Mulligans
General Mulligans
Babbling Book is the only real turn one play that this deck has, so it is a must keep. Flame Juggler is a good two drop against classes that play a 2/3 or a one health minion to start (Paladin hero power), and Shimmering Tempest is good because it gets you generating spells early (allowing you to use them more proactively).
Flamecannon is good at dealing with early aggression. I keep it against decks that I know will be running high health 1 or 2 drops.
Primordial Glyph and Unstable Portal can be good on turn 3 or 4 because you can use the generated card right away. I typically will keep these if I already have a turn one and turn two play.
I'll keep Piloted Shredder if I'm going second and have a turn 1 or 2 play.
I was inspired to create this list by Kripp’s random mage deck. I wanted to come up with something fun to play as I took my first steps into wild.
Turns out that it’s a pretty decent list, going 20-2 in higher ranks and beating a couple of zoolocks, a midrange jade shaman, and a purify priest in the process.
The deck runs a combination of random effects, random spell generation, and spell discover mechanics that make for some fun games (while also giving you the chance of getting what you need in some situations). Etherial Conjurer, Shimmering Tempest, Babbling Book, Primordial Glyph and Cabalist’s Tome help to make up for the lack of direct burn and board clears in the deck (sometimes), and Barnes can get some good value with some of his pulls. Spellslinger and Kabal Courier have the ability to draw from the game’s entire spell pool, which can make for some exciting (or not so much) moments. Flame Juggler is a decent two drop, and Piloted Shredder is an easy add to this deck due to its strength.
Yogg-Saron is pretty self explanatory at this point 🙂
Personally, I find Flame Cannon and Flamewaker to be two of the stronger cards in this deck. Flame Cannon is very effective at dealing with most four drops (or less) that get isolated on the board, and the ability to chain spells with dual Flamewakers has gotten me a number of wins. Your hero power is also great for cleaning up minions (but you already knew that if you were thinking of playing mage).
Overall, the deck plays a lot like Tempo Mage, but with a lot more variance. It relies on card generation to fuel itself (as opposed to draw), and the randomness can leave you feeling disappointed at times. It can curve nicely most of the time. Sylvanas was actually a recent addition. I originally ran two Cabalist Tomes, but found that it was too slow (and that your discover cards regularly generate either a second copy or enough value to not need it). I also tried Summoning Stone…that was fun, but it was more vulnerable to board removal since you can really only chain it with low cost spells. I settled on Sylvanas because she is a great pull from Barnes, and fits the curve. Faceless Summoner might be a consideration as well, since a 5/5 and a random 3 drop can sometimes be really good…but Sylvanas forces opponents into bad trades and sometimes has a similar effect with more variance.
Feel free to comment with thoughts. My goal with this deck is to continue having fun, but I’m looking to see how far this can carry me through the ranks. I’d love to see more of it out there on my climb!
