So we did get another balance patch after all, but it’s an incredibly small one. Only two cards got nerfed – Amirdrassil and Reserved Spot. Both were important cards in their respective decks (well, Amirdrassil was important in pretty much all Druid decks to be fair). And so, win/play rates of both Owlonius Druid and Handbuff Hunter have dropped. But they were never really that popular on a wider ladder. They had less than 10% play rate together in Legend, much less at lower ranks. And while Handbuff Hunter got significantly slower and weaker, Owlonius Druid seems to still be viable. So ultimately the patch didn’t really change the meta a lot.
What caused even more controversy than the patch itself is dev comment. I’ll put a direct quote of the relevant part below (if you want to read the whole thing, check out 33.2.2 patch notes):
We’ve been following community discussions around the power level of Quests and appreciate everyone who’s taken the time to share their thoughts. Our goal this expansion was to bring Quests closer to the level they reached in their first two appearances, rather than the overperformance seen with Questlines in United in Stormwind. For that reason, we’re not making further Quest buffs in this patch, but we’ll continue monitoring their power level following the mini-set.
I’m honestly not sure what devs thought when they designed the new Quests. I of course get it that they didn’t want to make them overpowered, but the first two rounds of Quests that they’re alluding to were mostly… underpowered. They were still fun to play because they were fresh, and the meta was A LOT less data-driven back then. You can’t really do the same thing today.
I just fundamentally disagree with this kind of design philosophy. It sounds like they made Quests underbaked on purpose. As if they were afraid . Yes, I’m also afraid of power creep – but there’s a big gap of aiming for 50% win rate on Quests and what we got at launch (most of them were in the ~30% win rate territory). Heck, it’s better to overshoot a bit at launch than undershoot by that much. If some Quests landed at 55% win rate, it would be easy to tone them down by nerfing 1-2 cards. But at 30% play rate, it’s just incredibly hard to get it right with buffs.
And if you’re afraid of players reaction to the Quests… why bring them back at all? If you want to reference the OG Un’Goro, they could be a side-mechanic (like… you know… Sidequests!) and you could just focus on something else entirely. Or if you really think that a new version of Un’Goro needs to have Quests, you could just pick a different theme altogether if you don’t want to make Quests good.
Sorry about this rant, but I just can’t get over how bad The Lost City of Un’Goro was, especially at launch. It’s gotten a bit better now, but it’s still far from perfect. The only thing that can save it is the mini-set. IF there’s a lot of Quest support in the mini-set, I can see why they don’t want to buff them further (it could lead to another Big Spell Mage situation, where the deck was too weak and got buffed just to release Portalmancer Skyla right after).
But that leads to another question – if they designed Quests to be weak at launch and only become viable TWO MONTHS later, that’s another incredibly bad design decision. As a reminder, they are the main focus of the whole expansion, so by making them too weak at first you’re dooming the entire set. So honestly, no matter
And that’s really sad because I love the Un’Goro theme. Like for many players, OG Un’Goro was one of my favorite expansions and I think that Lost City did it justice thematically. But in terms of design and balance… that’s a different story.
Anyway, I complained so much about the expansion that I don’t even know what to follow it up with. As I’ve said, the current meta didn’t really chage much after the patch. In fact, it’s getting really hard to find any new decks at this point. Usually I try to not post the same archetype more than once every few days, but I’ve been adding a lot of repeats lately just because I can’t find new/unique stuff. It’s not a problem exclusive to this expansion, but it just shows that even pro players are kinda done with the set. Again, the mini-set should be announced soon, so I hope it makes a difference.

The most charitable suggestion that could be made is that maybe the Lost City could have been the first expansion of the year over Emerald Dream. Un’Goro was the first set of its rotation after all, and it would at least go some distance in explaining away why the Quests feel so horrifically underbaked. But then again, we’d still be coming after the high of Starcraft and who knows how much dismantling of old cards would need to happen then.
Weirdly enough, so much of the current metagame feels like they’re running how 2024 archetypes were supposed to work. Testing Dummy Warrior, Incindius Rogue and Shaman, decks and ideas that should have worked in 2024 but just didn’t for one reason or another. (Off the top of my head, I’m not going to name all the insane stuff we got in 2023, but Titans and Reno Lone Ranger were one hell of a trip…) It’s as if 2025 was an attempt to make up for the underwhelming 10th anniversary that was 2024, and even then, it still hasn’t panned out. Which seems to add up when we look at how 2024 was when the team quietly stopped creating new gameboards and brought them back for Un’Goro, saddled with monetisation tie-ins.
(Also… does anyone else feel confused about the King Krush pet? I’ve played against opponents who have it a little more frequently over the past few weeks, and it genuinely looks negligible to me being on the other side of the board. I get to click it, it reacts, and that’s it? If it played a part in a defeat animation like the Ragnaros hero then I’d see the appeal. Right now all it tells me is my opponent bought or botted it for a hundred and sixty bucks…)
The sneering condescension is too much. How dare we want our legendary cards to at least be playable.
Pulled Krog yesterday. Unplayable dino-trash so God awful it makes me sad. Saw they added a $35 signature to the store shortly after. Somehow annoyed me more than the gacha-saurus pet.
The cynical me monetization of the game combined with the utter mismanagement of the meta has just left something i used to enjoy feeling sad and hollow.
I’m glad to see you are frustrated with the current state of HS as well. I feel like I’ve been screaming into a void for the past year lol
There is no good way out of the current meta situation for blizzard and, as a player who’s been in this since alpha, it really sucks to see this happen.
The whole StarCraft mini set high (then low after the nerfs), now this.
