they won’t overdo it and won’t nerf them to the ground, because overall I think that the meta we’re in right now is pretty healthy and diverse. Just a few tweaks should do the trick.

Honestly I’m not loving the current meta so far – I like most of the new cards and mechanics, but it seems very hard at this point to win a game against an unfavourable match up, no matter how well you pilot your deck. In Saviors and League of Evil I felt I had at least some chance of beating a deck archetype that was favored to win against mine so long as I made good plays – not so much in Descent, unless my opponent has an absolutely terrible draw.
