Augmented Elekk Card Review

Very interesting card. Since there are lots of cards that shuffle extra cards into your (or your opponent’s) deck, there are many, many applications, and I think that theory won’t do them justice. Realistically, this will need to be tested to see whether it’s worth it or not. Because on the one hand, shuffling more cards is usually a good thing. But at the same time, you need to spend extra 3 mana to do it – the 3/4 body is nice, but you still add another card to the “combo”. Still, I will go through some of the potential combos you can pull off in Standard and talk about them a bit.

Rogue is probably the best class for this card. Starting with Fal'dorei Strider, it seems like Elekk was made exactly for that card. They curve into each other, and Strider shuffling 6 spiders is a huge deal. Not only it makes it much more likely to pull out one or two quickly, but it increases the total value of the card. Another obvious candidate is Academic Espionage – shuffling TWENTY 1 mana cards into your deck might seem like an overkill, but it will make drawing those discounted cards much more consistent. You can also use it with Lab Recruiter to shuffle even more copies of a given card (6 instead of 3), which might make sense in let’s say the Pogo-Hopper deck.

Other than Rogue, Warrior and Priest can use it in their respective “fatigue” decks. Warrior can combo it with Dead Man's Hand, but it seems a bit pointless – you go infinite with two copies anyway, so shuffling more cards at once doesn’t make a big difference. Dead Man’s Hand deck usually runs Direhorn Hatchling too, and playing Elekk right before the Deathrattle happens might be solid sometimes, an extra 6/9 in your deck. Similarly, Priest could use it with Archbishop Benedictus, but that card is already bad in most of the matchups, shuffling twice as much cards would make you even more fatigue-resistant, but is that really necessary?

You can also drop it with The Darkness to shuffle 6 Candles instead of 3, to make reviving it way more consistent. I doubt that’s enough to make the card playable, since it’s a 2 cards combo you need to hold off until at least Turn 7, but yeah.

Overall, you CAN do some stuff with this card. 3 mana 3/4 body also means that in matchups you don’t need it, dropping it on curve is a solid option. Your opponent might be afraid that you will use that effect anyway, so it has a sort of quasi-Taunt. It will most likely have more applications in Wild (such as meme decks with Iron Juggernaut), but I’m not playing the other format enough to really say whether it will be good or not. In Standard, however, it might not see play immediately, but it’s a card with high potential for some very specific combos. It’s not busted by any means, though, since it increases the mana cost of those combos by 3 and means that you need to draw this card first too.

Card rating: 7/10

Riiiiiiiight – now to theorycraft a Rogue Star Aligner deck… where I end up with the remains of my deck holding nothing but copies of Star Aligner.

    It’ll never work but hey.

This card is exactly what I want from the future expansions.

Relevant statted minion that don’t just win you the game rather add more stuff.

I dont want to see uninteractive OTK decks, I want to see balance between Minions and Spells. Decks like Jaina Mage are fine but Quest Mage, Malygos Druid, MIndblast priest are just braindead. Remove minions, draw cards, hope for a good matchup.

Great value, great statline, but it needs very specific decks to work around it – whether or not the new academic espionage and faldorei are enough to include this in mirace is the real question. Ultimately, I doubt it is consistent enough to run in miracle, but a new card or two can change it.

Other than that, it will be great to use with Shaw in monster hunt, with Dire Frenzy on Hyenas 😀

It’s a pretty played out concept, but yet again I’m imagining an iron juggernaut combo in wild. You have Iron Juggernaut, Augmented Elekk, and Bran Bronze Beard. You could play emperor thaurissan reducing at least two of the cards. You play the three of them to shuffle 4 bombs into your opponents deck. Easy 40 damage.

Hell you could throw in a dead man’s hand to increase that amount. Also I think with the new balance changes cards shuffled into your deck keep the thaurissan reduction, so could allow for you to pull off the full combo again and again. Can’t confirm that part tho :\

inb4 the animation stops players from taking any of their turn (doubt it, but it would be enraging)
On a more serious note, it’s not necessarily game changing when played with most combos, but very useful. Comparable to how gnomeferatu was really good when hitting the right cards, this can be good with crazy combos, but combos that really mattered much only (For instance, Academic Espionage asap, or faldorei strider)

i don’t know why is this not a hunter only card. I see its some sort of anti rogue tech. So yeah rogues tested to be OP what a shocker :D. Not like you won’t be able to play around this with rogue. So the only one else who would run this should be hunter with dire frenzy. I don’t think rogue should have acces to this card. You can use it to shuffle up to 40 cards in your deck that cost 1. So 70 cards deck for rogue. Is it fair ? I mean we saw how insanely strong renounce darkness can be even without the yshara’j combo. So now insted of discount with 1 you get crazy discount cards. I can see The priest legendary making a good addition to this deck so auto win againts priests again. Its not that priest is strong anyway.

