General Mulligans
Babbling book will be a 100% keep. Choose flamecaller, horserider, doomsayer for suspected aggro matchups. Choose acidic against weapon classes, or if only two drop just to get a body. Bloodmage and Sorcerer's are just good generic cards to keep if matchup is unknown; like agaisnt Priest for example.
Flamewaker if you have the coin, forgotton torch if suspecting a control matchup.
This is a modified version of Amaz’s Control Mage Deck.
A lot of early-game clear, situational mid-game cards, and powerful late-game cards.
Potential Card Swaps:
Babbling book is a swap for argent squire, though I could also see arguement for mana wyrm. Regardless, you want a solid 1 mana drop, just choose based on play-style. Eater of Secrets is not essential, it’s only here to counter the new and upcoming secret hunter. It still can be used rarely for against other mages, or yoggs that add secrets, but since the fall of secret paladin in standard this card can be swapped with no problem. I would suggest Amaz’s twilight drake, refreshment vendor, sen’jin shieldmasta, spellbreaker, or arcanosmith (underrated in my opinion). Unfortunately, the new Barnes wouldn’t strongly fit in this deck. I really wanted brann bronzebeard in here, but didn’t know what to remove (definitely consider adding it). Sigh, if you are out of BGH because of the nerf dust, then flame lance is okay (just no body) or if you worship the RNG gods then go servant of yogg-saron (warning RNG demons will haunt you).
Legendary Card Swaps:
Bloodmage for loot horder or novice engineer for the draw, crazed alchemist or jeweled scarab for the flexibility (more risky). Cult sorcerer, fallen hero, and medivh’s valet are the mage 2drops that would add strength to the deck too. Recommend Elise, but if you wanted to try Prince Malchezar in this deck then this would be the likely swap. No swap for Reno.. Sylvanas is hard to replace, but bloodhoof/legend 6 drop if you must. Just like sylv; Rag is quite needed in this deck too, Medivh the guardian/9 drop legendary/archmage/arcane giant are like doable but not going to match the threat of rag. YOGG is BAE, why would someone replace this guy? He is the get out jail free card that even pros need sometimes, but maybe nafarian can give you the game winning spells…for next turn…just craft yogg if you don’t have himm…because yogg is bae.
