Frozen Throne Launch Changes

The pack changes ended up going up early in a recent patch! The Dreadsteed nerf has not yet happened.

No More Duplicate Legendaries in Packs

Every time you open a Legendary in a pack it will be one you do not already own (unless you own all of the Legendaries in that set). If you own a regular copy of a Legendary, you will not receive a golden copy in a pack.

No More 3 or More of the Same Card in a Pack

There were times when you might receive three or more copies of the same card in a pack. You can now only receive two copies of a single card in a pack.

Receive a Guaranteed Legendary in the First 10 Packs of a Set

If you have NEVER opened a pack from a particular set you will be guaranteed to receive a Legendary within the first 10 Packs. So once Knights of the Frozen Throne launches, if you had never opened a pack from Journey to Un’Goro, you will be guaranteed a Legendary in the first 10 packs you open.

Official Post about the Pack Changes

Dreadsteed is Receiving a Change/Nerf

A card coming to Frozen Throne called Defile is forcing a nerf to the beloved Dreadsteed. Defile and Dreadsteed would cause an infinite loop so Blizzard is changing Dreadsteed to read: “Deathrattle: At the end of your turn summon a Dreadsteed.”

There will be 135 new cards in the Frozen Throne expansion. Below you will find cards sorted by class and a visual look at what is still left to reveal. Keep in mind that the Neutral section only contains a fraction of the incoming cards to keep scrolling to a minimum.

Frozen Throne Missions

The Missions for the new expansion were announced in a live Q&A from Blizzard. From what we know they are Adventure Mode type single-player content that is free for all players. They will provide some backstory and flavor to the new expansion. I would expect maybe a few packs would be rewarded upon completion based on what Ben Brode said about the single-player content not too long ago:

“First, I’ll say that we’re not getting rid of Adventures – we’re gonna keep all the single-player missions, [and we’re] ramping up a team to do more and more of that starting next expansion. I think the storytelling and the challenge of single-player content in Hearthstone is pretty great. We’re gonna make them free so that players who are interested in the new set can just get in and start playing. We’re gonna give out packs of cards for playing that single-player content. So I think that’s cool.”

The Lich King is going to be a difficult fight that is different for each of the 9 classes. If you are able to defeat The Lich King with all 9 classes you will receive the new Paladin Hero Skin: Young Prince Arthas!

The Story of the Lich King

Here’s a good recap of all the lore behind the Lich King.

Wrath of the Lich King Trailer

Wrath of the Lich King was the second World of Warcraft expansion. Heroes traversed the frozen wastes of Northrend to defeat the Lich King.

Fall of the Lich King

When heroes in World of Warcraft took down the Lich King, one had to take his place. Someone you might have heard of actually: Bolvar Fordragon.

Expansion Leaks

It originally looked like we were going to get a leak free reveal from Blizzard! Just about every expansion has had leaks, ranging from a huge billboard being created pre-expansion reveal for Whispers of the Old Gods, to a voice actress having Journey to Un’Goro on their resume. This time images of the new expansion were found on the official Chinese Hearthstone website that has all but confirmed that the next expansion will be inspired by the Wrath of the Lich King expansion in World of Warcraft.

MMORPG.COM Leak

Looks like MMORPG.com accidentally let loose with a scheduled post a little early.

Hearthstone players will be able to chill out with the Knights of the Frozen Throne expansion coming in August. The new addition will bring 135 new cards to the game and will take place in Northrend with the Lich King himself as the final boss. New cards will include “terrifying bear sharks, ridiculous geists, indigenous Tuskarr ice fisherman and the addition of runic magic”.

Legendary Hero Cards will allow players to give any of the nine heroes the essence of undeath and to turn them into Death Knights. As expected, Death Knights have altered and modified abilities.

Players can take part in some of Knights of the Frozen Throne for free. The prologue, two wings with three bosses and a battle against the Lich King will all be available. Finishing the prologue will have players earn a random legendary Hero card. Each wing completed will also see players earn a card pack.

Preorders for the expansion will run $49.99 and comes complet with a bundle of 50 card packs and a special card back.

Knights of the Frozen Throne will be released in August. You can learn more on the Hearthstone site.

    Hey Evident,

Great job throughout this whole reveal and congrats on the card reveal!

Can I make a suggestion for future set reveals? As it seems many people complain about the rating of cards on this site, perhaps you could assign three options for ranking… one for constructed, one for wild and one for arena (the 3 main formats)… as some cards are great in some formats but relatively useless in others.

