Deck Import

Secret Paladin is the deck list that is currently terrorizing the meta after the recent release of The Grand Tournament. The deck is made possible by a single new card: Mysterious Challenger. The card has become known as “Dr. 6” because of its similar impact on the game as Dr. Boom (Dr. 7). The deck can run as many as five (Eye for an Eye and Sacred Trial aren’t worth running) different secrets, so when Mysterious Challenger hits the board your Paladin gets lit up like a Christmas tree (five secrets displayed on the Hero Portrait looks like a tree).

This deck has resurrected numerous cards that saw virtually no play: Noble Sacrifice, Redemption, and Secretkeeper. The idea is to flood the board with sticky minions, and get to turn 6 where you have hopefully drawn into your Mysterious Challenger (you even would keep it in your mulligan). You’ll have minions getting buffed left and right once your opponent attempts to make an attack with a minion. Noble Sacrifice triggers, then you get an Avenge, then your Noble Sacrifice minion is resurrected by Redemption. Plus, if you had any type of board, Competitive Spirit triggers and buffs the whole thing.

Secret Paladin Deck List Update – April 2016 (Season 25)

Loatheb in for a Sludge Belcher has seen some play, and Divine Favor is always an option if you feel like you’re playing a lot of control decks.

Secret Paladin Mulligan Guide and Strategy

This deck is so well-rounded now that keeping Mysterious Challenger in your mulligan is no longer necessary. Secrets should be pitched back into the deck immediately. Secretkeeper, Shielded Minibot, Haunted Creeper, and Muster for Battle are the cards you’re looking to keep. Knife Juggler is a worthwhile keep if you have Haunted Creeper or Muster for Battle already.

Secret Paladin Tech Cards

Blessing of Kings is an option if you don’t have Keeper of Uldaman. A second Truesilver Champion or Consecration can go in place of Coghammer, but understand that Coghammer can swing games by completely destroying your opponent’s board while maintaining your own.

Secret Paladin Card Substitutions (Replacements)

Keep in mind that replacements for cards are rarely ever going to be perfect. It’s usually easiest to try and come close to what the card accomplishes, or double up an already existing card in the deck.

Secret Paladin Combos and Synergies

The main reason to play this deck is for Mysterious Challenger and the five potential secrets he can add to your board for 6-mana. You are generally looking to have some kind of board before you make this play, but just dropping him on turn five or six is enough to change the game.

Muster for Battle and Knife Juggler is a pretty potent combination that can take out key cards on your opponent’s board.

Keeper of Uldaman can be played both offensively and defensively. Play it on one of your 1/1s to make a good trade, or target one of their large minions so you can deal with it with a Truesilver Champion.

It’s obvious that this deck is Tier 1 but in which Tier would you put the aggro version of this deck (no Tirion, Boom etc.)? Thanks in advance for the reply! ^^

This deck is a great basic starting point but I’ve found the key with net decks is striking a balance between optimization and personalization. Don’t change them at all to suit your play style and you generally won’t have as much success. At least I don’t. Change them TOO much and you break the deck.

So I swapped out two cards and this deck has been working really well for me (climbed into the Top 10) ever since.

I traded one Secret Keeper for a Divine Favor. Too many times I found myself at a loss for cards and Divine Favor helps keep me from losing momentum. Plus, considering you generally want to save secrets for Mysterious Challenger, playing two Secret Keepers seems like overkill.

I also swapped out a Sludge Belcher for a Loatheb. This was painful. I love me some Belcher! But I’ve found that being able to lay down that Loatheb on turn 5, right before you bring out Mysterious Challenger, keeps many opponents from clearing the board. Because, let’s face it, they know what you’re about to do on Turn 6. And even on Turns 7, 8 and 9 Loatheb provides great value.

So that’s what’s working for me. I’m no Hearthstone Pro. Just a guy at the bottom end of the Top 10, trying to work his way up the ladder.

Blessing of Kings for Uldaman, and you could try Sunwalker or second Truesilver for Tirion.

When you have the dream, Secret Keeper, Coin, Avenge. Secret Keeper, Nobel Sac. And your opponent counters perfectly with Wrath, Innervate, Keeper, after ramping on 2, Innervate boom on turn 4… This is why druid is better than pally.

      Hello,

maybe there’s something wrong in your Mulligan ?

Also, what are the decks that beat you ? How do you lose ?

I ended up including a Kezan because I met too many Mages (and mirrors, and hunters, but I mostly lost to Mages), and a Divine Favor to fix my draw problems.

  7. Orpheus
    January 19, 2016 at 12:31 am

I’ve been playing this all through the ladder with much success.

    My small variations :

no Repentance (useless most of the time, I don’t even fear it in mirror) and 2 Redemption ; just one Belcher in favor of a Blessing of Kings (which makes it a little more aggro I guess).

