Mulligans

Aggro Mulligans

Generally you will do pretty good aggainst aggros due to your big AOE and heals.

You can't be sparing cards thou, you need to ignore value and lightning bolt any high damage target, despite having a good lightning storm next turn or not. Tempo is key!

Since this kind of decks escalate really quickly you need to maintaint the maximum health possible until your drops outrun theirs. With this, I add a quick note, Healing Wave can also be searched in mulligans in case you already have two of the above drops.

Midrange Mulligans

Midrange is a fine match-up that can turn out for both sides.

I think that if the person playing this deck realizes he is going aggainst midrange he has a higher chance of winning.

This because midrange decks in standard don't seem to have great burst, so you can play on outvaluing the enemy since you can easily wait for a great opportunity to use your AOEs, massivly heal and then recover from overload from Eternal Sentinal.

Control Mulligans

This IMO is the hardest match-up for this deck.

This because usually you don't have enough boost to kill the opponent if you didn't make an early impression.

The key here is to keep up constant pressure with creatures while not overextending and, of course, try to get the maximum value out of your cards, Specially elemental destruction and Saron.

Yogg-Saron, Hope's End brought great hype pre-release and certainly corresponded to its expectations. Unfortunatly, most of the decks I’ve seen are mage types.

That’s when I thought of shaman!!

Another great AOE cleaning class with Elemental Destruction and Lightning Storm that can also spam spells and heal a bunch with its new Legendary Hallazeal the AscendedAnother really talked Legendary that has not seen much play.

I wanted to bring all this to use and after a whole week of test playing I think I found a great result to play with them competitivly.

Saron Control Shaman (Standard) Mulligan Guide and Strategy

Aggainst Aggro:

  • Generally you will do pretty good aggainst aggros due to your big AOE and heals.
  • You can’t be sparing cards thou, you need to ignore value and lightning bolt any high damage target, despite having a good lightning storm next turn or not. Tempo is key!
  • Since this kind of decks escalate really quickly you need to maintaint the maximum health possible until your drops outrun theirs. With this, I add a quick note, Healing Wave can also be searched in mulligans in case you already have two of the above drops.

Aggainst Control:

  • IMO this is the hardest match-up for this deck.
This because usually you don’t have enough boost to kill the opponent if you didn’t make an early impression.
  • The key here is to keep up constant pressure with creatures while not overextending and, of course, try to get the maximum value out of your cards, Specially elemental destruction and Saron.

Aggainst Midrange:

  • Midrange is a fine match-up that can turn out for both sides.
  • I think that if the person playing this deck realizes he is going aggainst midrange he has a higher chance of winning.
  • This because midrange decks in standard don’t seem to have great burst, so you can play on outvaluing the enemy since you can easily wait for a great opportunity to use your AOEs, massivly heal and then recover from overload with Eternal Sentinel.

Saron Control Shaman (Standard) Play Strategy

Usually you want to start slow and never have more than 2 drops on board. You want the opponent to overextend so you can bring on great board clears with huge damage and low cost. Making it possible to make a sort of counter-attack!

I would advice getting an HS tracker so you can always know the count of spells for Yogg-Saron, Hope's End.

Remember you can easily get more than 30 HP with Hallazeal the Ascended and Elemental Destruction combined.

The early drops in this deck are just so you have a good way to win vs aggro type decks.

Ancestral Knowledge and Azure Drake are more than enough to keep up your game value and search for the cards you need.

Bloodmage Thalnos and Azure Drake, besides cycling, they can turn over the game with just the +1 Spell Damage when you are playing you AOEs, specially if you have spell damage totem.

Earth Elemental is here just to stall the game, it is great vs aggro due to its taunt and low costand works wonders with Eternal Sentinel or Healing Wave. I don’t find this body can be replaced at all.

Sylvanas Windrunner is IMO one of the best 6 game drops but it can easily be replaced by other card of your like The Black Knight or Emperor Thaurissan.

Alexstrasza is here because usually you don’t deal damage to the opponent early on, most of the times it worked as a 15dmg + threatning body for only 9 cost. Of course this depends on choice, you can replace it with Ysera Ragnaros the Firelord or any other big Legendary of your like.

