Black Cat Card Review

First things first – I wrote my first part of reviews just a few days ago and I was already wrong! For some reason, I assumed that the Odd/Even effects will be present only on those two Legendaries, but it seems like we’ll be getting some support cards. However, to quote the game designer Mike Donais, not every class will get those and mostly the “less obvious” combinations are going to get more synergies. For example – this one! For Mage, going for the Odd cards only and Baku the Mooneater seems weird. But let’s first take look at the card itself.

3/3 for 3 with card draw and Spell Damage… well… It’s a miniature Azure Drake. However, given that it costs 2 mana less, effect is scaled 1:1 and the only difference is -1/-1 in stats (well, and a Beast tag instead of Dragon, but it’s mostly irrelevant in Mage) – the card turns out to be way more powerful than Azure Drake, which was already a great pick in Mage. Especially the Spell Damage part, which was only a nice addition on the Azure Drake, seems to be one of the main selling points of this card. It’s much easier to combo 3 mana spell damage minion than a 5 mana spell damage minion. For example, you CAN play this on Turn 10 with Flamestrike to deal 5 damage. It’s a great card throughout the entire game – good thing to drop on the curve and scales very well into the late game.

I believe that it’s the most powerful of all the odd/even synergy cards revealed, and yet I also think that it won’t see any play. With out current knowledge, I don’t believe that Odd Mage will be a thing, unless the class gets a few powerful Odd-cost spells right away.

Because, you see, what’s the point of having Spell Damage minion when you pretty much can’t play any good spells? Or well, you can’t play other strong cards too? Here is just a quick list of things you’d need to drop from your deck: FrostboltDoomsayerArcanologistSorcerer's Apprentice, Primordial Glyph, FireballPolymorphBlizzardMeteor. At the same time, some of the odd-cost spells like Volcanic Potion or Firelands Portal, that you might use to fill the curve, are rotating out. Secrets can also be played, but without Arcanologist, their value gets down significantly.

I don’t believe a Control Mage would be able to sacrifice so many cards just to get this mini-Azure Drake and upgraded Hero Power. At the same time, I don’t believe that a messed mana curve and lack of Frostbolt, Fireball etc. is worth the sacrifice for a faster, more Tempo-oriented Mage deck. Not to mention Aluneth, which is MVP in all of the fast Mage lists.

So my only guess is that, in case they print some more big, odd-cost spells, a Big Spell Mage might actually want to play it. Dragon's Fury is odd, Arcane Tyrant, Dragoncaller Alanna and Frost Lich Jaina are odd, but the only big odd spell left is Flamestrike. Literally. Firelands Portal and Greater Arcane Missiles are rotating out, and all other spells are even. Baku actually makes sense in Big Spell Mage. The biggest challenge is getting through the early game, and a 2 damage Hero Power that can hit anything as well as this Black Cat might actually help. Even though the card won’t affect the Hero Power from Frost Lich Jaina, that’s not a big deal – by the time you play her, it should have already done its job.

To sum things up, I believe that the card is amazing, even broken, but it’s still not worth the sacrifice in Mage unless the upcoming Mage spells will be strong AND odd-costed. Even then I’m not sure if it won’t be better to just play it with Blizzard, Meteor etc.

Card rating: 4/10, unless they print some really powerful odd-cost spells

Good card. 3/3 spellpower beast already makes it playable outside constructed.

It could work on odd decks is that legendary that makes your hero power better on odd decks meaning your hero power could kind of replace frost bolt or medivhs valet removal effects.

I can see also see it in some decks with a 1-2 even cards just because 3/3 with spellpower isn’t completely bad.

    5/5

Best of the 4 cards revealed. Even without the card draw its an okay 3 drop and in a Baku deck its a better azure drake which was a great card in mage. We probably need a couple more good odd cost cards to make the deck competitive but I have a feeling this year’s expansions will provide them

the only problem is that a card like this seems like a tempo mage card and mage has no odd burn cards, and a control mage doesn’t have firelands, blizzard, and doomsayer, I just don’t think that this card will be good in the deck with only odds and now its a soot sprayer

Not to mention, Firelands is rotating out. Along with a couple of their other odd cards worth rotating, like greater missiles. This xpac will need some heavy cards to come in to make it worth it. Otherwise you’re going to have to rely on RNG mage, like tarot cards, to do the job for you.

        Which is no bueno.

Personally, I think it’s a decent card just with the spell power. I feel like it’s going to be another cthun worshipper, and get ran for the dmg increase just to run.

Hmmm… Mage without Frost Bolt, Fireball, Polymorph, Meteor, Blizzard or Doomsayer?

Volcanic Potion, Firelands Portal and Greater Arcane Missiles (which you might only use because of the “odds” restriction) all rotate out.

