Mulligans

General Mulligans

In general, any of the low-cost drops in the list will do.

In addition to the general mulligans for low-cost minions, this deck has quite a few effective anti-aggro tools. Flame Ward and Volcanic Pot are very helpful against the intense early-game boards of Odd DH and Pirate Warrior. Zephrys provides quite a bit of flexibility, both giving additional board clears and weapon removal (versus Ancharrr or Warglaives of Azzinoth). Doomsayer usually gets silenced versus DH, but it comes in handy against other aggro decks. Keeping Reno may seem somewhat ambitious / greedy, but enough matchups versus aggro are ultimately decided almost solely on drawing him that I've usually found keeping him to be worth it.

Description

I’ve barely seen any other Reno Quest Mages on ladder recently, and I really hope that people start trying it out more since it’s one of the funnest decks I’ve ever played. Somewhat paradoxically, my winrate has actually gotten higher since the nerf to Open the Waygate, since the deck’s primary bad matchup was non-Reno Quest Mage (since it just can’t win the quest completion race). Since that version’s presence has gone down significantly, this deck has a lot more room to breathe, while not being as affected by the nerfs due to its joint combo / control nature.

This decklist in particular doesn’t run the Magic Trick/Cyclone/Apprentice combo (or Archmage Solarian), which have become quite standard. Instead, I included additional anti-aggro tools (Doomsayer and Volcanic Potion) and late-game cards (Alexstrasza and The Amazing Reno). Although quest completion is slower, the additional survivability and lethality (provided by Alexstrasza) has proved to be a net benefit.