I’ve been toying with Kezan and Horreb, but they never seemed to be better choices than, well, anything else.

But now I’m at Rank 5 and meet many mirrors (most of them I beat), hunters and other very aggro decks (I usually win) but also Freeze Mage.

So I’m wondering about putting Kezan or Horreb in again, but on what ? One Uldaman ?

I’m also thinking about including one Quartermaster, to make it more fierce.

And the last idea for one different slot is a Healbot. I know, it isn’t usually played in such a deck, but it would help against fast aggro, and even more so against Freeze (just keep it until after Alextrasza).

So what do you think about including one of these 4, and by removing what ?

    • rtz
      February 19, 2016 at 10:29 am

Horreb is a must have at this rank (freeze and druid, help vs tempomage). healbot look like bad here try lay on hands if you meet many face.decks.

I swapped out 1 secret keeper for 1 divine favor and my match ups have just skyrocketed against various lock, warrior, and priest decks. Double keeper is pretty lackluster and only really good if a) you drew terrible or b) your opponent is playing a heavy amount of secrets as well. Never running out of steam or playing heavy to set up a massive return is just too powerful to ignore.

Hey guys, I am running this list very strongly with no prior experience with the deck i ended the stream 13-4 in my first grind session. I did make 1 change i cut 1 sludge belcher for 1 loatheb. Seems to make a huge difference against the freeze mages and control priests I have been running up against. But i have been hearing alot of buzz about Keeper of Uldaman and wondered what your thoughts were. Is there a reason you elected not to run it? Same question with Aldor Peacekeeper. I’ve seen quite a few variations and many of them are playing these cards. Why is this list not? I have been toying with the idea of cutting the secret keepers for another creeper and a Keeper since most of the time they are unimpressive.

    • Azr1th
      January 4, 2016 at 2:32 am

ADD ON: why no repentance or Sacred Trial? both seem at least decent to run. Just no room? or is there a specific reason they didnt make the cut?

      • Evident - Author
        January 4, 2016 at 9:48 am

Well, those are considered the weaker of the secrets, plus they don’t have an affect on your board. Also, the idea is to draw as few secrets as possible and use Mysterious Challenger to pull them out of your deck. The more you run, the more likely you are going to draw them.

    • Evident - Author
      January 4, 2016 at 9:46 am

This is a “meta” list, so I try to compile the average list you’ll see on the ladder. It’s true, I’ve seen some people playing Keeper of Uldaman. I’ve also seen Aldor Peacekeeper show up in the deck previously. I think it’s just personal preference, but if I see a lot more of it then I will revise the list.

      • Juscallmenik
        January 4, 2016 at 1:41 pm

This is definitely a great “average” list because it’s about what you’ll see. People tech in all kinds of things. Aldors, Uldamans, Divine Favors, Rags, Equality etc etc.

You should probably add a section that highlights variations of the deck. Like “Vs control cut this and add this” and “vs aggro cut this and add this”. Because typically people add these cards for specific matchups.

For example on my Legend run. I started using secret pally. I cut the secret keepers and replaced them with Zombie Chows. I felt like they had a bigger impact on turn 1 vs aggro. It worked out for me.

Hey I got a problem and I would be really glad if you can help me I got 1509 dust and I opened a golden Illidian stormrage today. If I discenchan him for 1600 dust I will have enough to finish this deck.I play the game about 4 months but I just can’t decide what to do cause many suggest me to wait for changes in spring what’s your opinion and btw what to do with Illidian ?

        • Evident - Author
          February 16, 2016 at 2:10 pm

I would personally wait for the changes in Spring. There’s going to be nerfs and a new expansion coming so there’s going to be a lot of changes in the near future. Secret Paladin in particular is going to be hit hard by the format changes, so unless you plan on playing the Wild format I wouldn’t craft it.

    • Evident - Author
      November 21, 2015 at 10:28 am

I’d consider Argent Horserider or maybe even Worgen Infiltrator. You want a sticky minion.

    • spank
      December 11, 2015 at 12:13 pm

neither argent horserider or worgen infiltrator are good replacements. worgen is a one drop, and haunted creeper provides three bodies to deal with, which works out perfectly for competitive spirit and blessing of kings targets. infiltrator is good for getting that sure 2 dmg to face in which you do not need in this deck as much as the bodies. argent horserider is three mana for a charging 2 damage, again not what this deck wants. this deck isn’t a face deck it’s a value deck.

what fits in perfectly and in my opinion much better then creeper if you aren’t running competitive spirit at all, which i do not, is annoyotron. annoyotron takes TWO attacks instead of ZERO to reach your face/other minions compared to haunted creeper, takes at least 2 attacks to kill, has the same power and toughness, and taunt. annoyotron is perfect for early ranks on your way to rank 5-legend slowing down all those face hunters and aggro shamans you will face.

