Deck Import

The Control Warrior deck has been an ever evolving deck for nearly the full life of Hearthstone. The deck at its core is very similar to the original decks, but Control Warrior also adds all of the great Legendaries and strong late game cards to its repertoire as they are released. More recently due to Blackrock Mountain there has been a lean towards a more Dragon based Control Warrior which takes advantage of Blackwing Corruptor.

One of the main constants has been Grommash Hellscream. The card is a great finisher, and when combined with Death's Bite and Alexstrasza can be a potent way to end the game.

Control Warrior Deck List Update – April 2016 (Season 25)

The updated list is based off of Vlps’ recent list that got him a top 20 finish on the NA Legendary Ladder. A lot of cards have been cut from the deck, such as Armorsmith, Baron Geddon, and Alexstrasza. The deck now employs more defensive tools like Deathlord, Revenge, and a second Brawl. Elise Starseeker has also been added to the deck to help in fatigue situations, and add some more end game threats.

Control Warrior Mulligan Guide and Strategy

Fiery War Axe and Death's Bite are your best friends against most decks. Deathlord is good against early aggro, and Acolyte of Pain is good for draw and dealing with the potential of early minions. Slam and Bash are also good against early minions like Flame Imp, Knife Juggler, and Darnassus Aspirant. If you know you’re playing against Control, you can look to keep Execute or Sludge Belcher.

Control Warrior Tech Cards

Harrison Jones is in and out of the deck depending on if you’re playing a lot of Weapon classes. Ysera will swap in and out with a card like Ragnaros the Firelord depending on how many Big Game Hunters have entered the meta. This is especially the case when Druid is strong (like right now). Gorehowl is a consideration, and is extremely good against other Control decks.

Control Warrior Card Substitutions (Replacements)

Keep in mind that replacements for cards are rarely ever going to be perfect. It’s usually easiest to try and come close to what the card accomplishes, or double up an already existing card in the deck.

You might find cards here that aren’t in the deck, this means they were in the deck previously and have been left in case they come back in the deck. They also works as substitutions for cards that are currently in the deck!

  • Harrison Jones: I find that Harrison is the card that’s most often asked for replacement. Loatheb is a reasonable replacement, and Acidic Swamp Ooze can also take a spot if you are just getting destroyed by Weapon classes.
  • Baron Geddon: I’ve often recommended a second Brawl, but some players don’t like this recommendation. Whirlwind or Revenge is a possibility, or you could simply add a second Shieldmaiden.
  • Grommash Hellscream: Tough card to replace as it leads so often to situations where you can finish your opponent. Ragnaros the Firelord can be a decent replacement.
  • Alexstrasza: Another difficult card to replace because of the pressure it can place on the opponent. I again think Ragnaros, but you could try just adding a second Shieldmaiden. The deck has enough strong minions that you could deal without Alex.

Control Warrior Combos and Synergies

Death's Bite and Grommash Hellscream are a match made in heaven. You can smash your opponent’s face for 4, and follow up the next turn with Grommash and the whirlwind effect from Death’s Bite for an additional 14 damage. This combo can also be setup with Alexstrasza to get your opponent down to a manageable health.

Speaking of Grommash, you can use Slam, Bash, or Shield Slam (just don’t do it for 9) to activate his enrage. You can also use these cards to trigger your Sylvanas Windrunner, just don’t try to use Execute as Artosis learned a while back.

Shield Block and Shieldmaiden pair very nicely with Shield Slam, and can help you take down a pesky 5-health minion.

Acolyte of Pain is generally a card you want to get at least two draws from.  So pairing it with Death's Bite, Baron Geddon, or even using Slam can guarantee multiple cards.

What would be a good replacement for Barron Geddon

      Revenge, Whirlwind, or second Shieldmaiden.

    Greatings,
I’m lacking alex and ysera, but i´m only able to craft 1 of them, despite what i like or not to play (since im starting on control decks), what do you advise me?

    • Evident - Author

I’d lean towards Alexstrasza, especially if you like the idea of Freeze Mage.

should i craft grom or trueheart?

