Spellbook Duel – Tavern Brawl

This week’s Tavern Brawl is Spellbook Duel! Choose a class and then add ten cards (only one copy of each card) from all of the sets to construct your deck. When you draw a card at the beginning of your turn you will be presented with 3 different cards from your deck (Discover). If you draw a card any other time, you are given a spell called Peruse, which costs 1-mana and allows you to discover a card from your deck.

The information in this post is currently of the previous version of this brawl, I’ll be updating for any changes!

Official Description for Tavern Brawl Spellbook Duel

Choose your spellbook carefully, champion! Pick 10 cards, and anytime you would draw a card, you instead Discover a copy of a card from your deck.

Spellbook Duel Tips

  • Milling your opponent does not work. Your opponent will draw Peruse cards instead of cards from their deck.
  • Patches the Pirate will actually come out of your deck and leave you with 9 cards. So he really thins your deck now! You can use Gang Up to add him back in for more Patches action.
  • You can add cards to each others decks. So, a card like Excavated Evil will be added to their deck and show up in their discovers. If you manage to add two of these cards you can shut off cards that require no duplicates to trigger (e.g. Reno Jackson and Kazakus).

Spellbook Duel Deck Lists

Tell us which are the best 10 cards you used for this Tavern Brawl in the comments below and it could be featured in this post!

Martian’s Quest Discard Warlock

Lakkari Sacrifice, Malchezaar's Imp, Soulfire, Clutchmother Zavas, Darkshire Librarian, Silverware Golem, Fist of Jaraxxus, Lakkari Felhound, Blood-Queen Lana'thel, Doomguard

Evident’s Basic Mage

This is not a great deck, but it can get you a win if you play to your outs and generally always go face. If you have Mana Wyrm or Sorcerer's Apprentice you can swap out Chillwind Yeti who is mostly just a filler card. You are generally always looking for Frostbolt and Fireball, especially later in the game. Use Mirror Image to stall and to protect your charge minions. Frost Nova can buy you enough time to draw an out. Always be counting for lethal, and if your opponent heals or runs Reno Jackson then you should just forfeit because you can only really beat decks that can’t heal.

Arcane Missiles, Mirror Image, Bluegill Warrior, Frostbolt, Arcane Intellect, Frost Nova, Wolfrider, Chillwind Yeti, Fireball, Nightblade

1stDestroyer’s Reno Mage

(1) Frostbolt – Serves as either early removal or to stall a big minion.
(2) Sorcerer's Apprentice – Combo with Gadgetzan Auctioneerto infinitely fill your hand back up.
(3) Arcane Intellect – Great for getting those “Peruse” discover cards.
(4) Deathlord – Slowly thin out all the minions in your opponents deck.
(5) Ice Block – Your hero is permanently immune.
(6) Kezan Mystic – Counter any mage with Ice Block.
(7) Loatheb – Frustrates your opponents who are playing mostly spells.
(8) Gadgetzan Auctioneer – The ultimate card draw mechanic.
(9) Reno Jackson – Just an extra card so that you don’t have to play Ice Block every turn in some situations.
(10) Arcane Giant – 0 mana 8/8 minions for huge board presence.

Evident’s Dragon Priest

Power Word: Shield, Twilight Whelp, Wyrmrest Agent, Kabal Talonpriest, Shadow Word: Death, Velen's Chosen, Twilight Guardian, Azure Drake, Drakonid Operative, Excavated Evil

Evident’s Jade Druid

I’m undecided on the Mulch spot. Aya Blackpaw is an option but it’s a bit costly and doesn’t have taunt, which is why I like Jade Behemoth better. I’d also consider Defender of Argus instead of Mulch. Feral Rage will keep you from getting burned out and also acts as removal.

Innervate, Jade Idol, Wild Growth, Brann Bronzebeard, Feral Rage, Mulch, Jade Spirit, Swipe, Nourish, Jade Behemoth

100 % win rate from my first 6 tavern brawls with
Babbling Book, Open the Waygate, Frostbolt, Primordial Glyph, Sorcerer’s apprentice, arcane intellect, Ice block, Molten relection, archmage antonidas, alexstrasza.
Win turn 7 most games. Just Ice block to complete quest and survive pretty simple.