This card excites me for rogue. Just built a deck list with this, faldorei strider, pogo, kingsbane, lab recruiter and academic espionage. Because why the hell not? So much shuffle! It may be not be very competitive, but I bet I’ll have some bonkers games with it 🙂

  20. Helioshadow
    July 28, 2018 at 1:35 pm

Mill yourself to Fatigue. Somehow get Rag to stick on the board (possibly with Shadowcaster combo or Kobold Illusionist shenanigans). Doomsayer + Augmented Elekk > Lab Recruiter/Gang Up. Next turn Dollmaster > Prep > Sprint. 32 damage to face. That ought to be fun x3

Academic Espionage in Burgle Miracle should be fun with this too. Slap in a couple Fal’dorei Striders and maybe a Darkness for absolute memeage and it’ll be a wild ride :3

And Mill Rogue can literally never Fatigue itself. Between Lab Recruiter, Gang Up, plus this card, you’re definitely going to be able to Fatigue the opponent to death before you even reach Fatigue (besides the occasional Dead Man’s Hand Warrior and Mill Rogue mirror).

Love this card. Doesn’t matter if it’s good or not; I’ll be experimenting a ton with this.

    • minti
      July 28, 2018 at 2:00 pm

i don’t think you need kingsbane in this deck at all. You need tons of weapon buffs to make this work. Although you don;t really realize how much shuffle 10 extra cards in your deck is :D. Let alone 20.
Ofcourse you are forgetting tess graymane for some crazy after effects there :D. IF you are lucky enough to draw her with few shadow steps.
While in wild you can put in the eterial peddlers and prince malchezar. But the problem with this is that mill rogue runs kingsbane so you need to fight the 15 atack weapon by turn 10. And i don’t think the deck wil lbe that much consistent.

      • Helioshadow
        July 28, 2018 at 3:22 pm

I meant pure Mill Rogue with fatigue as a win-con, causing those 10+ extra Coldlights to actually matter.

And if you face Kingsbane, you just hope they misplay and you mill the weapon. Or run an Ooze and screw them over with mill.

Curving this into Academic Espionage for Rogue seems like a lot of fun even if it doesn’t turn out to be great. Drawing a bunch of random cards as you’re getting pressured by Baku Paladin doesn’t seem wise. Still going to give it a try though.

  27. GlosuuLang
    July 28, 2018 at 12:59 pm

I like it! It can be both a nice 3-drop if needed or a powerful value tool in the end game. If a deck tries to win via Fatigue, they will probably consider this guy. Just saying it comboes with 7-mana Archbishop Benedictus, lol! 3/5 stars.

2xaugmented elekk and arcybishop? Hi have 150 card in my deck ???

  30. Soup And Salad
    July 28, 2018 at 12:52 pm

Augmented Elekk is incredibly specific. It’s another vanilla 3/4 with some interesting, if niche, text, so it’s not all bad.

There are applications for such an effect, Dead Man’s Hand (Which is no longer that viable without Coldlight Oracle) Pogo-Hopper, Kingsbane, and the handful of other cards that copy cards, but playing a card like this in those sorts of decks is not necessary and the space taken up by a card like this is better spent on playing control tools, healing, or draw cards. Dire Frenzy could also be useful with this, but outside of a class that can actually draw a few cards now and again, this card would hardly be worth it.

Looking at it realistically for the Poggo-Hopper Rogue deck that will see experimentation upon the set’s release, you have to wait until turn seven to guarantee the combo with Poggo-Hopper and Lab Recruiter. Playing this in Kingsbane Rogue would also be pointless since Valeera the Hollow might as well come with a second copy of Kingsbane as is and you’d be playing the Hero card anyway.