If you only see yourself playing Warrior in the near future then I would go with Grom. If you might want to play Control Priest or Midrange Paladin then I’d go with Trueheart (it fits in both of these decks).

I think after trying out many patron decks that this is the best variation of patron warrior out there. Definitely had a lot success with this deck.

What about -2 slam, +1 gorehowl +1 shieldmaiden, it will work?

    • Snooxi
      January 17, 2016 at 7:13 am

just armor up so he cant kill you one turn and when he plays combo just brawl and he concede .. easy

      • Loki
        January 27, 2016 at 5:12 am

And then he plays another combo (because you will both be close to fatigue by then and he will have it) and then you die.

      • Sven
        February 23, 2016 at 3:45 pm

Snooxi, you can never have ever played CW against a murloc paladin if you make that comment. Playing CW against anyfin decks are like playing freeze mage against CW. You call it easy?

You should just remove your comment since it makes 0 sense and go back to the face hunter forum.

How would -1 Slam do for a second shield block? I find shield block a really useful card for tanking up in the early game, and it’s saved my life against a lot of aggro decks. Would this change be worth it?

why waste some nice Def vs Aggro Decks for a weak 4 dropp who might gives you after some time a hand full of Legendary, you alrdy got tons of legendarys in this deck, and the ones you need, what is important besides a hand of millhouse, cho, pagle and thalnos
sure i can go either way but i would keep the legendarys i got alrdy….

      • Nightcrawler
        February 21, 2016 at 2:43 pm

Elise is mainly played in control warrior to protect longer against fatigue longer, half the time you get the golden monkey you won’t even want to play it.

If you want ideas, I have some:

            – PM system: yeah, it’s just convenient

            – Moderators: I feel like taking advantage of timezones can be really helpful– provided that people with knowledge are picked, the site could have one staff member online at all times, ready to answer questions about decks and approve comments.

The PM System might be a little while, but I could see adding it in the future. I agree with moderators, I’ll be thinking about how I want to implement it.

Is losing a Bash to make room for Reno reasonable? Reno has won me a number of games while testing with him in place of Baron. Baron really needs to be in the deck as an answer to all the aggro though so I’m trying to think of what to take out. I was thinking the one-of Shield Block but since it’s Reno we’re talking about I was hoping to remove one of the 8 duplicates to make him a more consistent answer to aggro.

    Thoughts?

That’s fine, but it weakens your aggro matchup.

      • Control freak

Actually reno jackson works perfectly as counter aggro. Basically you use weapons and all to clear minions. Just before lethal play reno jackson

Baron Geddon is essential tô the deck? I have ali the other cards. And why not use Varian in Control Warrior?

    • Evident - Author
      December 2, 2015 at 8:52 am

It’s good against decks that have a lot of minions, but you could just use Shieldmaiden as a replacement. Varian wastes your Battlecries and playing just that for 10-mana leaves you vulnerable to many things.

  17. Joshheng11
    November 26, 2015 at 7:13 pm

Hey evident, i lack justicar trueheart and grommash hellscream. Is it advisable to craft them or are there any solid replacements? I am currently running a dragon warrior and would love to try out control warrior as my play style is of a slower kind.

    • Evident - Author
      November 26, 2015 at 7:24 pm

You for sure want Grommash, but I think you can wait on Justicar. You could throw in a second Shieldmaiden for her in the meanwhile. You might struggle a bit with other Control Warriors that do have Justicar though.

Can I replace Ysera and Geddon? or should I just play a different deck if I don’t have these.

    • Evident - Author
      November 26, 2015 at 10:00 am

You can still play it without those cards, obviously it’s going to be weaker. Second Shieldmaiden and Nefarian could work.

    Any Replacement for Alex?

    • Evident - Author
      November 26, 2015 at 10:01 am

That’s a tougher one to replace, because it limits your ability to finish with Grommash and Death’s Bite. You can try Nefarian or a second Shieldmaiden.

