Our Freeze Mage deck list guide for the Kobolds and Catacombs expansion, will teach you the ins-and-outs of this deck! This Freeze Mage guide includes Card Choices, Mulligans, Gameplay Strategy, and Card Substitutions!

Introduction to Freeze Mage

Freeze Mage is one of the oldest deck archtypes in Hearthstone. The basic premise revolves around constantly freezing and wiping the opponents board, so you can transition safely to the late game, where you can either out-value your opponent, or kill them outright with a combo.

The days of Ice Lance are long gone by now, but Freeze Mage is still alive and well, mainly thanks to Frost Lich Jaina. The ability to create Water Elemental and have them heal you when they attack, is a pretty powerful one, it turns out. The deck spends the majority of the early and mid game either drawing/generating cards or wiping/freezing the board, so it can transition to the late game, where it can shine. Primordial Glyph, Cabalist's Tome and Elise the Trailblazer give you enough extra fuel to outvalue most control decks, while Frost Lich Jaina can single-handedly win you the game against aggressive ones.

Key Cards/Combos

  • Arcane Artificer: A newly-released card, this little elemental provides you with armor each time you cast a spell, equal to its cost. This makes aggressive decks think twice before ignoring it, while providing you with some life-saving extra time to draw into your answers.
  • Coldlight Oracle: A substitution for the usual Acolyte of Pain, the oracles are aimed to target decks such as Control Warlock and Spiteful Priest that either keep a large hand size, giving you a chance to burn cards and accelerate their path to fatigue, or revolve around not drawing some of their cards. A well-timed coldlight can turn the game around in the blink of an eye.
  • Frost Nova / Blizzard + Doomsayer: This is one of the oldest tricks for Freeze Mage lists. Doomsayer, when combined with a freeze effect, is really good at stalling the game against aggressive decks, or forcing control decks to make weird decisions, such as wasting a card or choosing to “burn” their next draw.
  • Primordial Glyph: A pretty powerful discover effect, since it is limited to class spells and comes with a 2 mana discount. Primordial Glyph and Arcanologist are the most typical turn 2 plays you can have, since they give you something to do on the next turn.
  • Elise the Trailblazer: Aside from a solid 5-mana body, Elise provides you with extra cards to play, outside of your deck, which is especially potent when you face slower decks. Cards from the Un’Goro expansion have a high chance of being elementals, so they synergize with your Death Knight’s passive effect, an extra upside.
  • Skulking Geist: With a good enough body for a 6-drop, this minion’s battlecry removes all 1-cost spells from both decks. While you do not have to worry about that, other decks in the meta have pretty impactful cards at that mana spot, which can harm or even outright destroy (looking at you, Jade Druid) their game plan!
  • Sindragosa: The new Dr. Boom? Well, not quite. Still, this 8/8 Legendary Dragon provides you with a good amount of value against slow decks. The two 0/1 tokens that she spawns each provide you with a random legendary when killed, plus they synergize really well with the Death Knight’s Hero Power.
  • Frost Lich Jaina: One of the more thematic Death Knights, Jaina provides you with a new hero power and a passive effect; your hero power spawns a Water Elemental when it kills a minion and your elementals heal you when they deal damage, for the rest of the game.

Mulligans

Against Aggressive Decks

  • Arcane Artificer: Can provide you with early armor and require 1-2 trades from your opponent’s minions.
  • Doomsayer: Wiping the early aggression and giving you back tempo to win the board and transition to mid-late game safely.
  • Arcanologist: Decent body for early board control and guarantees Ice Block draw.
  • Frostbolt: Early removal for dangerous minions.
  • Frost Nova (if you already have Doomsayer in hand): When combined with Doomsayer on turn 5 (or 4 with the coin), this can wipe almost any board.

Against Slow Decks

  • Arcane Intellect: Card draw is of utmost importance in these matchups, so draw whenever possible.
  • Coldlight Oracle: Most slow decks have a pretty sizeable hand until the mid game, so burning 1-3 of their cards, while also drawing yourself is a pretty good deal.
  • Polymorph: Removing your opponent’s threats is a good thing, but denying powerful effects in the process is priceless.
  • Cabalist's Tome/Elise the Trailblazer: They both achieve similar things, so keeping one in hand gives you a chance to take full advantage of the effect as early as possible.
  • Frost Lich Jaina: If you play her early enough, you can overwhelm your opponent with your water elementals, forcing them to do desperate moves.