Yeah I play quest mage as well and she is just too op. Have slight variations as follow:
Bubbling Book -> Cabalist’s Tome (better value and benefits from apprentice, more spells for crazy continuous time wrap)
Frostbolt -> Frost nova (why freeze a single target when you can freeze the board? Plus this deck does not need that 3 damage)
Alexstraza -> Doomsayer (Not sure if Alexstraza will ever need to be played… doomsayer has good synergy with frost nova and it is a great 2nd turn card to play when hand is not too good)

This deck literally focus on getting apprentice and arcane intellect. Once you have both card it is worth using them immediately at turn 4 and fill hand with more card draws or apprentice… quest is too easy that had one game skipping opponent’s turn 3 times in a row and stabbed him/her to death with apprentice. Very fun deck but a bit too op xd

Hi guys, I want to share my list for this brawl. I’m sorry for the italian name, I wrote the card english name or their effect when don’t know the translation

    ### Mazzo Rissa
    # Classe: Stregone
    # Formato: Selvaggio
    #
    # 1x (2) Bomba Oscura (3 damage)
    # 1x (2) Gnomferatu (KFT warlock epic)
    # 1x (2) Profanazione (Defile)
    # 1x (3) Signore della Morte (DeathLord)
    # 1x (4) Kazakus
    # 1x (5) Loatheb
    # 1x (5) Nathrezim Spregevole (KFT rare, 1 damage end of turn to all enemy minions)
    # 1x (6) Reno Jackson
    # 1x (6) Risucchio d’Anima (destroy minion and heal 3 life)
    # 1x (6) Trafficante della Kabala (add a demon to your hand at the end of turn)
    #

    #
    # Per utilizzare questo mazzo, copialo negli appunti e crea un nuovo mazzo in Hearthstone

The strategy is based on removing card from the opponent’s deck while controlling the board, slowing down the pace for combo deck with Loatheb, the aggro with DeathLord, and if you’re going down a Reno Jakson can save you.

Only lost one game (reanimator priest).

    Enjoy!

    Tavern Brawl Brokenness

    1 circle of healing
    1 spirit lash
    1 north shire cleric
    1 radiant elemental

    1 mind blast

    1 shadow visions
    1 power word shield

    1 silence
    1 resurrection
    1 holy smite

So… on turn 5, you play northshire + 2x radiant elemental…then play spirit lash + circle of healing to draw at least 3 cards (I am averaging 6). You go to full health. At this point, you play all of the discover spells for free. When you discover, try to get 1 northshire, 2 radiant elemental, 1 spirit lash, and 1 circle of healing…the other cards search for mind blast unless you are forced to silence something.

Every turn you do it again at least once netting mind blasts in hand. They can’t kill you unless they can deal 30 in a turn. When you get 6 mind blasts…shoot them for 30 and say well played.

Holy smite and resurrection are in the deck so you can restart the combo either by damaging and hero power healing something or getting back a dude.

You will probably rope yourself every turn until you kill them.

PS- this is much less disruptable than the inner fire versions of this deck which require 2 dead cards-inner fire and the health buff. The opponent can’t interact most of the time.

tldr is first like 3-4 turns try to buff up a bluegill & murloc knight, from turn 6 its pretty much murloc knights and hero power. Works pretty well when it works, kinda gets screwed by warlock but this is more of a fun attempt

Funny little Warlock deck that often wins by turn 6:

    Malchezaar’s Imp (the key)
    Flame Imp (fast early critter)
    Corruption (remove bigs)
    Power Overwhelming (finisher)
    Soulfire (another key)
    Succubus (strong with discard)
    Doomguard (finisher, if needed)
    Silverware Golem (bonus critters)
    {The last couple slots depend on your tastes; maybe Sacrificial Pact for heal off a Demon after Power Overwhelming}

The key is Malchezaar’s Imp – you drop your hand fast, play for discards (Soulfire or Succubus) into Silverware Golem.
Often by turn 2 / 3 / 4 your board will be some combination of Malchezaar’s Imp / Flame Imp / Succubus / Silverware Golem for a lot of face or board control.
Toward the end (turns 5 / 6) you will probably play into a series of Soulfire / Peruse for a lot of burn with Power Overwhelming topping it off.

