Emeriss Card Review

This is like a cruel joke. I see an awesome new, high cost Legendary with an exciting effect. And it’s a Dragon on top of that! Then I notice that it’s Hunter, not Neutral. Welp.

Hunter is like the worst class for this kind of card. It’s painfully slow, costs 10 mana, has no immediate board impact, doesn’t really synergize with Hunter play style or cards…

Yes, doubling the stats of all of the minions in your hand is very powerful. But when playing Hunter, even if the game lasts that long, you won’t likely have too many minions in your hand anyway. Even the slower Hunter lists like Kathrena Winterwisp decks rarely have that sort of staying power.

A card like that also has insane combo potential. For example, you can double Leeroy’s Attack to 12, making it a perfect set-up for even a simple combo with Faceless Manipulator. And that’s honestly the only way I could see Hunter using it – in some sort of combo deck. “Control Hunter” is not a thing and I don’t even know if Control Hunter would really want to play it anyway.

This card is super flashy and the effect is very cool, but it’s like a classic Legendary trap. You look at it, you think “INSANE VALUE”, but then you play it in game, most of the games end before you get to Turn 10. In games which don’t end pre-Turn 10, you often can’t play it if you’re under any kind of pressure, because it’s a 10 mana 8/8 that does nothing immediately. Sometimes you can’t play it, because you don’t have anything meaningful to buff (or combo pieces when you talk about a combo deck). Sometimes you play it, but your combo still doesn’t work, because your opponent sees your Emeriss and knows what’s coming. And they play Voidlord (or even better, Bloodreaver Gul'dan) and you’re screwed. It looks like one of those cards that works in 1 out of 10 games or something.

I’m not completely dismissing the possibility of Combo Hunter built around this card, but so far it looks unlikely.

Card rating: 2/10 (unless some mysterious Combo Hunter deck will be built around it, but I just can’t see it)

Wild, Bright-eyed Scout and Giants… if you get lucky and pull this with the scout so it’s 5 mana, you could be dropping a couple of 16/16 minions on the board on turn 6. After that I’m out of ideas unless there’s some new Dragon synergy incoming.

Don’t forget about naga, doesn’t work until turn 10, sure, but that’s still 13 power on board instead of just 8 which leaves you much less dead.

I’m a sucker for big epic cards (epic as in big and cool, not rarity). The art is great and it just fits in the lore of this expansion. Probably not competitive but it looks like a lot of fun. This name is supposed to be fun no?

I agree. I am down for just fun cards a lot of times. It probably wont be a super competative card but it will be really fun. Just make some crazy big stuff because you can. I mean ideally play this after you been deathstalker rexxar for a few turns. Have some big taunts on board for safett then drop emeriss to maoe your opponent say. WHAT THE HELL COULD THEY HAVE? i could have a 12/20 going for your face friend. Whatchu gonna do? It will be a highlight card and i like those

This card reminds me of Sindragosa (im sure i spelled that wrong) High mana, value, “do nothing” dragon. I want big hunter or control hunter to work, and who knows, maybe one day itll have the pieces it needs.

Art is awesome though, cant wait to see the gold version.

I see a lot of repeated grammar mistakes in your posts recently that make me think your first language is French or Spanish, or at the very least not English. Since you’re repeating the same mistakes over and over, I thought it might be worth telling you how some of these rules work, because you don’t seem to be aware of them.

First of all, you keep saying stuff like “if it will work”. In English, after if or when in a conditional statement, you should never use the future tense. You do need to use the future tense for the second part of the statement, however. For example: “If it works the way I think, it will be good.” If you don’t believe the condition will happen, you should use the past tense for the condition and would in the second part. For example: “If it worked the way you think, it would be too good.” This is the case even if it applies only in the future.

The second thing you get wrong is using “the”, thinking it applies to one word, when you’re mistakenly applying it to another. When you say “the Leroy’s attack”, you think you’re saying “the attack of Leroy”, but what you’re actually saying is “the attack of the Leroy”, which as you can imagine makes no sense. He’s not the Leroy, he’s just Leroy. Therefore, you should say “Leroy’s attack” and drop the “the”.

Finally, another thing a lot of non-native speakers get wrong is composite verbs and their associated nouns and adjectives. You wrote “set-up”, but these never include dashes. The rule is that if it’s a verb, it’s written as two particles (set up) while if it’s a noun or an adjective, it’s written as one word (setup). This pretty much applies to any other case you could think of.

That said, I love your articles. Keep up the good work!

      Grammar nazi at work.
      XD

We should make a sort of petition to obtain an old latin version of this site.

(Sorry for my eventually written mistakes)

      March 29, 2018 at 11:53 am

Hey, thanks for your comment. Just like you’ve noticed, I’m not a native English speaker (I’m from Poland, not France or Spain, by the way). My English is mostly self-taught (this dash is correct, right?), and even though I think that I’m doing a solid job and I’ve improved over the last few years, there is still lots to work on.

