Top Standard Legend Decks From Galakrond’s Awakening – Week 1 – January 2020

That’s right – Galakrond’s Awakening is finally out, and the first 11 cards have dropped. We’ll get 24 more over the next three weeks (starting with 8 on Tuesday) and a bunch of them look promising. The meta will, of course, be in shambles until all of the cards launch. That’s why I’ve decided to not update our Tier List or any other major guide like that – it’s pointless, because I would need to take a few days to analyze the meta and then once we update it (let’s say on Saturday) it becomes obsolete again in 3 days. So I will focus on adding new decks instead and update those after the latch part drops

When it comes to new cards, so far they haven’t made a MASSIVE impact on the meta, but it would be a lie to say that they didn’t matter. One of the most popular – and honestly promising – decks of the last few days were variations of Ramp Druid or Embiggen Druid. The former were more popular on Day 1-2, and then the latter took over. Looking at the stats, Embiggen Druid is more popular right now and also better – it’s actually a pretty decent deck. It was heavily boosted by Winged Guardian. While it’s does not combo with Embiggen in some spectacular way (although it having Elusive does help), it just fits perfectly into the deck. Having an 8 mana 8/10 Taunt that can’t be removed with spells and then spawns a 6/1 Taunt on Death is just nuts. Breath of Dreams also lets you get there sooner, and Strength in Numbers works pretty well in a deck full of big, buffed minions.

Other than Winged Guardian, Bomb Wrangler, Licensed Adventurer and Shadow Sculptor all see a little bit of play, but they aren’t making a big impact on the meta by boosting off-meta archetypes. Well, maybe Adventurer, which is solid in Quest Hunter, but solid does not mean “necessary”. We’ll see how things develop once more cards launch.

Below, you will find a full list of the Legend decks from last week, sorted by the highest placement.

Playing 24/7 against druids, it seems all other classes gave up.

Druids are the only class that got a neat new toy. Speaking for myself: I’ve been doing the minimum to clear dailies and spending the rest of my free time in the Runeterra beta.

That new toy is not the reason for success of Embiggen druid. Switch Winged Guardian for Evasive Drakonid and the results will not be much worse. Players are finally realizing what I have been saying for a while. Embiggen druid is a force to be reckoned with. It is not fun to play against all those Evasive big minions at all and it is not even the strongest version of the deck. In addition, it is very easy deck to pilot so netdeckers have an easy time with it. You always mulligan for 3 cards and play on curve.
The only real counter is Resurrect priest, with Galakrond warlock being second as a soft counter. On the side note (not official data), I don’t have much problems with highlander control warrior, but you have to be smart when using your resources. As for the techs, Dragonmaw poachers are great. They are however, frankly terrible in matchups where there are no dragons.

It is always the same old story. Once players stop experimenting and start netdecking, the meta losses it’s versatility, becomes stale and thus less fun to play in. In the end, we end up doing our daily quests and waiting for shake ups and/or new content.
