This is the first Legend decks roundup of The Lost City of Un’Goro. As usual, I didn’t do one on Week 2 because we had a balance update just a few days prior. Instead, Old Guardian covered the newly rising meta in this article, which is still mostly relevant (although we have seen some shifts since then).
As much as I’d like to say that the patch has fixed everything, that’s simply not the case. We’re still far from a perfect meta, and most of the top decks are simply ones from previous expansions with a few new cards slotted in. Heck, even the most popular (and arguably most toxic) deck right now – Agamaggan Warlock – is running only a single new card. Granted, the deck doesn’t exist without Cursed Catacombs, but calling it a brand new deck is a bit of a stretch. Cycle Rogue? Same old deck, just with Platysaur and Cultist Map. Dummy Warrior? Same old deck, just with Endbringer Umbra and Elise the Navigator. Protoss Priest? Same old deck, just with Gravedawn Sunbloom and Resuscitate. I can keep going, but you get the gist.
When it comes to truly new decks, I’d say that Quest decks were supposed to be the “fresh blood”, but they have mostly failed. The only really successful one was Murloc Paladin – perhaps even too successful. While it’s not a very strong deck in Diamond-Legend, it absolutely crushes Silver-Platinum rank range. Even after a nerf and some meta shifts, it remains the most popular deck in that range and it’s undisputable Tier 1. Funnily enough, the nerf patch actually made it stronger at higher ranks, because it nerfed its counters more than it nerfed Quest Paladin itself.
However, if we look at other Quest decks, they are… pretty much non-existent. Quest Warrior and Quest Warlock are playable, in a Tier 3 kind of way, but that’s basically it. Other Quest decks sit in Tier 4 or even lower. Quest Rogue was probably one of the worst decks in history at launch, clocking insane 20% win rate. Even aftert the buffs, it’s sitting at around 30%. To be completely fair – some of them like Quest Mage or Quest Shaman are actually way closer to being playable, with roughly 40% win rate. That’s the point where a couple of good buffs can actually make them viable.
The Lost City of Un’Goro has been one of the worst expansion launches I remember, and we need some real countermeasures and we need them quickly. We’re already ~3 weeks after launch and even the most hardcore players are tired of the game. If devs don’t react fast, I’m afraid that many players might quit, because how much can you play against the same decks that are very unfun to face. I hope that we’ll see some balance changes in 33.2 (Battlegrounds update launching on August 5). It’s rare to see Standard changes in BG patch, but this time I think they are necessary.
The final question remains – if Quests become viable, will the game be actually more fun to play? In other words, are Quest decks fun to play and play against? I guess we’ll have to find out. If not, let’s just hope that the final expansion of the year will be better.