If anything, this would make Academic Espionage better since Elekk would shuffle a second copy of everything it adds to your deck and the two cards would easily curve into each other. However, you’re playing a functionally vanilla 3/4 into a turn four that consists of doing nothing to affect the board to hopefully draw a bunch of useful discounted cards.

The most interesting application of the card would probably be in Wild with the Weasel Tunneler deck that’s been floating around just as a way to get even more 1/1s shuffled into the opponent’s deck. I would be more willing to believe the hype already around the card if it had a stickier statline that a 3/4.

          July 28, 2018 at 1:31 pm

You are looking at how not to make it work, instead of how to make it work.

It’s pretty clear when you don’t bring out the obvious, possible best card, Fal’dorei Strider.

          • Soup And Salad
            July 28, 2018 at 2:42 pm

I don’t think the synergy with Fal’dorei Strider would make it worth playing in a Miracle Rogue unless that incorporates a lot of the card copying effects shown thus far. Granted, I did forget about that card, so thank you for reminding me.
If of the shuffling effects are played in the same deck, then this would be in it too, but the deck would need to be able to win without it, and I’m not really seeing it, especially if the metagame speeds up.

            July 31, 2018 at 10:01 am

Oh. Yes. Saying a card with a very narrow effect would only be potentially good in very narrow and particular circumstances (Either curving into Strider or in a deck built around Pogo-hopper) and calling out the overblown hype around the card for it is me failing to understand the card.

      • Soup And Salad
        July 28, 2018 at 12:54 pm

This card would not make Quest Hunter viable. Playing this on turn three would either delay the quest’s completion until at least turn six or you’d have to wait until turn eight to play this and the queen at the same time.

  32. AnUn
    July 28, 2018 at 12:43 pm

3 Mana 3/4 with Beast Tag is already playable. On top an effect that can fit to a decks strategy. I like how many cards in this set are playable so far!

  33. Spooninja
    July 28, 2018 at 12:42 pm

This card is actually never going to see play in a dead mans hand warrior (being someone who avidly plays the deck) simply because shuffling two dead mans hand back into the deck and then drawing both from the deck will cause your hand to slowly fill up with dead mans hand. It’s not terrible but playing it in dead mans hand warrior just isn’t an option to truly go infinite and have the best cards possible being recycled through the deck. 3/5 for potential though in decks like priest and cards like Elise the trailblazer and baleful banker

  34. HadNoIdeas

      • Soup And Salad
        July 28, 2018 at 12:59 pm

By the time you could do that, you’re probably losing and hardly affecting the board through your combo. If you then followed up in turns ten and eleven with Vanishes, you could live to see a massive Pogo-Hopper, but as you build that, your opponent probably amassed enough damage for game.

        • Lord Tyrone
          July 28, 2018 at 1:43 pm

        • Thomas O'Looney
          July 29, 2018 at 2:01 am

Tempo can be regained or kept via overstated pogo hopper eg take 2 mana out and say it’s third pogo this game… That’s a star line of 3/2 3/2 3/4 and 5/5 for the 11/ mana not really losing tempo imo

          • Soup And Salad
            July 29, 2018 at 6:33 am

Chances are that it won’t be unless you started with a hand consisting of two Pogo Hoppers and two shadow steps. Pogo-Hopper Rogue would not be a tempo deck but Jades reincarnate and outside of the aforementioned Shadow Step there is no to play multiple copies of Hopper without getting coining the first hopper, following it up with Lab Recruiter, and getting lucky on the next couple draws.

And you would be likely be behind on tempo unless you played a Vanish the turn before hand. Even then, your opponent will be allowed to rebuild their board and attack before you can do the same. Additionally, playing 14/13 worth of stats that neither adds cards to hand nor can attack immediately as a turn nine play could defiantly be stronger. You would be setting up to win in the long run, but Value oriented Rogue decks have struggled since the rotation of Antique Healbot and Sludge Belcher.

Espionage is even so that will never happen. More like a buff to Genn Rogue, which exists.

You missed my point. I want to spell it out for you so you realize you made a simple mistake. If you play elek, espionage, then draw two random bad cards that cost one mana, while your OPPONENT is playing baku rogue, or baku paladin, or any aggro deck, you’re setting yourself up to be dead. It was easy to realize that’s what I meant but you didn’t.
