Deck Import

Hello, My name is Anomaly and I am a consistent Diamond-Legend Player in both the standard and wild formats. I have recently started making deck guides for the decks I use to climb to the coveted ranks.

Why Highlander Demon Hunter?

After the nerf to Twin Slice goes live, I think that the tempo lists will be dealt a huge blow due to the severe curve-centric synergy that card created with things like the Satyr Overseer, Battlefiend, and of course the Glaivebound Adept; which were all win-conditions or atleast power-turns for the deck. The change to Twin Slice actually warrants a slower playstyle, as the card now fills up the floating mana slots that a tempo list had in the mid/late game anyway. Cards that currently see little to no play like theFlamereaper become extremely potent as playing the weapon and one half of the slice gives the weapon a 6 damage aoe (Works likeSweeping Strikes in warrior). Your weapons will pack a much higher punch later on in the game now. Demon Hunter still has so many great standalone cards that the power level of the highlander list is insanely high. Having access to cards likeWrathscale Naga andNethrandamus for free makes this deck much easier to craft than the other highlander class counterparts.

Pros:

The deck has good cycle and decent curve for a highlander deck. The deck can often be mistaken for a tempo demon hunter list in the early game (nobody expects a highlander demon hunter these days)

The deck has a plethora of win-conditions/key cards in the Highlander cards (Zephrys the GreatandDragonqueen Alexstrasza ), TheNethrandamus (Literally one of the strongest class legendaries which is now part of the classic/Initiate set) can easily scale up over the course of the game with supporting cards likeUmberwing andCommand the Illidari,Metamorphosis is always a threat when the opponent is low on health however, this deck can just use the card to deal with midgame threats vs midrange/Aggro decks.

Very rewarding when you spend time to learn the combos and intricacies of the deck.

Cons:

The deck has a learning curve, your immediate results might not be as good as other decks that can be picked up and played by anyone. This deck requires some experience before you unlock its true potential (The reasons for this will be further explained later in the guide).

The deck does not really have the innate value to compete with the other popular highlander decks like the rogue or mage lists. So, at some point you have to become the aggressor and end the game.

Why certain cards are in this list:

1.Wrathscale Naga: This card is in the deck because of the synergy with the 2 rush spells (Coordinated StrikeandCommand the Illidari). The 3 damage per minion death can also go face which I think is really overpowered and can add some significant burst if you are using this with Command the Illidari with 8 mana, rushing all the 1/1s into anEvasive Drakonid for example you could theoretically get to do 18 damage face if all the procs go to the face. This can be seen as aBoom Bot type board clear as the 1/1 rushes can be seen as boom bots that deal 3 damage to a random enemy but the opponent does not have a turn to react to the board state.

Note: For 10 mana you can combine this combo with aFeast of Souls to draw 6 cards in the same turn! (Cult Master2.0)

2.Blade Dance: This card is similar toBlade Flurry for rogue but instead of attacking the whole board and destroying the weapon, this just dishes out the damage to 3 enemy minions. Can be a really good clear for a cheap cost of 2 mana. Since we have 4 weapons in the deck, usually when this card is used you have 1-4 attack already in play to ramp up theBlade Dance damage. The newTwin Slice also offers a 1 mana cost to jump the damage dealt by 2.

3.Cobalt Spellkin: Think about what 1 cost spells DH now has….only 3 and they are all AMAZING! Now you can get eitherMana Burn (A great control tool to deny key turns from your opponent like combining the card with yourDragonqueen Alexstrasza orNethrandamus turn against a priest so they cannotPlague of Death),Consume Magic (Just a 1 mana silence with likely cycle as these cards go to the right immediately), and the Newly addedTwin Slice (Heroic Strikecut in half, but ooooohhh soooo much better!!)

Hopefully after reading the guide thus far, you have an elementary understanding of what the deck is trying to do.

Mulligan Guide:

The general mulligans would be cards like the Ur’zul Horror,Umberwing,Sightless Watcher, andZephrys the Great. You should not be keeping combo cards likeWrathscale Naga and always mulligan away cards 6 cost or higher UNLESSSkull of Gul’dan is on the far left of your mulligan. Since the deck has a lot of mid to high cost cards, the Outcast mechanic is not as reliable. Hence we only run 2 cards that have the outcast mechanic.

 Card Replacements:

When it comes to card replacements, almost half the deck should already be available to you because it is a part of the initiate set. The highlander cards are obviously required for the deck. All the other legendaries can be swapped out:

Gameplay help/Tips:

Most of the time, the early turns 1-5 the opposing player has no idea that you are a highlander deck unlessZephrys the Great is played, take advantage of this with the decent to strong early game the deck has to fool the opponent into thinking you are just another one of those SmORC Demon Hunter players trust me, they are NOT PREPARED!!!!!

Nethrandamus is a very key card in the deck as in the current rotation almost all the 10 drops are VERY good (King Phaorisbeing the only real stinker) and a lot of the cards are resistant to one removal (Colossus of the Moon,Scrapyard Colossus). I would recommend stacking this upto 10 before playing it. As for whether you want to play this before or afterDragonqueen Alexstrasza  is your decision. Its quite matchup based, against something like priest that hasPlague of Death, you want to Alex first to bait that out as the 10 cost minions have reborn/Deathrattle effects whereas very few dragons have such effects. No other class has another monster card like this that creates multiple immediate threats on board, so make use of it!

If you are facing a slower deck, don’t have to become over aggressive in the early game, always conserve your resources as you lack the removal that other value decks have. Your board is a huge part of your removal, so don’t waste it for 5 face damage ????

Wrathscale Naga+Command the Illidari is a Win-Condition alone, don’t use the Naga unless you have to clear an imminent threat, or have some sort of lethal odds with the card in play.

 CHANGES/NOTES:

I have cut theCrimson Sigil Runner for anUr’zul Horror as in the early game the deathrattle 2/1 gives you a really good 1-2 turn curve as you can play the second half of the card and hero power turn 2.

I have replacedAltruis the Outcast withHarrison Jones as weapon removal is just huge against most meta decks and the deck can make good use of more card draw 🙂

If you have any questions about the deck, please do comment below and I will assist you to the best of my ability.

Enjoy the deck!