The main issue is that grammar in those two languages (Polish and English) is completely different, and I sometimes tend to translate sentences one to one. Sometimes it works, sometimes Something that works in Polish might not sound well in English.

As for the future tense after conditional statement, I’ve never heard about it and so far no one pointed that mistake to me. I will try to not repeat it in the future.

When it comes to dash in set-up, when I’m not sure if something is right I usually google it. I wasn’t sure how to write it, but google didn’t fix the dash version, and I even found it in the dictionary (https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/set-up), so I thought that it should be okay.

And finally, that bloody “the”. The whole concept behind “the” makes no sense to me at all. And I’m serious, I’ve tried learning where should I exactly use it many times and it appears that I’m still putting it in wrong places. Most of the time I use it when it “sounds” right, but as you probably understand, something that sounds right to me might not necessarily be right.

Thank you. Those reviews are especially prone to mistakes, as I want to get them out as quickly as possible, while the card is still “fresh”. And believe me that I’m doing my best to master the language, but it’s a bit tough without someone to proofread everything I write and point out my mistakes. I can read my article 5 times and I still not realize that something is wrong when I think that it’s in fact correct.

English isn’t my first language either and I could see that you’re making an effort to get it right, so I figured you wouldn’t take this as an insult and rather use this info to get better. I totally understand that these card reviews need to be out quickly and that means more mistakes.

Anyway, like I said, I love the reviews so keep up the good work and don’t let English slow you down.

Given a fairly powerful legendary dragon for Hunter, I’m excited now to the see potential for a Dragon Hunter archetype. So far all we have for Dragon-Holding mechanics in standard is Scaleworm, but Scaleworm also provides beast synergy opportunities for an early game tempo/control play. If we get more Dragon-Holding cards, I could see Control Hunter becoming Dragon Hunter! A very interesting opportunity for a Dual-Minion Type deck, and also possibly a place for Nightmare Amalgam!

    • Dirgander
      March 29, 2018 at 10:24 am

Also, because of the Dragon tag it can still work with Kathrena Winterwisp without stopping Emeriss’ battlecry from triggering.

    March 29, 2018 at 10:14 am

There are ways to build a slow and controlling hunter, especially in wild. More of a meme thing, than actually competitive, but it can be done. I could see Emeriss find a use in a board control hunter, one also playing Ysera for excample.
    – The question then becomes do you hold Ysera to double her stats, or do you play her first so she can begin filling your hand with Emerald Drakes and Laughing Sisters.
    – Of course you are going to play Deathstalker Rexxar as well.

I am not going to completely dismiss Emeriss, even though she is more of a fun card, than a useful card. I very much doubt she will see use in ladder at all, certainly not in standard ladder. Wild ladder? Not at the top.

  11. Potential?!?
    March 29, 2018 at 9:50 am

So, do you guys not see the amazing potential this has for hunter? As you play the death knight you can definitely survive till turn ten while filling your hand with powerful build a beasts. Blizzard plans to fill Hunter cards with rush, for board control, so they can survive (plus all these cards are even so keep that in mind). But if you don’t wanna run an even deck you can stay alive with rush/Deathstalker Rexar, then use faceless manipulator + Leeroy for 24 damage. But we still don’t know what Blizzard has planned for Hunter until we know all the new cards coming out. Just saying…

  12. Soup And Salad
    March 29, 2018 at 9:03 am

This card is simply too slow. If it had taunt, it would be at least three times as playable. Otherwise, this is a win-more card at best. Given this card’s high cost, it could’ve been a neutral minion without too many issues I can think of.
Hand buffing is simply too slow of a mechanic to make viable generally. It did work a bit in Paladin, but their hand buff cards hit everything in your hand, which is like this card in that regard. However, it comes out too late for it to really affect the game in a meaningful way at that point.

Hunter could easily build a deck full out good tempo cards and this way he can survive to turn tens and play the “schrondinger emeriss”,your opponent always will prevent a 24 damage from doble Leeroy that you actually dont cast slots with, and will prevent it spend cards and a entire turn that he could be agressive, then you finally have you powerfull hand full out rush minions, primordial drake…just the fact that you could have a charge combo in hand is the enough to force your opponent to not gain tempo in their turn cause he is spending mana with weak taunts and get healing, hearthstone isnt just basic maths,is psicology too! (Sorry english errors, its cause im brazilian)

I guess this is average in standard (control hunter has always been shit for LONG time), but surely this is broken in arena lol.

  23. Tricksterking
    March 29, 2018 at 7:23 am

Holy shit, I used to play a pretty good control hunter deck that used dragons, curator and c’thun and it could go all the way to fatigue so I know control hunter can work. They have introduced some good cards for the deck in this set ad it is about time Hunter got the dragon synergy it needed. This card is insane for pretty much any cards it hits and can replace the c’thun in the new version of my deck!

