Deck Import

This Aggro Pirate Warrior deck list guide for the Kobolds and Catacombs expansion will teach you how to play this extremely fast paced Warrior deck. It uses aggressive Pirate minions with Weapons and Weapon synergy to generate a lot of early game pressure to defeat your potion. Our Aggro Pirate Warrior guide includes Mulligans, Gameplay Strategy, Card Substitutions, and Combos/Synergies!

Introduction to Pirate Warrior

Pirate Warrior is very controversial because it has the ability to kill opponent’s very quickly and many view unfairly. This deck, however, can run out of steam  and can be hurt with tech cards such as Golakka Crawler and Weapon removal like Acidic Swamp Ooze, Gluttonous Ooze, or Harrison Jones. One of the big weaknesses of this deck is that it contains no card draw, so if it draws a slow hand or a handful of weapons it can just lose on the spot.

The deck took a pretty big hit with the nerf to Fiery War Axe, but Prince Keleseth seemed to soften the blow. Pirate Warrior isn’t as strong as it once was, but with the addition of some new tools in Kobolds and Catacombs it might be in a better spot than it was in the Frozen Throne meta.

Kobolds and Catacombs Update

Warrior didn’t get anything too great for Pirate Warrior in the Kobolds expansion. However, it did get Lesser Mithril Spellstone which looks kind of like an odd addition, but when paired with Spiteful Summoner makes for a pretty big mid-to-late game board swing. As most aggressive decks have done, it also includes Corridor Creeper which rewards aggressive lists for trading early and allowing them to accelerate a higher stat minion to the board.

Update: Aggro Pirate Warrior – February 2018

It might finally be the nail in the coffin for Pirate Warrior in Standard. Patches and Corridor Creeper are both being nerfed. Creeper looks to be totally dead, but Patches could still see play in full Pirate based decks. Pirate Warrior might be finally relegated to Wild.

Starting Out Tips

First, don’t just throw a minion down on your first turn and immediately pass the turn. I can’t tell you how often I would absentmindedly do this while Patches the Pirate would be shot out of a cannon and make me feel like a fool. This is an aggressive deck, but it doesn’t mean you have to play every card at lightning speed! Another card that tripped me up in the beginning was Bloodsail Cultist. For some reason I thought it buffed a weapon if you had a weapon equipped, unfortunately for me it requires that you have a Pirate on the board. Hopefully these couples of tips will save you some of the embarrassment I originally went through.

Why is Patches the Pirate Good?

I see this question a lot so I’d like to address it. Patches is a minion that lands on your board for free the majority of the time unless you get him in your first draw or mulligan. Think of it as starting the game off with a 1/1 minion already on the board, and a deck that has 29 cards in it. A thinner deck enables you to draw more reliably. Also, starting off with a 1/1 minion on your board for free gives you a pretty nice advantage. Patches is also a Pirate, which in a Pirate synergistic deck means you’ll be able to enable cards like Bloodsail Cultist more easily on curve.

Think about this first turn on The Coin: N'Zoth's First Mate, The Coin, Patches hits the board, you play Southsea Deckhand. You get a 1/3 Weapon, two 1/1s, and a 2/1 on turn one. That’s a pretty crazy first turn and is difficult for your opponent to deal with.

Aggro Pirate Warrior Mulligan Guide and Strategy

Without Fiery War Axe you are looking for cheap minions to populate your hand. Fire Fly, N'Zoth's First Mate, and sometimes Southsea Deckhand (with support). However, the key now is Prince Keleseth. If you start with him in your hand your winrate increases significantly! Always be mulliganing hard for the Prince and only really look to keep Fire Fly & N’Zoth’s First Mate which are very good openers. If you have a 1-drop and especially if it’s a Pirate, then you keep Corridor Creeper! I know it sounds crazy to keep a 7-cost minion, but just trading a few minions brings it down to a 4-cost card, and by turn 3 it could be even lower. You will often be able to get Corridor Creeper down to 0-mana by turn 4 which gives you a huge tempo swing.

You can potentially keep a 3-drop like Bloodsail CultistFrothing Berserker, or Southsea Captain if you have Keleseth already.