General Strategy

Facing Aggressive Deck

Your goal here is to stall the game long enough to play Frost Lich Jaina. Be careful of when you decide to use your spells, because every turn can be the last. Take your time to review your available options and keep yourself healthy as much as possible. If you can take a hit to guarantee a large board clear the following turn, go for it. You should only play coldlights if you really do not have any answers in hand, or can answer anything the enemy can throw down. If you face a lot of these decks, you should look to replace some of your late-game minions for early AoE, such as Volcanic Potion or even include one Ice Barrier to buy some time so you can stabilize.

Facing Slow Deck

This is where the deck shines the most. Your Death Knight keeps you healthy and provides you with a board, while you generate extra cards and remove your opponent’s threats. Cabalist's Tome, Elise the Trailblazer, Primordial Glyph and Sindragosa all have their moment in the spotlight in these matchups, surprising your opponent with extra burst, removal or threats that he cannot handle. Be mindful of your remaining cards and do not go too far towards fatigue, since you want the opponent to run out of cards before you. Other than that, use Polymorph on minions with powerful effects or deathrattles and Meteor on just big threats and overwhelm your opponent with hero-healing Water Elementals!

Card Substitutions

Elise the Trailblazer => Weapon removal minion: If you find yourself facing weapons pretty often, you could forego some of the value that Elise provides to deal with them, since she requires a lot of setup. Harrison Jones could provide you with extra card draw, in case you need it. If you find you have enough draw, go either for Acidic Swap Ooze or Gluttonous Ooze, depending on the kind of weapons you encounter.

Skulking Geist => Medivh, the Guardian: Should you find that you are facing a lot of heavy control decks, excluding Jade Druid, this change is recommended. Medivh provides really big swing turns, allowing you to develop big minions when using AoE or removal spells. Firelands Portal is especially good with him, providing you with a 5-drop and a 7-drop while removing an opposing minion.

Meteor => Volcanic Potion: A change purely targeting aggressive matchups, Volcanic Potion can help you survive the early onslaught of cheap minions and stabilize quicker. Meteor tends to be a glorified Volcanic Potion in those matchups anyway, so why not save the 4 extra mana?

Closing

Freeze Mage has evolved since the last time it saw decent play on the ladder. Even though it has become a clear control deck, rather than a combo/otk one, it has not lost its flavor; you still look to freeze the board and keep your opponent from developing his game plan. The difference is that you now look to out-value your opponents with big, impactful minions and gain card advantage through your card-generation effects. The deck is not an easy one to pilot, but it is as fun as ever! Take your time to decide on the best available play for the turn; the deck has plenty of removal and value, so make the best of it and you should come out on top!

Just want to make it clear to anyone asking for Medivhs Valet replacement and to anyone telling them they need it in the deck… Although it fits the deck it is not needed and by no means a necessity. Alot of the time you won’t hit with the 3 damage! In my variant of the deck I choose Coldwraith over him and it is DEFINITELY better, it’s a 3 drop rather than 2 drop in which we have plenty so when they miss their respective battlecrys is it is better, and you hit his battlecry 70% of the time… This is freeze mage guys card draw is everything and pinging for 3 pre-Alex is pretty average!

Im building this deck at this right moment, i got almost all the cards but for now i only have enough dust for one legendary, which one should i get first, either Alex or Antonidas?

Alex might be more flexible for other decks. You should only play this deck with both tho

alex sets up kill 90% of the time while antodidas rarely sees any play, she is much more vital to this deck archetype

Wow I thought there was no way freeze mage would survive. After all, the super key cards like emperor tharusan and forgotten torch was rotating out, and in addition, blizzard was trying to get rid of this archetype by moving ice lance into wild format. However, somehow Freeze Mage was able to not only survive the nerfs, but is actually sitting at a comfortable tier 2 (according to tempo storm) by using new things such as primordial glyph, which gives you a relatively big antonia’s turn, the nice 3 damage from medihv’s valet, and arcanologist which makes you draw into your defensive secrets super quickly. I got from rank 12 to rank 4 using this decklist, however i exchanged loot hoarder for eater of secrets, because of the large number of mages on the ladder.

