Zerek, Master Cloner Card Review

Interesting mechanic, but I think that it might be on the weaker side. On the one hand, the potential is massive. Being able to revive it over and over again is incredibly powerful, basically better than any other Deathrattle card. But there’s a catch – it’s very hard to make it work.

First of all, it’s useless by itself. 6 mana 5/5 with no effect whatsoever. Only after you cast a spell on it, it “activates” itself. So it’s not really a 6 mana play, but at least a 7 mana play. Another issue is that Priest doesn’t have enough cheap buffs to cast on him. Power Word: Shield is one, but what after that? Divine Spirit is not really an option, because you don’t run this in Combo Priest. Binding Heal is okay, but only after it’s already on the board and takes some damage. Unidentified Elixir is the only other flexible buff that you can run, and it’s not the best card ever, plus the combo is 9 mana. Maybe Vivid Nightmare too, especially if you run deck with lots of Deathrattles. Maybe if you combine Vivid Nightmare AND Binding Heal, it can be nice. For 10 mana you end up with two 5/5 bodies that both come back on Deathrattle. Not the best play ever, but pretty good.

It’s weak to Silence, but that’s not a big issue in a Deathrattle Priest – most of the cards you play are weak to Silence, and this one doesn’t get completely countered like Lynessa Sunsorrow. The problem is that right now it’s pretty hard to activate. You don’t really want to keep your Shields just for this guy, and there aren’t other great cards you can use to activate it. And ideally, you want to activate him more than once to make him worth it – otherwise you’d just run Cairne Bloodhoof and don’t bother with casting extra spells on it.

Realistically, in order for this to be playable, you really need another cheap way to buff it. If a good 1-2 mana buff spell gets printed, then this card has some solid potential. If not, I don’t see it working right now.

Card rating: 4/10 right now, or 7/10 if another good, cheap buff spell gets revealed

A lot of good cheap priest spells just released like Topsy Turvy which is a zero mana spell that let you switches a minion’s attack and health. CloneMaster Zerek might be playable now

If you Summon Zerek out of Twilight´s Call trigger his Deathrattle? Because when they have a buff call Shadow they are summon by Twilight´s Call

This card is pretty nutty if it gets off once or twice as it already demands attention from silence effects. One thing to remember is that with the new changes to how things are copied, the second one that is created by ‘vivid nightmare’ or ‘power word: replicate’ will also gain the death rattle’s effect of respawning since the new copy did have a spell cast on it.

Will Vivid Nightmare activate the deathrattle on the copy? Since it is a copy after the spell is cast?

    • Greg
      July 28, 2018 at 3:15 am

Good question, I don’t think it would activate the copy’s deathrattle. The spell is cast on the first minion and the copy is just the outcome. I’m liking the possibility of being able to run the quest with only a few deathrattle minions and Lyra spell rebirth mixed in. These clone cards open up the quest deck to have more variability and more flexibility to tech against the meta.

People are saying this is bad… But it’s a Quest Priests dream. A deathrattle that can, in the right circumstances, infinitely come back? Imagine getting this off of Twilight or copying with Potion or Vivid Nightmare? Just need to cast a spell on it? Any spell? Simple. Get rid of two cards, shove in two Power Word: Shield. Just death it to bring it back if you need to. Holy water it to get a copy in hand and summon another one! Just add some small spells to Quest Priest and you’re good. Easy completion, if it wasn’t easy already.

Still bad though. I can’t imagine quest priest deck with enough good cheap spells in the first place. And the value this card brings is not huge anyway compared to other value generators that are in the game right now.

yeah right, infinitely isn’t an option, there is a finite number of buff you can have as a priest, and even less that you can play on the right tempo, an even if you wait and try to buff this card over an over, do you really think the enemy will just lay around giving you free tempo? there is a lot of aggro decks in this meta, you will be dead before summon ur 3rd zerek.

The fact that this card is having 4/5 rating by people is the reason why 95% of players never get to legend 😀

This card is pure trash, not playable at all in any deck.

This card would of been good, if they added the last line of text, of it keeps the spells you cast on it….. like it still has inner fire when it comes back……then…. then its a legend worthy card!

    • Helix
      July 27, 2018 at 7:49 pm

Actually, I think 95% of players never get to legend because legend consists of the top ~5%.

        July 28, 2018 at 2:40 am

Or simply you dont care about going legend once you go there once.Theres no benefit.
Also if you are above 15 years old you probably dont have more than 1 hour a day to play the game anyway. So good luck needing 200-800 games to reach legend.

Could be good with radiant elemental spell shenanigans. I don’t agree that it’s a worse cairne honestly. One it’s better stated but it’s effect is infinite which makes it sticky, there are many copy cards in priest, and this with Lyra train could be crazy value.