Aggro Pirate Warrior Play Strategy

Pressure and damage to the face is the name of the game with this very aggressive deck. Now, that doesn’t mean you should send every Weapon charge to the face, in fact the Weapons are normally better used for keeping their board relatively clean while your fragile minions continue to punish your opponent. You want consistent and repetitive damage with your minions, but trading away a couple 1/1s to preserve a larger minion on your board is usually the correct play.

Using your Weapon charges also greatly depends on what you have in your hand. If your hand is clogged with Weapons then you should be more readily using up the charges. This is especially the case with N’Zoth’s First Mate’s weapon, you are going to have stronger weapons to get to in the later game so it can be best to use it up while you can.

In Aggro matchups, you want to make trades as efficiently as possible so you are dictating the terms. You’ll only go hard to the face when you make your final push for lethal. Aggro decks have a hard time coming back into the game. In the Pirate Warrior mirror, they won’t be able to draw into many cards. In these Aggro matches, you can pretty much flood the board as quickly as possible because there’s rarely any AOE issues (unless it’s Shaman with Maelstrom Portal).

This deck gets a whole lot better against aggressive matchups if you are able to play Prince Keleseth. The +1/+1 stats give you a big advantage and this alone can often determine the game.

Control matchups are the times where you can’t really afford to make trades. You need to pressure them and force them to keep playing on the back foot. If they are able to eliminate your early threats you’ll have a hard time coming back in the game unless you find yourself able to build up a large damage combo with stuff like Leeroy Jenkins.

Corridor Creeper is the new kid on the block, and a lot has already been said about it in the community. It’s an insane card, and it’s even better when used in a deck that has Patches the Pirate in it. You are often trading your minions back and forth in the early game, so Corridor Creeper’s cost is reduced immediately. On turn 2 if you and your opponent both played a card and have Patches on the board then Creeper is already going to be down to 3-mana with those trades. So you could see a scenario where the costs 1 or 0-mana on turn 3!

The kind of odd addition to Pirate Warrior is the Spiteful Summoner & Lesser Mithril Spellstone combination. You basically don’t ever want to draw the spellstone and instead are hoping to get a good outcome from Spiteful Summoner, but you don’t really want to draw her until late in the game. These two cards do help give you some late game firepower, but if you draw them early they are going to be pretty dead in your hand.

Aggro decks test your ability to understand how to play your hand. You’ll have to learn how to judge when it’s time to go all-in, and when you should trade. If you are against the ropes, then it’s best to just throw it all on the board and see if they can answer it. If they have the answers, well you were probably going to lose anyway. On the other hand, you’ll win some games you had no business winning because they didn’t have the cards to stop you.

Aggro Pirate Warrior Alternate/Tech Cards

These are cards that go in and out of the deck and can also be used to replace cards you might not have.

  • Upgrade! – You have a lot of weapons so this card makes sense, unfortunately it’s a bit weak if you don’t have a weapon and you will rarely want to equip the 1/3.
  • Bloodsail Corsair – Early game pirate with an upside, unfortunately it’s pretty much outclassed by Fire Fly and the synergy Fire Fly has with Creeper.
  • Mortal Strike – Great finishing potential and allows you to do direct damage around taunt minions. Unfortunately if you draw this in the early game it’s really bad, and can be a completely dead draw when you are looking for a weapon or minion. One good thing about this card just existing is that a better opponent will play around it and potentially give you an extra turn to live by avoiding bringing you down to 12.
  • Arathi Weaponsmith – Weak stats and an okay effect, but you are looking for impact out of a 4-mana minion and you are largely hoping to be leading into turn-5 with an Arcanite Reaper.
  • Captain Greenskin – Obviously a strong card when you have a Weapon equipped, but can be really slow if you don’t.
  • Spellbreaker – A great way to get rid of an annoying taunt while developing the board.
  • Naga Corsair – Still sees play in some versions of the deck, it’s a solid body with Pirate synergy that can buff your weapon. Also great for budget versions of the deck.
  • Phantom Freebooter – A new card from the Frozen Throne, it isn’t a game changer but it can be very strong when played with a big Arcanite Reaper. It also will demand removal if you hit it with a buff and hopefully allow the rest of your board to survive.
  • Bittertide Hydra – Largely being phased out by Corridor Creeper at the moment, but if you don’t have the Creeper then play the Hydra instead.

