The balance patch is here! Aaand… it’s not exactly what people have expected. The patch was relatively small, buffing a bunch of mini-set cards and that’s it. No nerfs, no buffs to base expansion cards. So as you can imagine, it didn’t end up having a major impact, at least not so far.
However, I’ll give them credit where credit is due – adding Taunt to Khelos has made a massive difference. Egg Warlock was a Tier 4 deck before the patch and this single change alone has bumped it into playable territory. Before the change, many decks could just ignore the 20/20 minion, take one hit to the face, and just rush the Warlock down. Right now it’s impossible and you have to go through a massive wall.
At the same time, I don’t think it will ever become a meta tyrant, because it’s incredibly easy to counter. All you need is a single Transform or Silence effect and it’s cooked (or should I say hard boiled). Heck, even Deathrattle Demon Hunter deck built around reviving Blob of Tar does a great job at countering it (which is also why it’s becoming more popular too). However, the fact that none of the top meta decks really run that stuff allowed it to thrive – at least for now. As I’ve said, if it gets too popular, it’s safe to assume that decks will just tech against it, but at the current play rate it’s still not worth it.
Thanks to Egg seeing play, Holy Eggbearer is now also playable as a consistent way to tutor it. Other than that, however, none of the newly buffed cards seem to have made a dent in the meta. Of course, it’s only been a few days and things might still change. But it really goes to show how underbaked both the main expansion and the mini-set were. Even after all the buffs, some VERY drastic (such as shaving off two mana cost off of Ankylodon), most of the new cards are still unplayable.
I really don’t know what Team 5 is planning at this point. In patch notes, they basically implied that they are aware that players are unhappy, but plan to fix the meta in the next expansion instead of overhauling it through balance patches. They also once again mentioned that meta where Quests are too competitive isn’t fun or healthy. So that begs the question we already asked multiple times since the start of this expansion – why release an expansion built around Quests? If they are too weak, then they see no play and it’s like the expansion didn’t exist. And apparently, if they are good, the meta won’t be fun. I know that I repeat myself, but it just doesn’t make any sense.
And what now? The next expansion is still ~1.5 months away. Do they just plan to leave the meta as it is and not do anything? I honestly don’t think that would be a great idea. I think they really do have to shake it up somehow. Maybe if not through balance patches, they’re gonna bring back some old cards to Standard. After all, the next expansion is themed around time travel, so that would be fitting. If done right, I guess that it could be interesting. And I’d say that anything is better than just leaving it be and pretending that this expansion doesn’t exist.
