Top Standard & Wild Legend Decks – Showdown in the Badlands (Week 7) – December 2023

This part won’t be long as I’m leaving for a New Year celebration in an hour or so, but I still wanted to talk a bit about the current meta. I also didn’t manage to post too many decks over the last week, I only came back home from Christmas on Wednesday, and then I was ill for two more days. But I should be back in full force next week.

And the meta is twofold. On the one hand, we have a complete Treant Druid domination. It’s probably the best deck in the game right now, so people who want to climb ranks (below Legend) play it A LOT. It’s the most popular deck at all ranks below Legend. Particularly in high Diamond, where it boasts an impressive ~20% play rate. On the other hand, we have Excavate Rogue, which is around 50% of the Druid’s popularity below Legend, but it completely dominates in Legend in terms of play rate. It’s a good deck, but it’s not oppressive by any means – I guess that Legend players simply enjoy its play style. The only other popular deck is Plague Death Knight – it sees around 8% play rate overall and it’s spread pretty evenly across the ranks. It’s a Tier 2 deck that doesn’t really stand out, so – once again – people probably play it because they either like its play style or want to counter Reno decks.

Talking about the Reno decks, they have somehow disappeared from the meta. Sure, it’s not like they’re completely dead, but if you add them up together they are maybe 10% of the meta overall. That number was closer to 30-40% a few weeks ago. And it’s not like they were heavily nerfed. Sure, Reno Druid and Reno Shaman both got some nerfs, but they are still perfectly viable. I’m not entirely sure why is that, maybe the novelty factor of them disappeared and people got bored of them?

The meta overall is in a very interesting spot. Besides the 3 most popular decks, which make up ~1/3 of the decks seen on the ladder, the meta is extremely diverse. We have about a dozen of decks in the 3-5% popularity range and then another dozen of also viable but even less popular builds. It’s been a while since we had such a variety of playable decks. Unless you really hate Treant Druid, Excavate Rogue (or maybe Plague DK), you probably won’t mind playing the game right now as you won’t be facing the same decks over and over again. I haven’t been playing a lot lately (I was visiting family for Christmas) but still, it was quite enjoyable so far. I really don’t like playing against Excavate Rogues, but luckily I only face them every 4-5 games or so so it hasn’t been so bad.

Anyway, as I’ve said, I’ll try to post more decks next week. And hopefully, the devs will also be back with some interesting news. We should be hearing about the mini-set very soon. Happy New Year, everyone!

Am I missing something with the wild Reno Holy Wrath Paladin deck? Doesn’t seem to be anything close to normal Reno decks, nothing to shuffle Shirvalla back in to guarantee the damage, and sir Finley would throw away your holy wrath card. What is the combo here?

You use Hi-Ho Silverwing to get the single copy of Holy Wrath, Order in the Court to make Shirvallah on top. Finley will swap out Shirvallah into the bottom of your deck if you need him to. But I’ll agree, it seems like a Reno deck for the sake of being a Reno deck and the Holy Wrath combo is mostly an afterthought.