I don’t have the Warlock discard quest, but it might work in this deck.
Gnomeferatu might work as disruption and making people misplay by thinking you’re milling when you’re really face.

Basically Quest Mage but you can always win on turn 6 with a single Apprentice on board and an Intellect in hand to make it to the next turn. Extremely solid against every deck but Gnomeferatu Warlock.

Modified version of MOREPRIME’S INNER FIRE PRIEST

Same deck list as above (Circle of Healing, Inner Fire, Northshire Cleric, Power Word: Shield, Divine Spirit, Lightwell, Shadow Word: Pain, Kabal Talonpriest, Holy Champion, Holy Nova) but with 3 cards swapped:

    Kabal Talonpriest > Radiant Elemental
    Holy Champion > Mass Dispel
    Holy Nova > Faceless Shambler

Currently 6/0 (100% win rate) with this deck and it’s very powerful thanks primarily to the Radiant Elemental. It allows you to cast Power Word: Shield to give a minion 2 health, draw a Discover card and cast that over and over again. Mass Dispel works handily to remove threats on the opposing board while adding further draw, and the Shambler works to stave off aggro decks by duplicating your biggest minion while also being a taunt minion.

    Final Decklist:
    – Circle of Healing
    – Inner Fire
    – Northshire Cleric
    – Power Word: Shield
    – Divine Spirit
    – Lightwell
    – Shadow Word: Pain
    – Radiant Elemental
    – Mass Dispel
    – Faceless Shambler

Hey Evident! Wanted to mention that playing Naga & Giants combo is preeeeetty good in this week’s TB seeing as you can Mulligan hard for early game removal cards amd then just discover Naga and some giants until turn 5 when you dump them out on board and just win. Was consistent enough for me and there aren’t many answers floating around because nobody sees it coming!

    Deck I’ve been using:

    ### Naga & Friends TB
    # Class: Hunter
    # Format: Wild
    #
    # 1x (2) Explosive Trap
    # 1x (2) Freezing Trap
    # 1x (2) Mad Scientist
    # 1x (2) Quick Shot
    # 1x (3) Eaglehorn Bow
    # 1x (5) Naga Sea Witch
    # 1x (10) Sea Giant
    # 1x (12) Clockwork Giant
    # 1x (12) Mountain Giant
    # 1x (25) Molten Giant

    AAEBAYoWCtMBhwTJBOEH3Ar+DPcNuRHUEd4WAAA=

A quick word on mulligan & card choices:
    • I try to Mulligan for early game removal but most importantly Mad Scientist and Bow! Having a secret in your starting hand isn’t terrible as you won’t discover it any longer after MS activates its deathrattle.
    • Mad Scientist is great because it thins out your deck pulling the traps out therefore more reliably allowing you to discover Naga or Giants between turns 2 & 5.
    • I put together 4 giants that allow flexibility in that when you have a choice of more than one you can choose the ones that you think will be easiest to play. Molten and Sea are usually the easiest to throw down, the other are slightly less flexible.

Thanks for your consideration, happy brawling 🙂

I have a couple of fun decks. But in my opinion, this one takes the cake. 6 wins and 2 loss with the deck. Takes a bit of prediction and yolo plays for it to work.

    1) voidwalker (cheap 1 mana taunt needed for aggressive decks)
    2) corrupting mist (replacable for defile if you dont like to wait. I use it to clear those big minions)
    3) gromaferatu (the mvp or the deck)
    4) deathlord (miller)
    5) kabal courier (replacable as well..i added for the bonus of getting priest or mage cards)
    6) hellfire (board clear needed)
    7) reno (massive heal)
    8) malyganis (immunity, the next 2 card syngergise well)
    9) krul (summon all the malyganis on hand)
    10) dk guldan (for obvious reasons)

Krul replaced for voidwalker to combat early game and a possibility of deathlord dropping him out to scare

    Gnomeferatu Warlock (Best Version)
100% winrate against any other deck except maybe itself!