  20. Headhunter
    November 26, 2015 at 12:27 am

The only card I don’t have is Baron Geddon (which ironically I got off a card pack ages ago and destroyed lol). Replacement? I’m also curious as to what Baron Geddon’s purpose is in this deck? I’m assuming anti-aggro? Enlighten me?

    • Evident - Author
      November 26, 2015 at 11:07 am

Yes, Baron Geddon is used to sweep the board. I’d just go with a second Shieldmaiden.

      • Headhunter
        November 26, 2015 at 10:30 pm

I have a Varian Wrynn, would that be better than a Shieldmaiden substitute? Or is he no good for this deck?

        • Evident - Author
          November 27, 2015 at 11:05 pm

I rarely see it played. It wastes your battlecries and playing a 10-drop usually ends up going poorly (you lose the next turn).

  24. WUBWUB

  25. trecex
    November 12, 2015 at 6:23 pm

I can craft 2 out of these 3 which are better? ysera alexstrasza justicar

    • Evident - Author
      November 13, 2015 at 8:56 am

It depends on what other decks you might want to play. Ysera and Justicar are in most control decks, but Alexstrasza is in Control Warrior and Freeze Mage. Ysera might be the least important of those three in this deck, but I’m not a Control Warrior expert.

  26. Dyrus
    November 8, 2015 at 10:43 am

I was also thinking madder bomber could be a decent replacement for harrison or even loathed cause you probably won’t have much on board asides from acolytes and it can clear small boards or set up executes

  27. Dyrus
    November 8, 2015 at 10:39 am

I have always wanted to build this deck. I have every card but harrison, baron, grommash, and alex. I have enough dust to craft two which should I craft? I also have rag, where could i fit him in.

    • Evident - Author
      November 8, 2015 at 12:05 pm

Grom and Alex are probably the best, but I’m not an expert on Control Warrior. Rag can go in for Baron Geddon, although Baron is pretty important right now with decks that flood the board.

    • Vigilant

Very good in that it crushes Face Hunter, which comprises ~75% of the meta from 20-10.

What is a good replacement for baron geddon?

  30. Atma
    October 31, 2015 at 1:27 pm

Justicar is what makes control warrior a powerhouse now. being able to tank up over shielding allows you to grind the game out much easier, which is what control warrior is supposed to do IMO

  31. J3yno
    October 31, 2015 at 5:37 am

Personally I don’t see the point in BGH, you’re likely to play it later in the game at around the same time as Baron Geddon, thus cancelling each other out, as you need to get rid of the mid game board. I’d get rid of BGH for another brawl as it just gets rid of more of the opponents board more easily, in a meta where many opponents want to flood the board with minions.

  32. Zanon
    October 31, 2015 at 5:02 am

I totally agree with bash and slam but justicar? I mean it s a great card and helps a lot but the tempo loss is insane.. I was losing to a control warr with my midrange hunter but once he played justicar tides turned… Isn t it too slow?

    • SuperMarvio
      November 4, 2015 at 12:12 am

I just love Justicar! Tempo is not that important in a control warrior, but 2 Mana for 4 armor is just insane. I have turned many matches with her because aggro decks have no chance when you “heal” yourself every turn. You just outvalue them, and get em down with your big legendaries.

I have a question I got most of the cards I’m just missing some legendaries. What I want to know is which legendary I should get next . Is alexstraza, sylvanis or ysera. I leaning towards Sylvanis for extra protection.

    • Evident - Author
      October 27, 2015 at 9:32 am

I would generally lean towards Sylvanas because it’s used in more decks. Alexstrasza is pretty important in this deck though.

  37. Alias
    October 26, 2015 at 6:23 pm

Sorry, me again. Couple of questions. I got the whole of Naxxramas yesterday. I have Death’s Bite and Belcher. Got acolytes, shieldmaidens, armorsmiths, and taskmasters. Is it worth playing Control Warrior now? If it’s Tier 2, why isn’t it Tier 1? It’s so resilient against aggro, and a lot of the decks popular in the meta. Also, I have Loatheb, can I use him until I get Harrison?