Card Replacements

  • Bloodmage Thalnos serves two purposes: Cycle and spell damage. He is unique because he is the only card to provide both of this things for such low cost.
There are two substitutes: Loot Hoarder and Kobold Geomancer which both for the same cost serve one of the two purposes you run a Thalnos for.
  • Hallazeal the Ascended  can be replaced with Cult Apothecary, it wonโ€™t heal you that much, but should be able to give you some good health aggainst aggros and it also has a good body for 5.
  • Eternal Sentinel can be replaced by a Lava Shock, there is no other card to unlock your crystals so, if you don’t have 2 of them, you can either add another Ancestral Knowledge  or a Doomsayer for even more board clear backup.

Deck Changes (v1.2)

I have replaced Sylvanas Windrunner with Emperor Thaurissan. Sylvanas is really strong but also very situational. Thaurissan is able to get used as bait for big removals and setup for great combo next turn.

One Ancestral Knowledge has been replaced with Lava Shock. Most of the times we have the cards on our hand and we lose because we aren’t able to play them all right, so there wasn’t needed the extra draw that much, thou it is essential sometimes. On the other hand, Lava Shock is a great card that is able to give that extra damage on a bigger minion when you AOE and even clear the overload.

Deck Changes (v1.1)

The deck was having the bigger issues aggainst control type decks, and most of the time, fatigued out, specially versus priests or warriors. On the other hand, aggainst aggros, I wasn’t having much problems so I decided to make this changes:

Totem Golem for Elise Starseeker, this fights fatigue, adds another taunt and another spell to your deck, it has been working wonders and even adds more fun to the deck!

Flamewreathed Faceless is a great card but it didn’t seem to fit that much due to not having taunt and easily being ignored, so I switched it with Thing from Below. It is played below 4 cost most fo time and its taunt and non-overload feature makes it more reliable.

Alexstrasza for Ragnaros the Firelord. Alexstraza wasn’t fitting the job quite well and after the BGH nerf, Ragnaros has become way stronger and is really hard to deal with if the big removals have already been wasted on your other cards. Nefarian or Ysera are also great and better than Alex due to value you immideatly obtain from them.

I will be continuously updating this deck so please feel free to give your opinions on the comments.

I hope you enjoy this deck as much as I do! Good games!

      Hey there,

Bloodmage Thalnos serves two purposes: Cycle and spell damage. He is unique because he is the only card to provide both of this things for such low cost.
There are two substitutes: Loot Hoarder and Kobold Geomancer which both for the same cost serve one of the two purposes you run a Thalnos for. I haven’t tried any of them but I would probably advice starting with Loot Hoarder.

Update me on how it works out ๐Ÿ™‚

This deck is awesome, thanks for sharing. Played about 20 games so far and have never had so much fun playing hearthstone. This list is solid, I just made one replacement. I replaced one Ancestral Knowledge with a Lava Shock. This deck has so much overload that I wanted the extra overload negate. And your hand count is already high because of the nature of the deck, so card draw with overload doesn’t really fit. I still keep one copy though for those times you need to search for an answer. Fantastic deck though, thanks again.

      Hey!

I have been trying to replace Ancestral Knowledge for a while, after some testing, your idea of Lava Shock fits perfectly. Have updated it on the guide!

Thank you and keep it up!

Awesome! I agree it just fits better. It really helps for those times that Elemental Destruction only hits for 4 when you needed 5, so you can finish their minion off.

I’ve been greatly enjoying this deck. Thank you. Piloted it to 12 so far. I find myself getting stuck with the golden monkey with only 1 or 2 cards left, though, and it has rarely left me with a win condition. I am thinking about replacing Elise with Rafaam and Sylvanas with Thaurissan to help with cost. I seem to be surviving until Rafaam could be useful quite often, but I’m not sure yet how the loss of Elise’s body would impact that. Thoughts?

      Hey there!

I mainly run Elise because of Warriors and Priests. At start I wanted to out fatigue them and also ran with 2 or 3 cards in the end when I used the monkey. After some play I realized the better way to win aggainst those decks is be agressive like a midrange would be, if you have the opportunity to use an early monkey, you should do it, despite not having used all the hexs, for example. There is no way those decks can deal with so much threats continuously.