Bloodbloom: Combo with Doom spell for just 2 mana
Dark Bomb: Early game removal (needed something for those nasty sorcerers apprentice).
Defile: Cheap board clear against aggro.
Gnomeferatu: Guaranteed discarding of your opponent’s deck (avoids stuff like polymorph deathlord).
Deathlord: Protect yourself + thin out opponent’s deck.
Implosion: Additional removal plus board presence. Getting a lot of imps helps the Doom spell as well.
    Loatheb:
Reno: Heals you back up from Bloodbloom + Doom combo. Can play all 3 cards on turn 8.
Doom: Board clear + card draw
    N’Zoth: Summon army of Deathlords.

    4. Frost Bolt
    5. Primordial Glyph

Quest mage is very effective and very fun in this brawl!
    – Open the Waygate
    – Archmage Antonidas
    – Frostbolt
    – Sorcerer’s Apprentice
    – Molten Reflection
    – Arcane Intellect
    – Ice Block
    – Ice Barrier
    – Primordial Glyph
    – Flamecannon
How it works is every spell you cast (excluding the ones you got in your mulligan) count towards the quest’s completion, since they didn’t start in your deck, you discovered them. Because of this, you get the reward incredibly quickly through removing minions, playing secrets, and drawing cards. Arcane Intellect is super good since you get two 1-cost cards that discover a card, which increases the progress towards the quest! Play to survive until turn 7, balancing removal and survival with collecting combo pieces through discover. You need four apprentices, and the reflections each count as one. Then, assemble the combo and unleash exodia! Super fun, would highly recommend!

You dont even need archmage, you will have infinite turns to toy with your opponent, can just attack face with sorcerer and keep having turns thru waygate -> arcane intelligence-> discover card-> waygate

      October 11, 2017 at 4:15 pm

Yeah, I totally forgot I made that deck like over a year ago… anyways I’ve got an improved version!

      Swapped Cards:
Kezan Mystic -> Mage Quest: Played about 10 tavern brawls today and so far not very many mages and thus less secrets needed. And even if the tavern meta switches to mages later you can just pop their Ice Block and play Time Warp to defeat them next turn!
Frost Bolt -> Polymorph: This spell was meant just for early game removal but I noticed even aggro decks don’t matter when you have Ice block and Reno Jackson. Also, I played 2 games against Big Priest and they got a bit frustrated when they were resurrecting sheep back to life.
Deathlord -> Primordial Glyph: Deathlord was just a win condition by wiping out your opponents deck but this deck has a much stronger win condition now with Time Warp that it’s not need. The spell can get major discounts with Sorcerer Apprentice and it counts toward the quest too.

  18. Acanterelle
    January 22, 2017 at 10:22 am

    Hi,
I play as Acanterelle and would like to share with you all the meta destroying mage decklist I’ve developed.

    Arcane Missiles
    Sorcerer’s Apprentice
    Arcane intillect
    Flamewaker
    Ice Block
    Iornbreak owl
    Echo of Medivh
    Kezan Mystic
    Gadgetzan Auctioneer
    Reno Jackson

It has an extremely high consistency in terms of dealing with threats, and can be even stronger when milled as it’s spell draw for Echo of Medivh, Arcane missiles and ice block reaches 100% of your draw.

    MULLIGAN
I think in every matchup you want to mulligan for Reno, Owl, and apprentice which seems pretty counter intuitive, but is really strong. Getting double owls is particularly useful against inner fire priest, buff paladin, mana worm mage and a whole host of other decks.

    EARLY GAME
In any matchup where deathlord is played (which will mill your deck) you want to get at least one copy of each minion in your hand so that you can echo them.

Every other matchup is a rush towards the greed grind and patience game.

    MID/LATE GAME

As long as you can keep 3 apprentices in your hand with ‘echo’ you should be able to play ice block, multiple missiles, multiple arcane intellect, and then echo all the apprentices back to your hand which leaves threats on the board, deals damage across your opponent’s board and restocks your hand fully all in one turn.

    – You can also: Owl, apprentice x3, Echo.
    – Or Flamewaker, apprentice x3 echo

If your opponent can’t (or doesn’t) clear your board at any time and leaves out an apprentice you can drop:

    – Auctioneer & a second Apprentice then echo leading into completely refilling your hand

If in doubt (your opponent has a board), it is almost always advisable to play reno and go back up to 30. This applies even if your health is still in the 20 range.

