Stargazer Luna Card Review

No matter if this card sees play or not, I just love them exploring mechanics that wouldn’t be possible in a regular card game, like this one. In MTG, Yu-Gi-Oh etc. you can constantly change the order of cards in your hand, so a card like that would make no sense. But in Hearthstone, where the order is fixed? Exactly.

The effect is interesting, because with this card in play, you might be given a very difficult choice. For example, should you go for the best play this turn, which is NOT the right-most card, or go for a slightly weaker play, which will also draw you a card? Also, effects that generate extra cards (such as Fire Fly) also give you an extra choice. Do you use those to draw an extra card or go for something else? Or even deeper – do you keep such a card to combo with Luna or go off with them earlier? Yes, those choices will sometimes be simple and not really worth thinking about, but eventually players will be put into harder situations. And that’s great.

But, enough about the effect being cool, let’s focus on how useful this card is going to be. First of all, she doesn’t really fit into a slower deck, with a higher mana curve. On average, the card you just drew will cost quite a lot, usually preventing a chain of draws. Slow Mage decks, such as Big Spell Mage, aren’t really struggling for card draw anyway – with such a high mana curve, their hands tend to be rather clunky anyway.

It might seem like a great fit into an Elemental Mage – lots of cheap cards, generating extra cards in your hand etc. could give you a lot of extra draws. But Elemental Mage isn’t struggling with card draw either. If you play the deck, you will notice that running out of cards is actually pretty difficult. So that’s also a no.

In the end, the only deck that this kind of card might fit into is a faster, aggressive version of Mage. Namely, decks that already run Aluneth – decks that need a lot of cycle and can get through the cards quickly, because they’re cheap. And so, this is kind of card that might fit into a Burn/Tempo/Secret Mage (however it will be called after the expansion lands) or maybe even Murloc Mage. Average cost of a card in those decks is rather low, so if you’re in a mid or late game scenario, it might be possible to chain 2-3 top decks. Since your deck is mostly spells, it also synergizes really nicely with Sorcerer's Apprentice, making a lot of your topdecks cheaper. The stat-line, while not impressive, might be good enough to drop it on the curve too if you need to. It’s definitely better than playing a Turn 3 Arcane Intellect (in Tempo Mage, you always want minions in the early game, and skipping Turn 3 gives your opponent some opportunity to come back), and if it survives, it can give you even more value. Alternatively, if you get it in the mid game, you can pretty much guarantee a card draw at one point, and 3 mana 2/4 that draws a card is very good. Even more so if it will draw 2 or 3, which can happen from time to time.

The only situation in which this card is really bad in such a deck is a full topdeck mode. When you draw this as your topdeck and have nothing else in your hand. Then you either skip a turn completely or just drop it as a vanilla 2/4 that will most likely die before you get any value out of it.

I’ve seen people comparing this to Flamewaker, but I wouldn’t go that far. Tempo and damage is much more important in Tempo Mage than more cards, not to mention that Flamewaker is easier to use – you don’t always have to play the right-most card, you can pick any cheap spell from your hand and use it. It doesn’t mean that Luna is bad, it’s just a completely different type of card.

I feel like it might be replacing a single Arcane Intellect in Tempo Mage. And possibly something in Murloc Mage, although Murloc Mage already has some powerful card draw with Book of Specters and it cares even more about the tempo, so I’m not sure. Still, it’s a solid card, but I don’t believe that it will be any kind of metabreaker.

P.S. It might be significantly better if they feature some cheap generated cards that will let you utilize this effect more consistently. Something like a better version of Flame Geyser would go a long way to make this card better.

    In fact, any cards that add stuff to your hand profit double.
    This is basically Sonya Shadowdancer in Mage, lol

    Oddly, the review is wrong about MTG: Future sight and Magus of the future lets you play the top card of your deck. This seems to be basically the same thing – except that they basically also draws you a card at once effectively.

    imaging having this with a primordial glyph as rightmost card, discovering another primrodial glyph with it, and another and another.. for eternal card draw XD

      Wouldn’t work, because you draw a card after generating the spell. If you got another primordial glyph, it wouldn’t be your right most Card anymore.

    I’m not sure why but I totally originally thought that it meant a battlecry whenever you play the card that was the right most in hand when it was played you’d draw a card in which I thought was on the bad side for a legendary effect. After rereading it I don’t know how people can think it’s less than at very least an above average legendary. It has alright stats for a 3 drop (not amazing by any means, but it’s pretty average), it’s effect ISNT as great as others suggest as it’s very restricted based on what you draw into, but in a dedicated low cost deck that wants to draw into a win condition, this card is insane.