    • Evident - Author
      October 26, 2015 at 7:14 pm

Loatheb works for Harrison. It depends on what legendaries you have, if you are missing a majority of them then I wouldn’t bother playing it. Control Warrior doesn’t do well against Paladin and Druid which are generally considered the top tier decks.

  38. D01tY

I really want to play a warrior deck. I play casually, and I’m alright with spending time on Hearthstone. I have the first wing of BrM, and have had a decent amount of experience with Patron Warrior. Evident, should I go for Control Warrior or Patron Warrior if I just play casually (one of those two, since I’m a high-level warrior with lots of cards for him).

    • Evident - Author
      October 4, 2015 at 7:41 am

It’s really personal preference. If you feel comfortable with Patron Warrior then I’d probably play that. It’s the better deck and doesn’t require a ton of legendaries (and also might get nerfed someday, so enjoy it while you can!). I personally enjoy Control Warrior, but the games can be much longer which might be bad if you just want to play casually.

      • Alias
        October 4, 2015 at 8:16 am

Well, to be honest, I said that I’ve had a decent amount of experience with it to sound like I’m not a total noob when it comes to Patron Warrior, but I am. I’ve really just had around 8 games of experience with it. I think I’m probably going to go Control Warrior, since I enjoy longer games, and it requires a little less skill to play. As a former Miracle and Oil rogue player, I’ve watched my favorite deck get torn apart, so the reason I even asked this question is that I want a deck that’ll withstand the test of time (which I think Control Warrior has done already). I play daily, not for 3 hours, but just for 1 hour. And a question about the deck itself:

What can I replace Revenge with? I got Death’s Bite from Naxx already, but Revenge will take more time to get (since I used all my gold, and some of my change on Naxx already).

        • Alias
          October 4, 2015 at 8:34 am

Sorry for spamming with you with questions (I’m just keen to start my adventure on Control Warrior), but what are the top crafting priority cards in this deck? Should I save for the legendaries or go for the smaller minions/spells? Thanks!

          • Evident - Author
            October 4, 2015 at 2:22 pm

I think the removal and the card draw is the most important. Then you want to start building up your legendaries. Dr. Boom and Grommash are probably the most important, followed by Alexstarsza and Ysera. I’m not a control warrior expert, so if anyone else has advice feel free to chime in!

          • Baalnaarath
            November 4, 2015 at 8:26 pm

Brawl and Shield slams, also shield maiden… then go for big legendaries.

        • Evident - Author
          October 4, 2015 at 2:07 pm

You can replace Revenge with a second Shield Block (or Whirlwind if you value the AOE). Revenge can be a fringe card, and I might actually remove it from this list in the next update.

Control Warrior would be more consistent for an average player, but getting better with Patron means you can have good match ups with all decks.

Not to sure about the Baron Geddon, doesn’t it kill a lot of your own minions?

Thaurissan is not a good card on this deck.

You need to trade piloted shredder for revenge. I see more people run revenge than piloted shredder

I really miss Ironbeak Owl. It is a key card on Control Warrior in my opinion. I like StrifeCro’s list -1 Piloted Shredder -1 Emperor Thaurissan and +1 Ironbeak Owl +1 Revenge.
I felt that Revenge was an unexpected good card. I used to run Whirlwind, it helps a lot against Paladins and Hunters, but Revenge has an nice effect… Also, I never had any problem due to it costing one more mana. I have been testing Emperor Thaurissan a lot and I don’t think that it makes really a change on Control Warrior 😀

In the list there is 1 card missing (11+18=29).

This is a very unusual list. Double shredder is something I have never seen on ladder in this deck, and i would say loatheb is quite an odd pick as well. I would take those out and replace them with a second brawl, Harrison, and most definitely Sylvanas. I have never before seen a Control warrior that didn’t run Sylvanas.

You’re right, I changed the list to a more standard version!

REALLY dont like Loatheb there, just prefer Harrison Jones, and not Thaurissan for +1 Brawl. -2 Shreeder for 1 Owl and for SURE SYLVANAS!!!