However… you do keep all the Secrets, Mana Wyrm, Arcane Artificer, Dragon’s Fury and Flamestrike … and Deck of Wonders (dubious utility), Dragoncaller Alanna and Frost Lich Jaina.

… and you’re probably going to throw in Baku if you’re building around the “odds” restriction anyway, so your Hero Power will deal 2 damage (until you DK, if you include her).

There might be something workable there…

Absolutely broken power level but it comes down to how strong the archetype will be

It`s like Soot Spewer, if you don`t trigger that odd-thingy.

I think it wont see much play because most of mages board removal and burn cards are even cost.

That’s a little stupid to say, considering they said it would work with Ele Mage, not burn .They could print some badass Elementals this expansion, and think about it. Frost Lich, Servant of Kalimos, Baron Geddon, Tar Creeper, Blazecaller, are all odd cost. This can really work here. And besides, there are still odd cost spells. Secret Elemental Mage, anyone?

There are a few things to consider for this card. First of all, a 3/3 for 3 that draws a card is fantastic. Next is that secrets still work with this card which is a plus and i recall at least one that deals damage. Finally, You can still choose to run those even cost spells if you want to take advantage of the spell damage and running only a couple of copies can still draw you a card if you draw them early. Ultimately I see this being in more of a control style deck.

If running and odd-cost only Mage deck, you have 4 spells available to you that benefit from Spell Power.

Arcane Missiles, Breath of Sindragosa, Explosive Runes, and Flamestrike.

I imagine they will be adding some new odd-cost spells for Mage in this set though, so I’ll reserve my judgement for when the whole set is revealed.

Dragon’s fury is also odd and benefits from spell power. I have personal experience with this as I have played plenty of big spell mage.

Why is this not a neutral? It would have fit perfectly for my Face Hunter! I play it on Turn 8, top-deck a Kill Command and Hero Power to do 9 damage total and close the game. Plus the Beast tag is perfect. Whyyyy does it have to be a Mage card? 4/5, would have been 5/5 if it were neutral.

    • D00mnoodle
      March 15, 2018 at 12:30 pm

Because hunter may never get strong card draw, if this were a hunter card it would make the class toptier.

        March 15, 2018 at 3:15 pm

…and you can’t fish for it with DK as that’s a 6-drop card. Drat!

        March 16, 2018 at 3:48 am

Hunter has probably one of the most powerful and one-sided Hero Powers, so Blizzard has been giving him bad class cards for a long time, especially legendaries. Hunter can always abuse good neutrals, like we’ve seen with Undertaker. Mean Streets of Gadgetzan was an all-time low quality cards for Hunter. Blizzard has finally managed to push a new archetype for Hunter with Spell Hunter, but now that Barnes rotates out it’s probably not going to cut it for ladder without more support. I believe Face or Midrange Hunter should always be at least a T2 deck, but yeah, I understand that giving hunter a good card draw could potentially break it. Still sad for all the crappy cards he gets so often.

Stop… we don’t need that in Face Hunter…

It’s a cat and we’re losing Tabbycat in standard, OF COURSE we need it in Hunter! 🙂 Besides, odd Mage is very unlikely to work, so we’re not going to see this cat too much. Don’t you miss all those Face Hunters plaguing the ladder? 😉

I would’t be so sure about this card. It means no fireball, no frostbolt…

    • D00mnoodle
      March 15, 2018 at 12:33 pm

My thoughts exactly, this card gives you spell damage but for what spells? what do you have left? arcane misilles? bad. Flamestrike? does the job with 4 damage most of the time, but this still combos great on turn 10. However the card is still insanly strong 4/5

      • LeonardoFRei
        March 15, 2018 at 12:42 pm

This is a 3 mana 3/3 that draws you a card for free, spell damage is just a bônus

And with stuff like Firelands Portal rotating out, Im sure they’ll add some odd numbered spells

    • Mavis
      March 16, 2018 at 1:11 am

it always has the spell damage but the card draw is only when you play only odd cards. 🙂 so you can play fireball , frostbolt,…

    If not, 3/5.

Ooo more of the restrictive cards

I really like these cards already, love catering my decks around restrictions, can’t wait to see what else is in store for us.

As for the card itself, 3/3/3 draw a card with a beast tag and Spell dmg +1 seems preeeetty good

    AZURE CAT?

    • repHAWAII
      March 15, 2018 at 12:52 pm

No way , Azure Drake is FAR better than Black Cat .

      Drake
      4/4
      Spell dmg
      Draw
      Dragon
      Neutral

      Cat
      3/3
      Spell dmg
      Draw (Conditional)
      Beast
      Mage

Drake being a NEUTRAL DRAGON on top of spelldmg and draw made the card really strong

what ? 2 more mana for +1 +1, cat is a lot better if you forget the odd cost. there is no dragon mage
