Top Standard & Wild Legend Decks – Whizbang’s Workshop (Week 4) – April 2024

Demon Hunter is getting nerfed with Patch 29.2 on Tuesday. That’s probably the biggest news today. The patch is focused on Battlegrounds, but Blizzard has decided to throw in an emergency Demon Hunter nerf. Umpire's Grasp is going up from 3 to 4 mana, essentially delaying the Window Shopper turn by 1. While I don’t think that the nerf will completely flip the meta on its head, it’s certainly a big hit for Demon Hunter.

The discourse about it on social media was really funny though. I’ve read so many people say that the nerf is too small and doesn’t matter and then so many people say that it just kills Demon Hunter. I know that nuance is difficult on social media, but people arguing about it was pretty hilarious. I’m sitting somewhere in the middle. The nerf is definitely going to matter, but it’s not killing the whole deck. It should just put it in line with other decks. Its play rate will certainly drop (people always stop playing nerfed decks) and it might prompt other people to drop anti-DH tech cards like Glacial Shards, but we’ll see.

Either way, what I’m more interested in is the next balance update. It will probably drop ~2 weeks after 29.2 (so late April) and it will be an actual, proper Constructed patch. So we should not only see more nerfs, but probably also some buffs for the underperforming decks. I suspect that’s the one shaking up the meta more. I could see Druid and Rogue getting buffed. I suspect that Spell Mage will also get some buffs since it’s the main Mage archetype in this expansion but it completely flopped. I thought that Paladin might also needs some light buffs, because the first patch definitely overnerfed it, but I think that if the other top classes get nerfed then Paladins might be fine (because right now they’re just a little bit too weak).

Masters Tour Spring Championship 2024 is currently underway, with semi-finals being played at the time I’m writing this. Old Guardian will have a tournament analysis article tomorrow, so if you’re interested but couldn’t watch it (or did watch it but didn’t keep track of the stats etc.), you might find it interesting.