Aggro Pirate Warrior Card Substitutions

  • Patches the Pirate – I wouldn’t run this deck without him. Before you ask, yes I would craft him still even though he’s going to be rotated out of Standard when the first new expansion releases in 2018.
  • Captain Greenskin – Solid card but not necessary if you don’t have it. Corsair or Bitter Tide Hydra can work in its spot, but you might even want Spellbreaker to deal with annoying taunts.
  • Leeroy Jenkins – This is a very solid finisher. Leeroy is also a solid craft because he won’t rotate out of Standard (unless he’s added to the Hall of Fame, in which case you’ll get full dust back). You can run Bittertide Hydra instead, or try any of the alternate cards listed above.
  • Spiteful Summoner – If you don’t have her then don’t run the Mithril Spellstones either. Bittertide and Naga Corsair are your best options if you haven’t used them as replacements yet.
  • Corridor Creeper – This card fits in just about every deck right now, but if you don’t want to craft them you can run Bittertide Hydra instead or as a really cheap option go with Naga Corsair.

Aggro Pirate Warrior Combos and Synergies

That first turn N'Zoth's First MatePatches the Pirate, The Coin, with Southsea Deckhand is an awesome combo that gives you an impressive board state.

All of these cheap minions synergize well with Corridor Creeper. Try to get it to 0-mana so you can play it on the same turn as another minion for maximum tempo swing.

If you have Prince Keleseth in your hand, you might not want to play a Pirate immediately so you can buff your Patches and get a 2/2 charger on the board for free. This can be the case if you went second and your opponent plays a minion that will just easily kill Patches.

And if i was your friend i would be like so? Nerfing the axe is not really going to affect pirate warrior that much however if your friend was attempting to run control warrior that would be the reaction i would wait for.

Boy, without the Mortal Strikes this deck really struggles. There are too many times right at the end of a game where even having a silence to bust through taunts doesn’t help because you’re out of damage.

    • PirateMan
      August 25, 2017 at 12:56 am

Mortal Strikes are completely trash in this meta… 4 dmg from hand is nothing man. If your op has big Taunt the only way is silence. Im always happy when I see this kind of comment. Kid this deck needs curve with huge tempo ahead to beat your opponent. Ez From Rank 5 to Legend so fast. Ez Druid Ez Life. FeelsGoodMan

This is the worst deck in the KFT meta, I do not recommend anyone to craft it, surely does not worth the dust spent on this crap.

There’s still a possibility it makes it into the deck, but it’s still early in the expansion. I think it might be better in a slower deck.

I’m still playing my pre-KTF Warrior Pirate decklist with decent success.

How? This deck is basically a coin toss. If you don’t have the right cards within the first 6 turns, you’ve already lost, and if you’ve withered the enemy down enough where you’re relying on a Mortal Strike or Leeroy- that doesn’t sound very productive.

I’m losing about 65% of my games. Too many druids, priests, and now with lifesteal as a factor, and all these taunts in the game- this deck doesn’t work consistently enough to rank up.

Wait what, some asshat still plays this cancer..?

If you like pirate warrior, good for you, just know that this really is a brainless piece of shit for a deck. And I should know, I used to play face hunter.

Anyway, if you like going face, face, face, keep playing this. You also might like murloc pally or ‘lust shaman. Give them a go, just be careful not to get overwhelmed by the learning curve 😉

I’m playing this deck for 2 months in a row.

Never got legendary. Max rank was 2 in june and 5 now in july.

U need luck and play a lot. Totally time consuming if you want to get legendary in the ladder.

Anyway… without patches its not the same deck. But if you r the first to play and the other player is no Mage, i think u can try your luck.

You’re an idiot then lmao. when i was going for my first legend i went from rank 5 to legend with a 75% winrate, you don’t need luck you only need the understanding of BASIC mechanics of the game.

