Top Standard & Wild Legend Decks – The Lost City of Un’Goro (Week 9) – September 2025

The mini-set dropped on Tuesday, and… sadly, as many of you have expected, it didn’t really made a big difference. Old Guardian covered the early post-mini-set meta in this article if you’re interested. He tried really hard to find decks running new cards. It’s safe to assume that things might still change and people find some better use for a few cards, but it’s also safe to assume that it won’t affect the meta drastically.

Funnily enough, The Egg of Khelos is the card that has lead to most experimentation. Just to be clear – I’m not saying that it’s GOOD, but at least players have tried to make it work. Right now it’s in about 5% of decks on the ladder. The idea is to play the Egg, pop it as quickly as you can to get 20/20, and then possibly Endbringer Umbra to spawn even more of them. The Egg is most viable in Death Knight (thanks to Corpse Explosion), but I’ve seen some experimentation in Warlock and even Paladin. However, most of those decks focused solely on the Egg have between 30 and 40% win rate. The only “viable” way to play it is to just use it in Leech Death Knight, but… builds that don’t run it have a few % higher win rate anyway. Still, it shows that people WANT to play new cards and experiment, even if those decks turn out to be real bad it’s at least interesting to pull something new off instead of doing the same thing over and over again.

There are a few other mini-set cards played, but they are mostly just a sidegrades in already existing decks. Some turned out to be slightly better than already played cards, some slightly worse, but overall it’s a wash. The only card that clearly improved an already existing deck is Firegill in Quest Paladin. Which is not happy news for many people as they were already sick of facing it.

Now, the situation is a bit diferent in Wild. Bat Mask is popular thanks to its combo with Elwynn Boar – you can play Boar, Mask it, and clear the board with Plague of Flames to pull off an easy Sword of a Thousand Truths. In order to make the combo possible, you play Mask through Bloodbloom, which you often first discounted to 1 mana with Shadowborn. It’s not the BEST Wild deck ever, but it looks to be a viable one. It’s quite rare for a mini-set to spin a new, good Wild archetype, so that’s something I guess.

I wouldn’t call the current Standard meta the worst ever, but sadly it’s pretty stale. Most of the decks are face is the stuff I have played against for not just weeks, but months at this point. The biggest exception is Quest Warlock, which became quite popular after the buffs and then the meta shifts + optimization. Right now it’s one of the best and most popular decks in the game. And I’m really happy for it, I wish some other Quest decks were as viable. Oh, and of course, Murloc Paladin is still very popular at lower ranks, but I think we can classify it under “stale” if you kept facing it in 1/4 of your matches for the last 2 months (even though it’s technically a “new” deck).

We really need a patch, and I expect to see it soon (the usual timeline would be September 16 or 18). It’s weird how few balance changes we had this expansion given how underwhelming it was. We only had a single bigger round of nerfs and buffs, even though it’s been 2 months since the set’s release. I think the only way to save it is a massive round of buffs for Un’Goro cards. Heck, maybe they won’t all land, maybe some of them will produce OP decks instead. But at least the meta will be fresh, and then we can deal with outliers in a patch after that. I’m not against trying to fight against the power creep, but releasing unplayable expansions without any other action is the worst way to do it.