    Still very fun deck.

Am playing this with 1x Pyro instead of Antonidus and 2x Stonehill instead of Barrier.

With Stonehill you get 4 taunts your opponent needs to trade into. Like it much better than a reactive barrier.

    • Stonekeep - Site Admin
      May 21, 2017 at 12:15 pm

In theory, the idea of Stonehill Defenders isn’t that bad. But in practice, it’s probably isn’t that good.

First problem is mana cost. To even match the 8 damage mitigation you get from the Barrier, you’d need to pay at least 6 mana in total most of the time, while Barrier costs 3. You rarely have “spare” mana playing as the Freeze Mage, each one of your turns is full of things you want to do, so having to pay extra 3 mana for the same effect is pretty bad (for that 3 mana you could play another Acolyte of Arcane Intellect to dig further into your deck).

Barrier also increases the Arcanologist consistency. With just 2 Blocks, you often end up drawing 1 or even 2 before your Arcanologists (on average, second one will be useless).

And last, but not least, Mage has no class Taunts. You’re only picking from the Neutrals, which makes it significantly worse than in e.g. Paladin, Warrior or Shaman, which have pretty powerful class Taunts.

Comment to the whole world: I am convinced that stonehill defender is a much better 3 drop than ice barrier in all mage builds. Stonehill defender amounts to 4 cards (yet only two deck slots) that save your life total. It’s also much more proactive. You can win by beating face instead of just waiting to draw burn. Thems my thoughts.

The thing making ice barrier good is the Arcanologist

    • NoneckGeorge
      June 24, 2017 at 7:07 pm

Hi, I dont really think Stonehill defender is better let me tell you why. Ice barrier = 8 life granted for 3 mana but Stonehill is only 4 life guaranteed for 3 mana and potentionally you could get up to 8 or more hp saved with Stonehill but it is VERY unlikely, and yes you get another taunt but you have to spend mana for the next taunt and in freeze mage you ABSOLUTELY CAN NOT waste whole turn to play taunt because you are not some taunt deck you have to use your mana to freeze the board or draw cards for your win condition. Another important factor is that barrier scales with Arcanologist and to pull the battlecry of Arcanologist consistently you should always have at least 4 secrets in your deck.

im new and this deck has taken me to rank 14 so i dont know if this is good or not but I traded acolyte with alarm-o-bot. since there are a lot of times I had no minions in my hand. frost nova alarm o bot than next turn having archmage swapped in and all my mana to spend on spells to build up fireballs.

Yeee you can get from alarmo bot archmage or you esential cart to win – alex so it bad.

Great guide! Thanks to you and Evident for everything you do to make Hearthstone Top Decks one of my favorite sites. I’ve been playing Laughing’s build lately and have had pretty good success with it. I also watched Day9 play a bunch of matches to Legend using a similar deck he put his own flavor on. I’m still learning and am not the best Hearthstone player by far. However, it is a great deck that allows me to win against all kinds of other decks.

How do we measure IQ, it seems subjective… as the seemingly endless low IQ that drifts unto this website would indicate the demise of the human civilization if they were to breed. Which is really sad for the hard work, time to write up such great guides, and articles on this site… just to have people, IMO, troll.. questions that are clearly answered in the article they have spent so much time crafting.

I’m testing a couple of swaps thoughts on it welcome.

    • novice engineer instead of loot hoarder
    • coldlight instead of acolyte

    • difficulty with priest matchups, the rare quest priest is particularly well suited.. thoughts on those match ups.

again thank you to stone and Evi for the work put into this place, I come here for the reads often as it’s just good reading if nothing else, but also keep up with changes. sometimes get great ideas on here, and sometimes just netdeck something to try it out. been coming here for awhile, far longer then actually signing up an account. just wanna say I appreciate the hard work.. and I just had to say something when you read over and over the “troll” comments..

Do you recommend crafting this deck? I have about 3k dust and I can really craft one deck only, is this a good deck to craft or do you recommend something else? I have both antonias and alex from packs, just need to craft the epics.