Eating your own pirate is just a net gain of a 2 mana 2/3 and golakka gets stranded if you only have bigger pirates on board.

Hey hearthstonetoodecks, thanks for this amazing deck, had a lot of success with it, climbed to rank 5 in an afternoon. Just wondering if there is any space for improvement, for example I think naga corsair is not impactful enough and the stat distribution makes her easy to remove. How do you think of 2 nagas? Will it be better to trade 1 or both nagas for tech cards?

    • K
      June 9, 2017 at 11:11 pm

You can consider subbing naga for Captain Greenskin or a Spellbreaker if you are facing a lot of taunts. (pala/taunt warrior)

    Sould i craft patches?

    • CD001
      June 2, 2017 at 5:29 am

If you just look at the card he’s a bit meh – like Thalnos he’s not got the *Wooooooooh! big shiny legendary monster!* factor. But like Thalnos it’s what he brings to the game for the cost…

In most games (i.e. running a pirate package) he’s a free 1/1 charge creature, with Pirate synergy, that thins your deck by a card – so he’s good in aggro decks (obviously) but also combo decks where you’re thinning your deck to hit the win condition; he’s like extra value from the Swashburglars in Miracle Rogue. Token decks can run a couple cheap pirates as well and Patches adds a free charge body on the board that turn, which could be significant with Bloodlust or Savage Roar.

It annoys me slightly that the card is so ubiquitous – but there is a reason for that.

if i dont have leeroy, is it okay to replace with execute?

reckless is a better substite, but against taunt, isnt execute the best removal after mortal strike to hit face?

    • Facundo
      May 23, 2017 at 9:24 pm

Execute requires an activator, I think it’s awful in this deck. I’d try replacing Leeroy with spellbreaker; this way you con silence a taunt and go face with your minions or hero. Other posibilities are golakka crawler, ravasaur runt or a charge minion like argent commander or wolfrider (I’m not a fan of reckless at all but it could also work).

    • Alex
      May 17, 2017 at 11:14 am

I think that mortal strike is much better than a minion , wich in best case is a 5/2 or a 2/2 with dive shield or windfury. Mortal strike is better because it can be a finisher just like leroy, and if your opponent has a taunt is better to slam 4 or 6 dmg to his face 🙂

This deck works great- I never played a warrior in my life before today and I went from rank 25 to rank 11 in just a few hours.

I do understand why so many people are frustrated with it though- its very dependent on getting the cards you need in the opening hand. If you don’t get lucky at the beginning there’s a good chance you won’t even be able to play a card until turn 4-5 when its already too late.

That being said, if you do manage to get the main cards in your opening draw, this deck plows over every opponent.

    Thanks for the deck!

    • ValentinoM

I’m playing the deck without a second Captain with the account of my girlfriend and put in a Golokka Crawler, if you can eat an enemy pirate well, maybe you don’t want 1 health minions on the board so you eat your own pirate and sometimes you have to be careful what you Play first to not eat your own guys if you don’t want to but last season I had an incredible Win strike fron 15 to 5 without a lost. But I crafted Leeroy before for her. Before that she used a Reckless Rocketer. A greenskin will work too I think, or Argent Commander but Leeroy is definetly better. Maybe you put a Hungry Crab in to tech Paladin decks.
Sometimes you just have to accept, that you will loose because of no Business but trade minions or kill minios with your weapon is an important decision, sometime trading with minions is better if you cann go leathel in one or 2 turns then

Don’t run any Aggro Pirate Warrior decks without those cards, Southsea Captain is mandatory, and Leeroy helps you to finish the game in turn 5.

I am rank 7 (I reached it with others decks) and I don’t think this is a Tier 1 deck. I have this Pirate Warrior deck and the only good matchups are Priest, Jade Druid and Quest Rogue. It is bad against Midrange Paladin, Midrange Hunter, Miracle Rogue, Token Druid, Burn Mage. So it is bad against the most decks of the current meta. (May 2017)

      You’re playing it wrong then.