Have fun wrecking the competition 🙂

    • Acanterelle

    Frosbolt

Troll deck with suboptimal winrate, and with incredibly long games and no real win condition:

    -Sap
    -Deathlord
    -Loatheb
    -Shadowcaster
    -Gadgetzan auctioneer
    -Reno Jackson
    -Vanish

Hard mulligan for Deathlord, play shadowcaster to copy multiple deathlords to completely remove all of the minions in your opponent’s deck. Play shadowstep on the Shadowcaster (Also on reno). Play until your opponent concedes. 😛 I had fun with it.

    Hi guys,

I created a deck because of a weapon quest, but it seems to have a high winrate so far. Not much counters are played currently. You just want to equip a weapon and upgrade it a lot. Raider helps you to finish off the opponent.
    Warrior:

    Upgrade
    Fiery War Axe
    Bloodsail Raider
    Bloodsail Cultist

To this base you can use some additional things like:
    Small time Buccaneer
    Patches
    Brann
    Orgrimar Aspirant
    Southsea Deckhand
    Arcanite reaper
    Ship’s cannon
    Naga corsair

    -Ice Lance
    -Patches
    -Mad Scientist
    -Arcane Intellect
    -Ice Block
-5 other secrets of your choice

Use Mad Scientist to take all the secrets out of your deck except Ice block (You can trigger him while you have an active ice block to ensure this.) Patches will remove himself. Once your deck has only the remaining four cards (scientist, ice lance, block, and intellect) use blocks to stay alive and intellects to fill your hand until you have 9 ice lances. Then all go face for 32 damage! Because your deck only has four cards, you should almost always be able to discover what you need in one or two draws.

Tip: if your opponent is breaking your block every turn, you can use ice lances to kill your own scientist on your turn after playing an ice block to thin out secrets safely.

This deck is only weak to Kezan Mystic, Deathlord (he takes away your scientists) and lots of armor gain. If there are lots of Deathlords, don’t use Vaporize.

Mulligan for Mad Scientist, Patches, and maybe Ice Block, Arcane Intellect, or Duplicate.

    Faerie dragon (replaceable)
    Shadow word: pain

Evident – 95% of decks being played in the brawl are Astral Druids of one kind or another – you should probably add one to your list haha!

Since Reno is eminently do-able for this… and it’s Wild format… I figured Krul the Unshackled and Mal’ganis. You just need to survive until turn 9.

    Flame Imp
    Darkbomb
    Deathlord
    Demonwrath
    Crystalweaver
    Imp-losion
    Doomguard
    Reno Jackson
    Krul the Unshackled
    Mal’ganis

    Patches
    Ship’s cannon
    Swashburglar
    Small-time bucaneer
    Preparation
    Counterfeit Coin
    Shiv
    Sap
    Eviscerate
    Gang up

Always mulligan for patches(it is a copy not the exact card dont worry)/swashburglar/small time bucaneer, ship’s cannon gang up.
    Tips:
Never play Patches without gang up unless its turn one swashburglar though it is still risky.
Always set up for ship’s cannon plus pirate activators. This will ensure enemy board gone.
    Best case scenarios:
turn 3 ships cannon plus pirate summon 3 patches
turn 5 ships cannon plus pirate summon 3 patches
turn 7 ships cannon plus pirate summon 3 patches
If enemy not dead by turn 7 just concede.
    If patches is dead, concede

This deck has been fine-tuned all day on the first day of tavern brawl and has 100% win rate in 27 games. It is the ultimate deck for gaining board presence, infinite health, and card counters. Here is the list below:
    (1) Frostbolt – Serves as either early removal or to stall a big minion.
    (2) Sorcerer’s Apprentice – Combo with Gadgetzan Auctioneerto infinitely fill your hand back up.
    (8) Gadgzetzan Auctioneer – The ultimate card draw mechanic.
    (9) Reno Jackson – Just an extra card so that you don’t have to play Ice Block every turn in some situations.
    (10) Arcane Giant – 0 mana 8/8 minions for huge board presence.