This approach might give some greater accuracy as to how things are ranked and therefore discussed.

    Food for thought?!?

    Cheers

Does anyone know what’s going to happen if you use alternative heroes and then you play the Frozen Throne Hero cards? I wished that there would be hero cards for the alternative heroes as well…

Funny since no one uses it.

Sure mate, and I’m really excited about that!! Priest is my fav class and I hope that – after a couple of years – I can finally play a viable shadowform deck. That would be awesome!! Let’s cross our fingers XD

Interesting. The Death Knight in WoW was an actual class unto itself. I’m assuming from the art and what’s been said that each hero death knight will be different, likely retaining their class. Very interested to see how this pans out. Loved the Lich King expansion in WoW.

  20. Chimborazo
    July 7, 2017 at 4:32 am

Seems like a pretty big assumption that there will once again be two legendaries per cards. Just re-watched the announcement, they don’t say that it’s the case. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

    • AgentMango
      July 7, 2017 at 5:16 am

They said that there will only be one class legendary this time. I’m prettty sure Blizard is not stupid enough to make the same mistake they did last exapansion.

      • Carestless
        July 7, 2017 at 5:28 am

Never underestimate how stupid Blizzard can be….

But honestly, I agree, I doubt they would do that again.

      • Deza
        July 7, 2017 at 6:09 am

Why you call it a mistake?

      • Chimborazo
        July 7, 2017 at 6:57 am

I don’t think it was a mistake. I loved getting to play with twice as many legendaries and it’s one of the reasons this expansion has been so good – every class that couldn’t make a strong wuest deck had a solid legendary minion to fall back on.
The biggest success story of this model was Paladin.

Diversity is a great thing, definitely not a mistale. Honestly, I hope there are additional legendaries to the death knight cards.

        • AgentMango
          July 7, 2017 at 9:02 am

I have to agree with the expansion being fun because of the extra legendaries but I got lucky with the amount of legendaries that I got. I have almost all of the meta decks, with a minimal amount of money spent. The only problem is for F2P players that aren’t able to have fun with the legendaries because they didn’t get any or a small amount of them.

          • Chimborazo
            July 7, 2017 at 9:29 am

I definitely understand the struggle of free to play players, but I don’t thin that Blizzard should not release the best product they can because there are people who choose not to buy into their game.

F2P players should have reasonable expectations – they can save up and craft a deck or two or go with what they open randomly. Better wait some time for the meta to at least initially settle than to expect you can have every card without any investment, whether that’s an insane grind or money, it doesn’t matter. I think fun can be had in this game without experimenting with every single legendary at everyone, not just f2p folk, should have realistic expectations about how much they are willing to put into their collection, into being competitive, into purely having fun, or something in between.

        • AgentMango
          July 7, 2017 at 10:18 am

I have to agree with the linitations on free to play. There definitely should be an advantage with buying things in game because if there wasn’t, what would be the point of paying money when you can do it for free?
I’m just advocating for F2P players as I was one just until this last expansion because I wasn’t able to keep up with all of the legendaries. It is nice though when you can get several good decks with no money…

        • Rocles
          July 24, 2017 at 11:45 pm

Well except for Druid. They don’t have a good legendary anything in un’goro, oh and warlock, hunter, shaman.

  21. Carestless
    July 7, 2017 at 3:34 am

Man, I am hyped for this! Back in the days of WoW after quitting for a long time, the Wrath of the Lich King brought me back because I absolutely love the whole setting and theme of Death Knights.
And now it seems we will have a Hearthstone Expansion with this kind of setting!
I am very excited what sort of art work this brings, new cards, but most of all…. what will happen with the Meta?

I’ll be sure to follow the news here, Evident always does a very goed job to update this site with any news Hearthstone related.
    Keep up the good work.

Do the legendary hero cards mean we’re in store for two classes legendaries again?

Also, waddup with Brode saying Hero cards are the 4th type after Spells, Minions, and Weapons? They want us forgetting about Quests already???

    • erickiller
      July 6, 2017 at 8:21 pm

Yes and no. They did say quest is a new type of card, but in fact is only a new mechanic for a spell. It can be cancelled and copied just like a spell. Looks like the hero card will not work like a spell.

    • potocki
      August 1, 2017 at 12:08 pm

quests are technically spells just legendaries