    IMHO, in most games you will maybe draw one or two cards with this minion, and your opponent will do whatever it takes to kill it. Similar to Arugal… people will do anything to silence or kill this minions, its a interesting mechanic, its like your opponent is forced to kill or silence. Ive used Arugal a few times just to protect a important minion I was going to play next turn…

      I used Arugal the same way, great point. It’s a drop where at worst it burns opponents removal and at best you get added value. This won’t stick all game but do you need it to? Foot on the gas!

    Same cost and stat-line as Flamewaker but gives draw rather than damage… I can see this in a tempo deck with Mirror Image to hide behind, much like Flamewaker used to. However, Flamewaker adds tempo whereas Luna stops you running out of steam quite so quickly.

    I’d say Flamewaker is overall more powerful in a tempo deck, especially since you can have 2… but it is Wild only.

    If I pack Luna I might give her a shot in my Wild Mech Mage deck though – at the very least she’s a high-priority kill when dropped on T3, again like Flamewaker, but also Brann – who’s also 2/4. Though it could muck up the Blastmage synergy.

        Oh, I agree, I can see the potential with her and you really only need to draw a couple of cards to have great value… but, the cards you draw are going to need to be cheap – or you need to find a way to get her to stick, which is why I suggested T4 -> Luna into Mirror Image .

        However, the “right-most” condition does limit her utility. If you’ve got her in your hand on T3 but you’ve just drawn a Fireball… do you risk playing her? How greedy do you want to be with this card? Like Brann, she is going to be a must-kill target, so don’t expect her to stick around long.

        Yes, she’ll work in aggro decks nicely – but she’s in competition with Aluneth in those decks. You could use both but that might be overkill.

    I like it. Sort of Divine Favor for Mage. Even if it’s not very tempo-ish when drawn early, it’s draw power will make up for it. I mean … Divine Favor is used in Aggro Paladin, right?

    That said, I’m not sure if Aluneth Mage will want to use it. And control decks? They want cards, but have very specific tools, so playing the rightmost card might be a bad thing most of the time. A deck like Murloc Mage? For sure!

    Only ‘bad’ thing I see right now is that this card promotes a much-hated archetype – Face Aggro / Burn with high card redundancy.

    This card could possibly replace aluneth in a lot of the decks that play it, but its more likely it will just easily slot into any deck that wants to run aluneth. Seems to play a similar role to aluneth in that it’s clearly designed to allow you to play a lot of cheap cards quickly.

        1) no, if u have just 3 mana you can’t play the right most card in your hand, unless it costs 0
        2) only in something like miracle mage with a lot of cheap spells,
        3) in the first turns is pure rng, the right card has 50% chance to be unplayable or suboptimal (imagine a polymorph without a target, a firebolt when u wanna devolop the board, etc)

          I was thinking about a mage deck that could utilise this card better not a control mage but more like a mage deck with cheap burn spells and cheap snowball minions like mana wyrm and sorceress apprentice

            Tempo mage is cancer but it really doesn’t need more draw. 1 or 2 arcane intellect + aluneth are more than enough. IDK if luna can take the place of AI, the latter seems more consistent to me.

      You can play this on turn 10 to draw multiple cards. Nobody said this card has to be played on curve and on turn 3.
      I think of it like Brann, but with more restrictions.

      Probably not. In all likelihood, its a promotional account given how the character depicted on the card was featured in it’s reveal animation.

      It’s would probably be plenty playable right now in at least Tempo and Murloc mage since both play a ton of cheap cards. In such a deck, it’s more than possible for one to turn a top deck of Luna into a fairly formidable string of plays in the late game be it this into a bunch of Murlocs or this into a lethal number of burn spells.
      If you play this the turn you draw it, it will at least be a 3 mana gnomish engineer.

          Yes. I meant that card.
          And logically, when you draw her, she’ll be the rightmost card in your hand and its texts says “after” and not “whenever.” This does two things to how the card operates: it’ll replace itself if it is the rightmost card in hand and it draws the card after cards like Firefly add another card to your hand.

            Would be cool if she’d replace herself, but I doubt it. Too me, it feels more logical that she already has to be on the board the moment you play the rightmost spell.