*Request to Site Admin: Can you please add this deck to your list? It’s proven to be one of the strongest decks in this tavern brawl!

    paladin:
    – Zombie Chow
    – Shielded Minibot
    – Muster for battle
    – Keeper of uldaman
    – piloted Shredder
    – Loatheb
    – Quartermaster
    – Sludge Belcher
    – Dr. Boom
    – Tirion Fordring

Winning condition: Play each turn, form t1 to t8, the most valuable card of hearthstone history ( I prioritize loatheb each discover when i’m playing against mage or any spell based combo class like wombo combo lock)

The deck has a really good ratio. I won 12 game of 14. The 2 lost where against the new archetype ”Yolo I puke all my beginning hand to create minimum one vancleef 12/12 rogue”

Hey guys! This is the deck I used for this weeks tavern brawl. I went 5-0 with it. None of the games were even close. Give it a try!

    1. Babbling Book*
    2. Ice Lance
    3. Sorcerers Apprentice
    4. Frostbolt
    5. Flamewalker*
    6. Mirror Entity
    7. Frost Nova
    8. Fireball*
    9. Flamestrike
    10. Archmage Antododias

Obliviously, you can tech out some cards if you feel they are not working for you. But ideally, you want to stall the game by freezing and board clear with flamestrike until late game. Then use archmage to finish them with constant fireballs. Hopefully you guys like it!

*Cards that can be teched out if you prefer.

Not fully fleshed out, but been having a lot of fun with the following discard lock deck
(based around building an overwhelming hand advantage since there is an infinite sized deck)

    1. Malchezar’s Imp (VIP – the deck revolves around getting two out on the

    2. Soulfire
    3. Darkshire Librarian
    4. Doomguard

    5. Silverware Golem (free summons)
    6. Fist of Jaraxxus (free creature removal)

    7. Sacrifical Pact (needed vs reno jackson and mage secret spam)
    8. Blood Imp (really just as a way to trigger pact cheaply without sacrificing Malchezar’s imps)

    9. Siphon Soul (late game creature removal / health recovery)
    10. Demonwrath (for use against super aggressive decks)

    A fun Rogue-combo deck:
    Backstab
    Preparation
    Shadowstep
    Leper Gnome
    Eviscerate
    Brann Bronzebeard
    Unearthed Raptor
    Sludge Belcher
    Emperor Thaurissan
    Sprint

The deck tries to win with the Leper Gnome-Brann-Raptor-Raptor-Shadowstep-Raptor-Shadowstep-Raptor-Eviscerate combo (it does 32 damage when fully executed).

Use Backstab and Eviscerate (if needed) to stay alive, along with Sludge Belcher. Ideal situation is Prep-Sprint on turn 3 (coin) or 4, and then use mana following turn to set everything up and get correct cards. You should be winning on turn 7 or 8.

i find out a lock-up combo with mage,

the cards that it is really important are:

sorcerer’s apprentice, Gadgetzan Auctioneer, 1 mana spell (arcane misiles), and ice block

then you can go infinite in turn 8 or 7 or 6 with emperor depend if you have the coin

the you can always discover for free and play any other 0 mana spells try to have your ice block up, and then always have another to play next trun.

the rest of the cards are board control and not diying

frost nova, volcanic poison, arcane blast (1 mana good for combo), mirror images, frost nova.

it is hard to pull out but once you do it your opponent hardly can do anything, i just beat hunter on 1 life and play like 3 or 4 turns after.

      Frostbolt
      Sorcerer’s Apprentice
      Frost Nova
      Ice Block
      Volcanic Potion
      Emperor Thaurissan
      Gadgetzan Auctioneer

How does beneath the grounds work in this brawl? I’m assuming that the nerubian doesn’t spawn, but does it force your opponent to “discover” useless cards?

    • Evident - Author
      January 18, 2017 at 11:29 am

Yeah, your opponent could never draw it but they’d show up in their Discover (I’m guessing that’s how it works).

Since the cards never actually cycle out of your deck, it makes Reno Mage/Priest exceptionally powerful and frustrating to play against. Throw in a Kazakus with a Solia/Raza and it’s pretty potent. I played as a priest, and it went pretty well:

    PW: Shield
    Twilight Whelp
    Faerie Dragon
    SW: Pain
