Taking on a new spin on Tempo mage, moving away from the secret package.

The reason I wanted to theory craft this archetype is because Violet Spellwing and Arcane Breath seem super powerful and I believe these two cards would be utilised best in a tempo deck, especially with Aluneth gone these guys provide the early game tempo as well the fuel that Tempo Mage needs going into later turns.

So we are going to need dragons for this to work and I think Azure Explore synergises great with Arcane Missles you get off the Spellwing as well as being and providing you with a dragon needed for Arcane Breath. The 2/3 body is not as good as Comic’s 4/3 but I believe it makes it up with providing you with more dragons to play. Other dragons I have included that might work well in the DoD meta are Faerie Dragon and Evasive Feywing. I think Faerie on 2 against classes like Druid, Rogue, Priest and Warlock to be strong as unless they already have a minion in play then Faerie will be pushing in the early chip damage that Tempo Mage is after. Evasive Feywing I am not to sure about, it is aggressively stated and maybe your opponent is too busy killing minions Chenvaala or Apprentice that dropping this on 4, some might find difficult to remove as well as being a reasonably cheap dragon for Dragon lover cards. Final dragon is Malygos, which is one of your game enders in the deck, it itself being a dragon helps cards like Scalerider and Arcane Breath but can also provide pretty much anything you need later on in the game, from more burn, board clear, card draw or freeze to buy time. Malygos might not have the best attack power but I think the spells he can give you means you its a must.

Finally as well as Mage’s basic and classic set of cards, my final inclusions are Battlemage, Marsh Drake, Scale Rider and Chenvalla. Tempo Mage has struggled to find a replacement to Mana Wyrm since the nerf and I am not saying Battlemage is on the same power level, but for 1 mana you get a 2/2, which I think is good enough int terms of raw stats and helps more consistently have a play on turn 1. Marsh Drake is in my opinion the 30th card in the deck and probably will get the cut once the set comes out and have played a few games, but the idea you can play your Spellwing on 1, coin Marsh Drake out and kill the slayer seems reasonable but really it is there as the last dragon needed for the deck and I think with all the missile cards, the slayer won’t be difficult to remove.

Scale Rider is a neutral SI7… Tempo mage struggles against aggro, so to have this to coin out or to swing back with is mandatory I believe and is the card that made me even consider theory crafting this.

Finally Chenvaala pairs so great with Apprentice and all the cheap spells this deck has. It give the deck more depth and another way to play if the burn plan is not working. maybe you can’t burn them out with your misses so you save your cheap spells to have a swing turn with Chenvaala and Apprentice and you get a couple of 5/5’s with it. But even on 3 it poses such a threat that it is a must kill minion so I think its worth a slot in the deck over Luna for example.
