As the deck’s name indicates, it consists of two playing core ideas: the Dragon package and the Freeze mechanic.

Dragons in the current meta have been quite frequent in various playable decks, even meta defining (ie. Hunter’s Dragon, Hunter’s Dragon/Beast, Druid Embiggen, etc). In Mage class, they come out to be very handy, with the likes of Malygos, Aspect Of Magic and Ysera, and even more powerful with Dragonqueen Alexstrasza and Kalecgos – rated as “value” cards. Freeze mechanic has been the class’ milestone since the very beginning of the game; in a sense it defines Mage. However, in the late meta it has not been so frequent – at least, not competitive enough against your opponent. Apparently, it has been seen in Mage Spell recently, but that’s it and with mediocre success. So why not trying to bring those two ideas together and create an interesting deck? Let’s have a look on some cards used in the deck.

    Jepetto Joybuzz

This card is a useful tool. Firstly, drawing 2 minions from your deck means you can access sooner the rest of your cards. Secondly, cheating out the mana cost of really big minions is an upside. Almost all minions do stuff when they are summoned, due to battlecry effects. Imagine a scenario while having 10 mana available and cast Jepetto; you create two “tokens” which can be played on the spot. Who would mind playing a Tortollan Pilgrim, a Dragoncaster or a Kalecgos for 1-mana? It is ideal to play when you are at 10 mana, a round that could possibly swing the game in your favor –and Jepetto can do that!

    Tortollan Pilgrim

The keyword discovery, if appropriately built in a deck with synergies, could be a game definer and Tortollan could discover THAT spell from your deck and do stuff. What is more important though is to keep avoiding spells backfiring at your hero. For that reason, discovering cards such as Frost Nova, Blizzard and Deep Freeze work against your enemy only –namely, the freeze mechanic cards. The same goes with spells that grant you an advantage, ie. Arcane Intellect and Flame Ward. Apparently, Tortollan comes out to be very handy!

Zephrys the Great and Dragonqueen Alexstrasza

What are these highlander cards doing in this deck? Actually, helping you to win matches!
It is acknowledged that Zephrys the Great can change the whole course of a game. If not the most powerful card currently in the game, definitely is one of the most meta-defining cards. A game changer and a game winner, you cannot go wrong with it!
Another massive card that provides great value is Dragonqueen Alexstrasza. Needless to say she can create a huge board by herself; a very valuable, tempo swinging card.
The main reason mentioning those two cards is not for saying how great they are –I am not reinventing the wheel here – but to justify their presence in a non-highlander deck. Usually, games last long (freezing your opponent and his/her board may stall things for quite a while) and the deck itself in the final turns might not have that umph to finish off your enemy. Thus, the use of these two is a must!

    Honorable Mentions

Astromancer Solarian and Ysera provide extra value, while Flame Ward is good against zoo and demon hunter decks. The Amazing Reno is an OP removal card (and you hope his rng skill will not backfire), while Dragoncaster can help you cheat out those big spells ie. Deep Freeze and Blizzard.

    Mulligan (General)

So if you are playing first you should always keep those cards in hand (at least 1 of them):

*Ray of Frost – It helps you to stabilize your board presence for the first couple of rounds; you can also trade for an enemy minion that stands on your way.
*Astromancer Solarian – Nice early minion, can work well with low mana burst spells because of SD +1. You can easily trade in with an enemy minion and shuffle in your deck its Prime version (which is pretty strong).
*Frost Nova – It can buy you time, so simple!

If you are playing second you can keep Arcane Intellect for drawing or Azure Explorer + Coin for board presence and an extra dragon card in hand.

Note – If you are playing against Demon Hunter or a Zoo type deck (ie. Warlock Zoo or Paladin Murlocs) keep Flame Ward.

    Maybeboard

There is a card that I am trying very hard to fit in and that’s Doomsayer. It is like butter on bread when you play Doomsayer + Frost Nova (or any freezing spells). However, I am not sure which cards to replace them with –any suggestions with a reason would be mostly appreciated.