    Replacement for haunted creeper?

    • Evident - Author
      November 8, 2015 at 9:51 am

I would try Gilbin Stalker as a sticky minion, or you could try Flame Juggler. Haunted Creeper is a really good card though, so I’d try to get it if you’re serious about this deck.

Question:how would one tech AGAINST this deck? Kezan mystic hardly makes a dent.

    • buttermellow
      December 24, 2015 at 5:06 am

You’re right with Kezan. The method I see most have success with, and try to use myself, is to play around the huge swing of turn 6.

The best way is to make sure he has an empty board when he plays MC and you can a disposable minion. You then attack into MC, kill the ‘Get Down’, then hopefully you use spot removal like polymorph, BGH, PW: Death on MC.

You waste the avenge, get down, the revival secret, and competitive spirit (because will only buff the ‘get down’ minion which is negligible.

That tactic should work with most classes, and if your deck can’t personally manage that, then it is simply ill-suited to take on secret paladin decks – WHICH IS FINE if you perform well against all the other meta decks and achieve >50% win rate overall.

how about removing the secret keepers and abusive sergeant and adding tirion and dr.7 for late game and adding a blood knight or 2 for a repentance for a devastating 12/12 in the midgame because of argent squires and shielded minibots

that way you have other big threats other than the challenger, plus you can burn your opponents removals on the blood knights much more faster and have no way to deal with tirion and dr.7 in the late game.

also, i would keep the piloted shredders and haunted creepers as early ‘sticky’ minions to maintain board control throughout the match.

please correct me on my view point if i’m wrong, i’m sure many others have better ideas than i do.

My deck runs a few diffrent things compared to this and its great for me. Intead of knife i took flame juggler, (last matches a simple 2-1 card have killed knife) intead of favor i took boom and tirion, instead of aquire i took zombie chow. I dont run any creeper instead i use double weapon. The reason for no divine favor is that i nearly never over play o one turn and most other decks now is aggro or mid range which doesnt make u draw much.

It’s generally a bad idea to disenchant legendaries (they are expensive to craft), but Mogor the Ogre is pretty bottom tier and if you don’t have a lot of other cards you will probably be fine disenchanting him.

Forget Quartermaster. Just won three games in a row, one of which I never even saw Mysterious Challenger and still was way ahead the whole game. I feel a nerf is gonna hit this build in some way shape or form.

This deck just poops on Warrior anything really. However I seems to lose just about all match ups to Hunters. They are just faster. Have to god had most times and that really isn’t a promise.

Haunted creeper is irreplacable….dr balance will ruin your draws. This deck is nearly perfect….I dont run leper gnomes. Secretkeeper is not replacable. I use 1 truesilver for board control….and a blood knight in place of leper gnomes. Nerfing this would be crazy. Its a simple aggro deck. If people cant beat it….they suck at playing. This deck is beatable….

Main reason I dont include late game or bigger minions….gg by turn 7 almost every game. People just dont know how to defend it yet. Lmfao at how many really really
      bad players there are

haunted creeper is definitely replaceable and serves no specific purpose in this deck. Secretkeeper is most certainly replaceable, as a one drop isn’t that big of a deal in such a midrange deck. I’m not saying they are bad cards or do not arguably have a place in the deck, but saying something is irreplaceable is an incredibly powerful exaggeration, proven wrong by the countless people winning tournaments/achieving legend without such cards in their secret paladin decks.

They should nerf it, because its weak against just like 2 decks, and yes, people can beat it, but with the actual meta is pretty hard if you dont play hunter… saying that a deck is beatable doesnt mean that its balanced… btw i think that they should nerf the mysterious challenger and make him play max 3 secrets or something like that (still a very good card)

Would 2 x Truesilver instead of Haunted Creepers be any better?

I’ve seen people play it this way, so I guess it’s up to preference. Though I like the creeper more.

If you face a lot of patron warriors it would definitely help remove them better than the creepers.

I hate this deck with passion. It’s everywhere lately and seems to pull off wins even after you clear the board and fought through 10 secrets. I’m just glad that Paladin doesn’t have the same weapon as Hunter.

    Hello Mysterious Challenger, meet Flare.

I have been Flared once. However I drew another Mysterious Challenger the following turn so it was moot. However I felt so emotionally defeated when I saw my opponent cast Flare. Such a simple card that can take down a whole setup. Good times.

This deck is pretty consistent though. I don’t run abusive sergeant or secret keeper. Instead I run more sticky creatures like Harvest Golem and Murloc Knight. The value from Murloc Knight is too good not to have at least a one-of auto include. I also run Dr. Boom for late game survival.