This deck performs really good against Midrange Paladin and Miracle Rogue

I crafted a second Upgrade (now I have the full deck) and the deck change a lot. I reached Rank 3 with other deck but now I am using this deck and I am almost reaching Rank 2.

Hey evident I wanted to ask in the top part of the guide it is mentioned you can sub in green skin for a naga cursair but is it better to sub in green skin or leave the naga cursair in as I got it recently from a pack and was wondering if I shoul put green skin in the deck

Pros dont use it in their deck, but I cant really see why. Yes, it is 1 mana slower than a Naga, but the upgrade to the weapon is so much better! I personally love Greenskin. I know I am also in the minority.

I think I know why there are so many complaints (now). The deck has absolutely zero draw. If you don’t have a perfect hand at the start, or mulligan a perfect hand, you STILL might not have a win if you have crap draws. I used to play this deck (with a Greenskin as I had no Leeroy) when I had Sir Finley. Even then if I didn’t get a Warlock hero power with Finley it was a bad game.

I don’t play ranked, so maybe at the top things are different. However, I have great success with swapping out the following in Casual. Take AT LEAST TWO out of the following, up to FOUR:
1.) Take out Patches. (Really HSTD…you guys love this card. We get it. I actually pulled a Patches. Didn’t have to craft him. He’s a decent card. Would he be worth 100 dust to craft? Probably. Is he worth 400 dust to craft? Not really. Is he worth 1600 dust to craft? HELL NO. His ONLY buff in this deck is SSC)
2.) Take out 2 of either Mortal and/or Heroic Strike. Tough call. One of either, or 2 of both. I prefer one each.
    3.) Take out 1 of the N’Zoths.

    Add:
1.) Two Battle Rage. Your hero WILL be damaged. Your minions will likely be damaged, and you’ve removed a couple of the 1 health minions.
2.) If you took out at least 3 cards and one was a Mortal Strike, add a Polluted Hoarder.
    1.) Add a Commanding Shout.

That’s really given me the draw I need, at least for just pretty much constant wins at Casual. Like I said, your Netdeckers that only play Legendary will probably find flaws in it, but this works for me.

We don’t just come up with these opinions out of nothing, they are based on statistics from various sites like Metastats, Vicious Syndicate, HSReplay, and sites with opinions from pros like Tempo Storm. There has literally never been a version of Pirate Warrior that has not played Patches the Pirate since he’s been released. You are severely underestimating the cards power if you think he’s not worth being in this deck. You do realize that he’s also played in Aggro Druid AND Crystal Rogue? These are three of the better decks in the meta right now, so yes it is well worth 1,600 dust.

Patches gives you extra chip damage in the early game, and also allows you to trade efficiently with weapons and/or minions. Getting a free 1/1 on the board in the early game is extremely powerful.

The cards you suggest are fringe cards that are generally not worth adding to the deck.

Battle Rage is not that useful because the majority of the time you are either trading with your weapon or fully trading your minions. It can be a dead card in the early game, and is just an okay draw in the mid-game because you are usually looking for damage at that point.

You would NEVER take out a N’Zoth’s First Mate. It’s one of the best early game cards you can get. You not only get a 1/1 minion and a 1/3 weapon, but also Patches which represents a bunch of early damage and the ability to trade into early game minions.

You could maybe argue for removing one Mortal Strike, but it would likely be for something like Bittertide Hydra. I would NEVER put Polluted Hoarder (too slow) in this deck, and Commanding Shout wouldn’t be high on my list of cards to add to this deck (it’s dead in the early game, and is only good in certain situations).

I think the major reason people have been complaining about this deck is that it’s flat out not as powerful as it used to be. The meta is way more balanced now, and this deck gets countered by a few popular decks. The other reason is people are likely playing it wrong. You need to play smarter than before and make trades to maximize every single point of damage. This is especially the case now because the deck isn’t as overpowered as it once was.

Well, thank you for the explanation. Like I said, it works for me at casual, but I can see what you’re saying against high-end ranked. When I play this exact deck in casual (minus Leeroy which I don’t have +Cpt Greenskin) I tend to do around 15 damage right off the bat and suddenly I have no cards, no draw, and no board control, so the draw subs really help in that situation, since I can at least have something in hand as a response.