    • Nope
      July 27, 2018 at 4:33 pm

It’s not infinite. It needs to be reactivated every time it ‘dies’.

just like the 9 mana spell this card is so bad priest always geting worst legedary in every set
.tempuras.dragon weapon.lady in white .now these 2 new are so disaster.they are both very slow and useless.
6 mana 5 5 and so what.i get another 5 5 ?this card is so bad its has no point to win or any problem for my oponent.6 mana sylanas or emperror or many other better 6 drops are there so this card will not be seen play.and we consider that priest has so many resurect cards .

        July 28, 2018 at 7:24 am

I don’t think it is infinite value, because you only have two power word shields in your deck, and maybe two unidentified elixirs, so I’d say it is 4 value at best, but more realistically, the best you can probably get is the two resurrects from the power word: shields.

Even more realistically, this dies the moment it is played and you get 0 resurrects

  15. DavistheSavage
    July 27, 2018 at 1:15 pm

the problem with this and silence is that this REQUIRES you to play a spell on it, meaning that when they silence it, not only do you lose the deathrattle, but you lose that buff too

neat combo though, when this gets damaged, you can play a shadow word: death on it to return it to full health! 🙂

    Very good card imo.

  17. Soup And Salad
    July 27, 2018 at 10:29 am

I like the flavor, and there are a good handful of buff cards Priest has to work with, so this minion should be incredibly sticky. I could see it potentially being played in the current format Hearthstone exists in since it is really rather slow, but if the metagame speeds up, this will be a value card that is a bit too slow.

Perhaps something will come along that will make this card more exciting.

    It’s like cairne
    except worse
because it’s likely you won’t have a buff spell in hand
and because you need to cast the spell right away, meaning you can’t even drop this on 6

    and nobody plays cairne

And how is this card bad?

  21. minti
    July 27, 2018 at 8:43 am

well considering the vanilla equation to balance cards; mana x 1/1 for each mana cost + 0/1 for the max stat s for kind of each mana. So Understated. Comes waaaaaay too late with 0 iniciative to be competitive. I don;t even want to compare it to Sylvanas. Where class cards should be kind of better than the neutrals. On top of its low stats and high mana you need to cast a SPELL to even have a deathrattle. so a silenc eon this would counter 2 cards not one.

    • minti
      July 27, 2018 at 8:46 am

Ok sylvanas is kind of hall of fame now. But you know Carion is stil lhere. How is this suposed to compete with him. We know he got retired couse of the meta and stuff. But seriously 4/5 stat line deathrattle gain a 4/5 i don;t think this legendary will be even close to that power level. casting vivid nightmare on it still makes you dead by turn 5 so you are talking about a turn 9 combo.

we are now at 1 out of 8 of last priest legends are playable. Shadow reaper Anduin…. this set zerek and his gallery. trash. witchwood… lady and chameleos saw no play cause bad…. kobolds…. temporas and the locket… 2 of the worst legends ever made…. lich kind great for priests then super nerfed

      • minti
        July 27, 2018 at 8:59 am

Well shadow reaper anduin is a bit weaker than hagatha so he and thraal are arguing who is weaker for now. So even anduin is not that playable. I did speculate that next year there could b esome dragon priest comeback. Although with the multi colored dragon i was hoping we would get some good drago nexperiments for priest this expansion. But i wouldn’t put my hopes that high. Priest legendaryes were always weak. And priest was always operating on the neutral legendaries. So we can stil lget some legendary dragon experiment with random dragon aspect power :D.

How can assume this card will be straight trash, considering Priest will take a control turn as it already has? And I’m pretty sure Anduin isn’t playable right now, but the Quest and Velen are.

        Lich King wasn’t nerfed?

“The worst legends ever made” clearly you know nothing about the game.

A more situational Cairne Bloodhoof. I suspect Priest will have better things to do than try to make this work, but then again he’s due for some nice new buff spells (sorry, Mysterious Elixir) so maybe there will be support.

This is a very good control card.

I was expecting like a mini N’zoth 6-8 mana cost Battlecry “Summon 2 3/3 copies of deathrattle minions that died this game”, cairne is better than this because priest is like, have no buff cards. Giving it Taunt would have been great. this card have no use in this aggro meta.

That would be because Warrior and Priest aren’t viable in high ladder. You haven’t played them because they don’t exist.

  30. GlosuuLang
    July 27, 2018 at 7:51 am

So, if you cast a spell on this, it becomes a better Cairne Bloodhoof, with the possibility of insane value if you resummon it a third time. Otherwise it’s horrible. By the time you drop this, you’ve probably already used at least one Power Word: Shield, probably the two if you drew them early game. So… are you going to Divine Spirit this after dropping it? Unidentified Elixir it? It’s not that Priest has a myriad of buff spells like Paladin has… This also gets horribly countered by silence and transform effects (part of the reason why Cairne sees no play nowadays). I expect this to see play if the synergistic Deathrattle Priest deck gets into the meta, or if you can somehow cheat it out (with the Experimenter maybe?). But otherwise… meh. It’s still “only” a 5/5, in a class that is normally fighting behind in the board… 2/5 stars, it does have potential for shenanigans, but it doesn’t seem powerful right now.

