Murkspark Eel, and Primalfin Totem provide the strongest starts, allowing good early board presence and control, as well as zap if the opponent appears to have a tempo deck. If one of these is already present in your hand, Flametongue is a good secondary keep that opens up options for better trades or more face damage.

Lack of AOE led to increase in number of battlecry minions that directly affect the board. Grumble and an ancient brewmaster (for midgame stabilization) allow for reuse of battlecries as well as allowing you to play an additional minion for a Hagatha trigger. Since most shaman spells are 4 mana or below, Hemet allows for better draws and tempo in the later stages against aggro/tempo decks
