Here, There Be Dragons – Current Dragon Decks in Hearthstone Standard

Dragon decks have never quite had their place in the sun. They’ve always kind of lingered in the background of the meta, Dragon Priest has had its moments, but it never quite stuck around for too long. Dragon Warrior also had moments, but usually lost out to the more powerful Control Warrior. Blackrock Mountain was thought to be the birth of the Dragon Paladin, but once it released it turned out to be disappointing and never saw too much play. Whispers of the Old Gods again brought us some Dragons (Midnight Drake, Scaled Nightmare), but most of them don’t see play, and only the new Deathwing, Dragonlord has entered many decks.

Dragons Looking for a Home (Lair?)

These are some of the unfortunate Dragons that aren’t seeing much play.

  • Coldarra Drake: The card has decent stats, but unfortunately (maybe this is for the best) a deck that revolves around pinging your opponent’s face to death never evolved.
  • Hungry Dragon: It turns out that unless you have a strong board, summoning a 1-Cost minion for your opponent is a pretty big negative.
  • Dragonkin Sorcerer: This card saw a bit of play in Dragon/Buff Priest, but once Priest lost Velen's Chosen it has seen little play.
  • Nozdormu: While this card might be the ultimate counter to Lifecoach, it has never seen a lot of play. The card still leads to some exciting moments when it is summoned from Confessor Paletress.
  • Midnight Drake: 4-Health is just too easily dealt with, so there’s rarely going to be a time where this card lives long enough to get an attack in. Even if you paired it with something like Brann Bronzebeard, the card just goes down too easily.
  • Scaled Nightmare: Scaled Nightmare is a slower card that requires the investment of buff cards to be threatening. You would likely have to wait two turns before the attack became meaningful. It also dies to Stampeding Kodo which is being played in multiple decks.

Dragons on the Rise

Some Dragons have come out of the shadows recently!

Dragon Deck Lists in Standard

Keep in mind that I’m not saying these decks are going to get you rank 1 legend, I’m just showing you what lists exist in Standard right now. I will say, however, that both Dragon Priest and Dragon Warrior are perfectly viable decks that would likely bring you to Legend.

Trump had a nice little run with this Dragon Priest on stream recently. This particular deck leans on some finishing power from N'Zoth, The Corruptor which works nicely with Chillmaw.

Dragon Priest is one of the most successful Dragon decks in Hearthstone. Most Dragon decks suffer in the early game, but Priest makes up for this fact with Twilight Whelp and Wyrmrest Agent. One of the big problems with the deck (and most Dragon decks) is there will be times when you just won’t have Dragons at the right time. Wyrmrest Agent and Blackwing Corruptor are good cards, but they aren’t so great if you don’t have a Dragon in your hand.

Deck List

Hotform played some Dragon Druid prior to the Standard release so there is some history with this list. Druid has no class based Dragons, but the nature of their ramping cards allows them to play with the generally higher costed minions.

Druid has a bit of an identity crisis. The class has run a few different lists, but none of them are really top tier: C’Thun, Beast, Ramp, and now a bit of Dragon. It will be interesting to see how the class shapes up in the near future.

Deck List

This is a bit of a spin-off of the very popular Tempo Warrior. Th3Rat is bringing this to the Americas Spring Prelims, so here’s hoping he has luck with the list. One of the most interesting inclusions is Faerie Dragon. This is a card we’ve seen very little of outside of Arena to the point that most people (me) forget it is a Dragon. 3/2 minions are generally not preferred because they lose to 1-drops and cards like Disciple of C'Thun, but they do at least trade with the ever popular Tunnel Trogg.

Deck List

This might be one of the most interesting decks I’ve ever seen. Not only does it have Dragon Synergy, it uses both N'Zoth, The Corruptor AND Yogg-Saron, Hope's End from Whispers of the Old Gods. If that wasn’t enough, the deck also uses Reno Jackson with double Elemental Destruction. As much as I think this deck is awesome, it might be for the best that it doesn’t get popular seeing that it has 11 legendaries which makes even Control Warrior players start counting dust.

Blake is playing in the Americas Spring Prelims, so hopefully we get a chance to see this deck played on stream!

Deck List

This is one of LifeCoach’s pet projects recently. Warrior is just so good right now that people can run many different variations and have success. Just look at the options they have: Tempo, Control, Patron, Pirate, C’Thun, and Dragon Warrior. Many felt like the class was going to be in a tough spot after the loss of Death's Bite, but that just hasn’t been the case.