Alternatively you could run this is a slower OTK style deck where you focus on controlling the board using rush minions and heal using neutral cards and use this card to buff cards like Leeroy and King Krush.

I think people under estimate control hunter because they haven’t experimented with it enough. As a hunter main, all I do is make wacky hunter decks using strange cards figuring out what works well in this class and what doesn’t. The dragon’s offer board clears which hunter need and they can easily get to turn 10 using the tools available.

Over all I love this card, it adds a new win condition to hunter and helps push the control/midranged front. I give it (a some what biased) 5 stars and I look forward to using this card and proving haters wrong!

      • Tricksterking
        March 29, 2018 at 12:30 pm

Hunter doesn’t really need that much dragon support since the cards are strong by themselves. They can easily carry the late game and provide hunter’s with AOE which is a big thing they lack. Since League of explorers I have been able to create pretty high value focused hunter decks that generate a lot of value into the late game (that was the time I started getting more creative since set rotations were announced).

Intresting card but can be only good in one hunter deck that never in history of our game preformed well – Control Hunter. This can not be played in today’s meta, but with reali good rush removal to control the board, develop beast synergy, rexxar(or alleria) could survive to turn 10 when they would be able to drop this card. But question is how many minions will be in hand when Emeriss is played? We will se how good this is but if they don’t give it support it won’t be nothing more than meme card.

You can discover only cards viable for your class. So, no hunter’s dragons in priest’s hand

  31. Helioshadow
    March 29, 2018 at 7:04 am

I mean, if you don’t die right away, they’re probably dead from a 16 Damage King Krush next turn. Then again, it’s a bit difficult to survive that turn; it doesn’t have any instant board presence, no Taunt, etc. Funnily enough, it’s pretty close to Temporus in that you’re probably dead next turn, but you’re able to win shortly after if they can’t kill you. Or if you’re playing a more control deck, just slap down a giant Taunt that they can’t get rid of on the turn after Emeriss (Sleepy Dragon and Primordial Drake come to mind).

And on the off-chance that someone gets this off with a Brann Bronzebeard proc on a King Krush… That’s disgusting.

I really want to quit Hearthstone, because it is a time sink, but these cards are so interesting, even though this card is so overpowered.
I don’t know how viable a controll hunter can be, despite that it is easy to see that This card is broken.
    Any card becomes redicolous:
    -8/24 Ysera
    -10/18 Soggoth
    -16/16 King crush
    -6/4 fairy dragon
Also all buffs get doubled, so if they already have a 10 attack leeroy, then it is a 20 attack charge minion for 5 mana, which is 40 with faceless.

    • Roberto
      March 29, 2018 at 7:46 am

Or if you have a 35/47 penguin it is a 78 dmg in 2 turns! INSANE!

If this 10 mana 8/8 that you have to play from your hand and gives ur opponent a free Time Warp (u skip a turn to do nothing on the board) it’s OP………well, Thanks god you don’t design cards for this game 😀

admittedly it is concerning thinking about getting to turn 10 with turn 5 voidlords and turn 6 spiteful summoners into ysharrj pulling their grand archivist. so yes, hunter does have some steep competition. but i’m thinking about the minions worth buffing. i instantly thought of sleepy dragon as an 8/24 taunt for 9. dies to removal sure, but that’s how big a different this makes for the right minion.

    Keep your “cancerous” aggro and Mid-Range Hunter;

Semi Spell or other Control Hunter is where the fun’s at; this with a low mana cost Zombeast with Charge/Taunt/Lifesteal can make for a devastating setup.

  45. Shelby
    March 29, 2018 at 6:15 am

Doesn’t have taunt or interact with the board immediately. Which means you need to pick your places to play this in much the same way you have to setup to drop Ysera.

Doesn’t seem good – would be very good if it was an understated midrange card (4 mana 2/2 or something), but anything that costs 10, doesn’t interact with the board immediately, and you can’t ramp to (IE Druid) is not good.

Finally got our meme Hunter legendary! Aggro and Midrange Hunter wants to have finished the game by Turn 6-7. If the game extends to Turn 10, you are in top-deck mode looking for a Kill Command or similar. You won’t have many minions left in your hand, and this only puts an 8/8 on board the turn it’s played (quite some tempo loss). It could be great value if Control Hunter were a thing. The most similar thing we have to Control Hunter is Spell Hunter, which runs no minions. And I can’t imagine having more than one Zombeast in hand in the lategame… I’m thinking a best case scenario with Tundra Rhino and other beasts in hand, then you can close games if there’s not too many Taunts. But I honestly can’t see this legendary being your win condition, with all that I have explained. Ergo, meme-tier legendary. I hope I’m wrong, I like to play Hunter.

As long as you can get at least 3 minions that are all decent stats on their own, this card is insane