Rafaam is f** awesome and I’ve seen it more and more, specially on warriors. You can easily replace Elise with him. But I would advice either replacing Ragnaros or Yogg due to the similarities on the cost. Most of the times Elise is a sweet and clean 4 turn drop if you are not overloaded by using the wolves.

      Keep it up!

        Hey!
You can try to replace it with Cult Apothecary, it won’t heal you that much, but should be able to give you some good health aggainst aggros and it also has a good body for 5

          True, good Idea
if I think about this, it really seems to fill the purpose of Hallazeal
thank you, I will try it

    Hi!
I really dont get how this deck can get to top of anything at all… I crafted all the cards for this deck because it was supposed to be amazing and i cant even get to rank 15. I mean the deck is all based in randomness, the AOEs are random, and why sylvanas in here? Just lol… i wont even talk about yogg-saron, are you expecting to win with random spells targetting random chars?? Even the windfury guy can beat this.

      Hey!

You should be able to get past rank 15 with this deck.
Play less around randomness, that’s why thalnos and azure drake are here, so you can boost your AOE’s in case you need it.
Saron was the reason I created this deck, it looks crazy and can turn out really bad sometimes. But if you use it when you have no board it really is amazing most of the time. He can even win a game alone.
Elise starseeker, gives us the monkey that gives us more randomness, but I added it also, you have to wonder why.
Because despite being random the odds are on your favour if you know how to put them on your favour.
Sylvannas is a really strong card and is working wonders, but that is on most nzoth decks, so I guess I agree with you. I’ve already replaced it with Emperor Thaurissan and it makes a huge difference. I need to update it to the guide later.

        Hi again!
I’m sorry i was so agressive in the way i wrote to you but i was really rage at that time not winning a single game and i was like ‘baby dont hurt me no more’… The truth is i didnt understand the deck (plus i was a bit to much drunk ^^) and now that i actually read your guide it really is making wonders as I’m rank 12 alredy :DD.
I’ll try thaurissan instead of sylvanas as you recommended and see what happens.
Keep up the good work and sry again for my baby rage…

    Hi, Cameldd

Nice deck, enjoying it so far, but i made few changes to the deck, would like to know your opition
Currently Im running Frost Shock instead of lightning bolt in my opinion it can be more useful cause, you know it freezes, And we all know freeze is the best condition in the game kikirikiki.
Im also running windfury, imagine this situation you freeze a minion and since it doesnt deal great amount of dmg you can drop windfury and double attack the minion, perfect combo makes the perfect win thats my moto
    Also why no jeweled scarabs?

      May 6, 2016 at 5:39 am

hey! I’m glad you are enjoying it!

I think you won the frost shock argument with da kikirikiki ahah xD

Most of the game you are just trying to survive until you estabilize, so there aren’t a lot of situations where you could do the windfury combo you are talking about or simply just freeze a minion, lightning bolt is a great removal and deals with the threats immideatly

jeweled scarabs was already asked, I skipped it because I didn’t find any card that I would want to trade it with on the deck, but probably it can fit somehow if you are crazy enough to do da freeze windfury scarab double damage kirikiriki combo, who knows! ahah

      Keep it up ๐Ÿ™‚

I’ve tried and it’s amazing! The best is that you get so much fun playing it. Shaman is my favourite class and with this deck I feel like I can now compete with higher ranks than before, thank you!

Hi, I’ve been a fan of shaman control recently. Your decklist looks really good. What do you think of a shaman control deck with ancestral healing and The Black Knight and Icehowl? Also why no jeweled scarabs?

        • Cameldd - Author
          May 5, 2016 at 5:22 pm

          Hey!

The reason I chose to ran Sylvanas instead of black knight was that, sylvanas has some good synergy and sometimes you can steal bigger minions with elemental destruction in case you ran out of hexs. But of course its another great option due to all the c’thun decks with twin emperor.

Icehowl is a reasonable replacement fo Rag, but only if you don’t have him. It is way easier to deal with Icehowl since it gets to lower his HP a lot, considering you would use it to remove a big threat, because for the small threats we already have plenty of AOE spells.

I understand the prespective of introducing ancestral healing but I think the card overall is weak and will stay dead for a long time in the hand. Perhaps you can combo it with sylvanas also but I cannot find what card to replace.

You have to try all that options you can check the results for yourself