    Combo=Luna+two witchwood pipers – 1,2 and 3 cost minions+1,2,3 cost spells
    Well,you starts with 10% chance to draw one of the girls and you will probly have atleast one of them in the rigth time
    You will use Luna with your cheap cards you didnt use to draw so many cards and…try to find burst cards,maybe fireballs and PYROBLAST
    Well,the rest of the deck are made of the best minions you have,maybe elementals or mechs,i dont know yet
    Everygame in turn 9 you make sure to have 18 cards or less in your deck,wath matters is you either have enough burst damage,or can draw it with Luna,so aniway you will always guarantee your opponent “starts” with 20 hp everygame,cuz anyway you will can cause 10 damage in the end

    I think is a combo deck card, you may use this, simulacrum, sorcerer’s apprentice and starts looking like an alternative exodia mage. Basically you can just play any spell you draw that cost 4 or less for free, and your hand keeps refilling.
    I don’t know if there is enough material in standart for this, but may worth the try.

    It’s a 3mana cheaper auctioneer, except the effect is even stronger because it doesn’t require spells.

    It’s also better than brann: both are 3mana 2/4 with an upside that triggers when you play cards. The upsides (doubling a battlecry / drawing 1 card) have similar values. But while you do not always have battlecry cards, you always have a right most card.

    This is a great mechanic. Its card draw/cycle but not too op due to the prerequisite. This might become a staple for tempo mages. Really great card for late game!

    Why are people here saying it’s bad? This is a good, solid card. It’s a 3 mana 2/4, which is a solid stat line for 3 drops. Not OP, not UP, just solid. The effect is also solid. You can profit off of top decks and cards that came off random things, in which Mage works very well with. This, I think, will be ran in Elemental Mage, Mech Mage because of Spare Parts (should Mech Mage exist) and possibly Tempo Mage or Burn Mage if it exists. Not OP, not Up.

    It’s odd to think Mage is quickly becoming one of the best classes to generate card advantage in with Aluneth, Archmage Arugal, Book of Specters, this and a handful or so other cards.
    Whether played early or later on, this can easily be an arcane intellect that comes with a 2/4 in more aggressive mage decks. That will hardly be something that can be scoffed at.
    The right situation may need to be had to gain the most value out of this card, but Tempo Mage plays enough cheap cards that playing this on six could easily turn over three cards.

    This is very much the sort of card draw a Tempo deck should get for this cost: easy to get but has to be done right.

      Since it doesn’t mandate spells – you could use it with Mechwarper rather than Apprentice in Wild; couple of Clockwork Gnomes and you’re laughing.

      Definitely not. Stats and mana cost alone make it much better than LOTS of the useless high cost Legendary. And you sometimes get to draw a card? Cool!

      Definitely not a staple, auto-include Legendary, but not even close to the worst Legendary in the game. It looks alright, actually.

        I think it’s bad:
        – Stats are not good (not poor, but below average)
        – No immediate impact on board
        – Effect is situational and requires more mana so can’t enjoy it on curve.
        – Effect is not very powerful, mage has enough draw power right now.

        The good things:
        – Need to be removed from board (but not urgently..)
        – can do some nice combos later on game with sufficient mana (again – very situational)

          1. 3 mana 2/4 that very easily draws a card is beyond playable. If you play it the turn you draw it, it is a 3 mana Gnomish Engineer.
          2. It’s a 3 cost minion. Immediately doing something on the board isn’t required like it is for higher cost minions.
          3. Neither can Auctioneer in most situations.
          4. There’s hardly a thing as too much draw and this is really the only minion based form of draw mage with have, making it a good choice for Murloc mage

      What about Tempo Mage? They play a ton of cheap spells eventually one of them will end up on the right. In its worse case, it’s a gnomish engineer with an arcane missile, breath of sindragosa, or mana wyrm attached.

      in any burn deck because drawing burn is the win condition
      in any deck that runs jaina because drawing jaina is the win condition
      so that’s every mage deck, except murloc mage
      for murloc mage it’s questionable
      but still, probably good enough
      it’s just busted

      When this minion is on the board, and you play the card on the right side of your hand (so usually your top deck), you draw a card. Then, that new card is going to be on the right side of your hand again, so when you play it, you draw another one.

      Is there anything else you don’t understand?

          Not really, though. When you play Fire Fly, it will add the token to your hand and then, AFTER the card resolves, you draw a card. So the new card will be right-most, not the Flame Elemental.

          If the Luna said “Whenever” instead of “After”, it would proc before the card resolves, and it would work just like you think.

          I mean, adding a card draw to a Fire Fly is still a great thing, just saying that you won’t draw one with the Flame Elemental too 🙂