    • Sandrock
      April 17, 2017 at 11:36 am

To be honest there are a lot of decks out right now that easily beat this deck. I would hold off maybe another week or 2 If you’re looking to move up the ranks to see what is competitive. If you’re just looking for a deck to fart around with, see if anything is replaceable and try the deck out with the replaced cards before crafting a bunch and spending your 3k

    • Stonekeep - Site Admin
      April 19, 2017 at 4:06 pm

It really depends on whether you like this play style or not. The deck is very uninteractive and a lot of the games feel like you’re playing with yourself, or rather against your own deck (bad draws). With a perfect draws, you can beat almost any deck in the meta. But you can struggle with poor draws and it just feels really bad, because you can’t do anything.

When it comes to the strength, it’s one of the best decks in the meta, but it’s also pretty hard to play 100% correctly, so it might take you some time to start playing it at its max potential.

If you like the combo style gameplay and you don’t mind that the games will be pretty draw-dependant, then you should enjoy it. If you don’t, then you probably want to look for something else. I really like the deck, but I know a lot of people who don’t like this kind of play style.

Freeze mage is such an annoying deck. They don’t interact with the board at any point and with no healing in the game it is impossible to win. It’s such a boring and annoying deck to play. Nothing is more aggravating than getting pyroblasted in the face twice over two turns, and not being able to do anything about it.

    • Stonekeep - Site Admin
      April 19, 2017 at 4:09 pm

I’d strongly recommend crafting it, because they’re great for the mid game board control and give you more reach in the late game. But if you can’t afford to, I would recommend adding a second Pyroblast (for more reach) and maybe something like a Volcanic Potion to have a better board control vs Aggro in the mid game.

    • Aaron
      November 4, 2017 at 4:47 pm

Coldwraith is an awesome substitute… it has good body and you get a draw from him 70% of the time, very strong

  18. Antonidas
    April 15, 2017 at 6:39 pm

Antonidas is too slow right now, having more success with two pyroblasts and exclusively using glyph to find burn or aoe instead of cheap spells to feed antonidas

    • Stonekeep - Site Admin
      April 19, 2017 at 4:11 pm

What I always liked about Antonidas is that it absolutely has to be dealt with or else Freeze Mage wins. While Control decks will obviously keep an answer, it often happens that a deck like Midrange Hunter just doesn’t have a way to kill Antonidas and loses the game. Then even in the slow matchups it might happen that your opponent didn’t draw a big removal and a turn 10 Antonidas + Frost Nova means that you win the game on the spot. It happens only in like 10-20% of the matches, but it’s a nice addition.

Dude, Freeze Mage is one of the most skill-intensive decks in the game. Yes if a Freeze Mage draws well and PLAYS well, no deck can beat it. But thats the power of the deck, good players can make huge things happen with it! I’ve played a lot Freeze Mage in the past and you saying that Freeze Mage doesnt need skill just shows me that you’ve never played it and probably are crippling at rank 15 or are nee to the game.

    December 20, 2016 at 12:14 pm

I’ve been playing this deck for a while. I noticed two things. First, the Acolyte of Pain often caused me to draw too many cards. I tend to have 8-9 cards in hand most games, and it’s simply too risky to put him out there and possibly lose a valuable card. Second, most games are lose are because I don’t draw Alexstrasza quickly enough. I found a great substitution that solves both these problems and has benefited me greatly – remove 1 Acolyte of Pain, and add The Curator. He will automatically pull Alex into your hand, plus he’s a strong taunt minion that can help deflect a lot of the damage coming at you. The point of Acolyte of Pain is to try and draw Alex…The Curator guarantees that outcome, effectively doubling your odds of getting Alex.

        April 16, 2017 at 4:09 am

Dude Alexstrasza wins me like 9/10 of my Freeze Mage games what are you talking about? Every second player is Taunt warrior so dealing 15 damage with an 9 mana 8/8 feels pretty good to hurst him down the turns after that. If you draw Alex this (one of the worse matchups) is easy as hell. Without Alex its an insta lose.

I dont think it has any chance against Pirate Warrior, you just die way too fast.
Even though you can keep the board clean you just take too much weapon damage until you can play your combos.

        • Sandrock
          December 4, 2016 at 3:55 pm

I lost to freeze mage cuz they literally managed to keep me frozen the whole game… I attacked maybe 2 times and then that was it. theres no removal in pirate without the weapon damage.