The card is too slow for what it does. Also, why is this a legendary? Seems bad. 1.5/5

    • DukeStarswisher
      July 27, 2018 at 8:13 am

It’s a legendary because the theme this expansion is one legendary spell and the heads of the departments of boom labs. If you’re asking about why it’s effect makes it legendary, than you need to understand that:

      rarity =/= card value

      • Nickname23
        July 27, 2018 at 8:22 am

Yeah, I understand that, but some boy may be a bit dissappointed by a legendary for one of his 3 favourite classes 😉

          July 27, 2018 at 9:31 am

Yeah Priest is my fav too. I am also a little disappointed. But my main want for Priest is an odd aoe spell.

I think this card could work in the distant future with more additions but as it stands…. meh.

I personally don’t think this card will ever work but I highly agree with you on AoE spells for priest. Psychic is nuts in Combo-decks, sure, but other than that?

  32. Swayer
    July 27, 2018 at 7:39 am

I knew it would be a deathrattle, but was hopping for a better effect. Maybe like the rouges go dorment minion, because then you could play it with the other not so good legendary priest weapon xD

  33. Wikator
    July 27, 2018 at 7:30 am

I hope that nobody will use it. It must be really annoying to play against it.

  34. Hubriz
    July 27, 2018 at 7:18 am

It might work in a list similar to the current combo priest lists, as they only have a fixed number of minions to cast their combo on, and they sometimes struggle to Stick a Minion on board to win the game with.
Other Priest Decks don’t use any buff spells other than Power Word shield. The thing is, you only have two Power Word Shields Max in your deck (plus maybe Shadow Visions Copies, but PWS isn’t really the top priority when casting shadow visions).

  35. DukeStarswisher
    July 27, 2018 at 7:15 am

If the card texts means you need to have it as a target of a spell, then priest isn’t going to use this right away. There are only so many single target spells priest have access to in standard at the moment.

But I imagine it would be useful given the right spells in the future.

    July 27, 2018 at 7:12 am

Does the deathrattle count if you summon it with Shadow Essence or resurrect it with twilights call? Cause if so it seems good

    • GameDJJD
      July 27, 2018 at 7:14 am

It’s always a Deathrattle minion that died, doesn’t matter if it was resummoned with it’s own effect or not.

    • GameDJJD
      July 27, 2018 at 7:16 am

Or do you mean the Ressurrect Card as trigger for the Deathrattle? Because it’s not a Spell you cast on that minion. You have to target that minion with a spell for that .

Silence heavy world? You mean the 1-2 spellbreakers some decks have?

It’s like Cairne Bloodhoof. And Cairne was played a lot.
With +1 Attack it’s even better.
Yes ofc you need a Spell for it, but already 1 Power Word: Shield makes it worth it.

WAS is a pretty important distinction to make. Cairne is classic and thus is still available to be played, yet isn’t anymore. This card will have to be able to be consistently resurrected twice to be better than Cairne, and even then may not be good enough to see consistent play.

      It’s like cairne
      except worse
      and nobody plays cairne

Worse than it looks. Horrible tempo play. It’s only decent vs control decks without silence/polymorph/hex and they’re not many. Besides, atm priests don’t use many buffs or spells that this card could benefit from

They told me the same thing about Stalagg and Feugen and they are still great in my quest priest.
Very few people use hex and polymorph these days, even the silence, and nobody hold it inhand with the idea of “Maybe he will play this card in late”, they waste it on taunts/another card.
Also this card copied or resurrected can be very strong.

Basically a better version of sherazim… pretty nice!

In a silence heavy world, not sure how good this is.

There always seems to be a silence at the worst times, ya know?

Silence is always a bad argument. Silence will always be a thing and players should have a sense of how many there are in a deck and bait them appropriately.

You forgett polymorph and hex which are common in mage and shaman. Also there are many ways to remove a minion without triggering its deathrattle.

I actually don’t forget either of those cards because they are a staple of both of those classes. It still makes a bad argument. There are lots of cards that make good targets for silence effect cards and dismissing this card because of said effects is naive.

This card wants to outvalue your opponent. A minion which can resummon itself is good against control decks. Sadly, most control decks got good removel. Against aggro, this card is to bad simply because it’s effect has no impact on the board.
It can be a good card because it’s a “unlimited” 5/5 minion. But you will need to cast a spell on it which costs mana. Playing it on turn 6 isn’t good without coin + spell.
I don’t think it will see play.

@LKGamet I don’t think it will see play either until there are more single target spell options for priest.

But that wasn’t what I was arguing. So many cards that see play right now can be ruined with silence. Saying “but silence” is bad card value insight.

Of course. Because of it the silence heavy Meta, Warlocks and Priests do not run Twilight Drake, Rogues do run Edwin. Hunters don’t run ANY deathrattles …