        • Gnarkill
          May 18, 2017 at 3:45 pm

There are no words for what I just read! Patches, if Im not mistaken, tends to be one of the most, if not THE most used Legendary in tournaments! His tempo, deck thinning and synergy are just too good. Sure, its just a crappy 1/1… thats free… with charge… in a pirate deck… that thins the deck for better draws. Is that enough reasons?

N’Zoth First Mate, the sexiest thing you could possibly have on a turn one drop.

    • Mitch
      May 11, 2017 at 4:04 am

I’m not going to call you out and be a dick so I’ll take time to explain it.

Patches forms part of an engine. In every card game, deck thinning and draw power wins games. It’s a known fact.
Patches for all purposes is weak. But, his overall presence is above average.
He puts early game pressure on your opponent and thins the deck by one, allowing you to see your cards quicker.
Mortal strike and heroic strike are two sides of a coin. Mortal strike allows you to face hit for that crucial finishing damage when they are walled uo with taunts and heroic strike can either be a 7 or 9 damage to face with weapon. It is large damage to the face that can’t be replaced
N’zoth as stated above with patches. Forms the engine. You want to see it in the opening hand. So two copies is optimal to have a better chance of seeing it. It gives a 1/3 with a patches on board. Giving you a two damage face hit on your first turn. Then giving your opponent two targets to remove.

Would it be good to put a silence card like ironbeak in this deck? Currently hovering around rank 3 and most of my opponents have taunts. Loads of paladins and whenever a spikeridged steed gets played I feel almost like it’s an auto-loss.

I just get from rank 10 with zero stars to rank 5 without a loss with the account from my girlfriend I think it’s 16-0 it is just sick. One game against Priest was a little bit close the other were ok. I’m playing the deck often and it is important to trade right or to know what cards you can face the next turns and if it were better to hit the face with all you got.
played exact the same list excluding one Captain because she’s missing one and added a Golakka Crawler Captain were definetly better but I worked . HAve fun with it

This deck is pretty solid and I run one very similar. If you are net decking and expect to just walk up the ladder though, you won’t do well. For this deck to really shine you should know every possible play like the back of your hand. Playing fast improves the odds of your opponent rushing and making a mistake, and you need to play this thing fast (I will even drag my feet if playing against pirate warrior to counter that). If you haven’t won by the bottom of the 7th you are probably going to lose. If you have to think about what to do when playing this deck, you’re doing it wrong — one of the reasons people called it cancer. Play a dozen or so games in casual and try again.

    Hey,

I don’t know who is in charge of updating decks and tier list, but there is something to do urgently on this website, which should be the best one for Hearthstone advices and tips.

First, this deck, with Hunter, Quest Rogue, Shaman midrange and some other decks need an update.

But most of all, the ranking of decks tier list is completly bullshit. For real, how can Pirate Warrior can be on tier 1 currently ? How can Aggrio Druid can be tier 2 ?? The number of War face in the actual meta has hugely decrease. Maybe it’s a question of time till they come back, but right now we cannot say this deck in tier 1.

    • Evident - Author
      April 20, 2017 at 8:58 am

This deck and Quest Rogue were just updated. Pirate Warrior is absolutely one of the best decks in the meta. Vicious Syndicate just released their tiers and Pirate Warrior was the number one deck across all ranks.

I am having trouble with the Midrange Hunter deck types. I keep running into Alleycat, Ratpack, Kindly grandmother etc. It’s tough to deal with all the minions with this deck type since there isn’t any board clear cards.
Any suggestions? I was thinking of maybe adding a whirlwind/ravaging ghoul/Taunt card and dropping the naga corsairs?

    • PapaJason
      April 19, 2017 at 12:00 am

You should be able to handle midrange hunter with this deck list. I run into them often and only feel at a disadvantage when both of these things occur together:
      1. They topdeck alley cat
      2. We don’t topdeck Nzothh

Otherwise you have a good at them. Consider changing the way you are playing them