          December 4, 2016 at 10:21 pm

That’s why LaughingHS runs double Ice Barrier instead of Flamestrike, it’s better against aggro decks, though pirate warrior is another story…

I love Freeze Mage, and this deck seems pretty solid.
I also love Malygos, even if it is not ideal I would prefere to add it into this deck due to nostalgic feelings l.
My guess is to either switch Flamestrike or Evolved Kobold for Malygos.
Currently I am using this deck as it is, but without Malygos, it just feels like something is missing for me.
So my question is, what is the best replacement to add Malygos to this deck?

I run Malygos is my deck with Emperor as as a combo with Malygos + ( reduced at least 1 time ) ice lance x 2 + 1 frostbolt is very damaging and adds more options to freeze mage (: Suggest you give it it a try. Good luck in further encounters 😀

What would be a good replacement for Forgotten Torch??

      November 18, 2016 at 1:11 pm

I don’t think you can play this deck without it. Most Freeze Mage cards aren’t replaceable.

      December 14, 2016 at 11:59 pm

You can play a 2nd ice barrier, a pyroblast, Antonidas or a cone of cold. I disagree that freeze mage cards aren’t replaceable – there are tons of small variations out there (like 1-4 card differences).

Also I’m not sure but the new 1-mana 2/1 that plays a secret for free might be playable too.

Cult Sorcerer is the one you’re thinking about, and yes that would work.

Card draw is more needed than spell damage. So Novice Engineer is gonna be better than Cult Sorcerer

How is the mirror match and any tips on how to getting the edge in those ?

    • Yoshi
      November 16, 2016 at 10:32 pm

Basically whoever draws Thaurissan/Alex first and doesn’t have their hand filled with the dead cards of the matchup (blizzards, doomsayers, frost novas, ice barrier, flamestrike) wins. Look for opportunities to burn cards if your opponent misplays with acolyte, never attack with minions if opponent has a secret (because you’re never breaking 8 armor ice barrier, so attacking actually gives him more health).

      November 16, 2016 at 11:02 pm

I haven’t had a mirror match but I’d guess: use your burn often since they have very limited healing.

I recommend to use malygos in this deck, because you can shred up control war with Alextrasza+Malygos+2frost bolts+2ice lances.(cheaped by emperor)

Freeze mage existed long before forgotten torch was added, somebody will find something to throw in.

kobold is a tech card that turned out to be surprisingly good. perhaps you could replace it with ice barrier as it seems they replaced it for kobold

Would you recommend this list over tom’s aggro freeze mage (list from september)?
I feel like tom’s list does not have that much stall-potential but is way easier to play and has early-game minions to control the board which is why you don’t need that much stall.

I play this -1 flamestrike -1 barrier and +2 mirror image. I understand teching in flamestrike if you like clears better but I think barrier is way too slow now without mad scientist.

I’ve been running Antoninus in my list and it has been really good. Even if it is sometimes a clunky draw, freeze mage is famous for havin dead cards in hand 90% of the game. Also, it has bumped my warrior match up at least 15%.

i playtested the deck… vs priest, warrior and hunter real big problem!
    50-50 vs zoolock
I don’t think it’s a good deck to low level… i hope that upper lvl can be a good deck

    • Nito

Zoo has to be your best MU imo

    • Mnescat
      November 26, 2016 at 4:54 pm

Running into same problem. Tips and skill help a lot, warrior (Armor based) and druid are tough.

But hunter…either I have skill issues or I can’t explain that 100% lose rate 🙁
89% win on rogue >50% vs mage and everything else.

Don’t be stingy with your burn. Throw a few forgotten torches/fireballs at his face early, so that when it gets later in the game, you are not dependent on Alexstrasza to close it out.

  47. Jeagolas
    May 23, 2016 at 7:46 am

I´m playin this list with the following modifications: +1 Antonidas instade of -1 Pyro +1 Cone of Cold instead of -1 Blizzard. I dont think that Antonidas is so slow.

  48. Tony

No need for 2 barriers, I use 2 acolytes instead, you need maximum card draw.

    • Evident

2 Forgotten Torch is there instead of Antonidas. This deck is new one for standard game.
