Wing Blast Card Review

Remember an old, BRM card called Dragon's Breath? It’s like a much, much better version of it, except the fact that you can’t use it on your opponent’s face. Still, this is a very powerful card.

At the base, 4 mana for 4 damage to a minion is bad. It’s a more expensive Shadow Bolt, which is a mediocre card already. However, once you meet this card’s condition, it suddenly becomes quite powerful. 1 mana for 4 minion damage is way different – it’s a very high tempo and super powerful removal. Remember how good Arcane Blast with Spell Damage was? Or how high tempo an upgraded version of Lesser Jasper Spellstone can be? Exactly.

Right now I see two decks that would want this card. First one is Midrange Hunter. Even though it’s pretty aggressive for a Midrange deck, it still wants to fight for the board control. You can e.g. trade one minion and clear a second one with this card for almost free. Or maybe trade your small minion + this into a bigger Taunt. When playing the deck, you’re often forced to use Kill Command to clear minions, while you would prefer to keep it for the burn damage. Wing Blast is much better for killing minions – no Beast requirement, 1 vs 3 mana, the only downside is the 4 instead of 5 damage, which might make a difference quite often, but it’s still better for the board control.

And the second deck I would see this being played in is obviously Spell Hunter. While the deck is losing Barnes + Y'Shaarj, Rage Unbound combo, it doesn’t mean that it will be completely dead. Every strong spell is a big buff to Spell Hunter, and this is exactly that. Activating the condition shouldn’t be hard. While you don’t run lots of minions, between the cards that summon minions (e.g. Unleash the Hounds, Lesser Emerald Spellstone) and the fact that you remove stuff often with weapons/other spells, this will be a high tempo removal for the deck.

Why no Control Hunter you might ask? I mean, if Control Hunter was a thing, then this card would probably be played in it. But, again, unless they absolutely go nuts on that theme and push it hard, it’s not going to become viable.

While this card is not flashy or anything, it just feels very powerful. I would be very, and I mean VERY surprised if this didn’t see any play.

Card rating: 9/10

It looks good… but it also looks worse than flanking strike, which isn’t even a core card in hunter.

Solid card… I run a Quest Hunter deck and this will be a great inclusion since it will be easy to trigger the discounted cost even if it is losing my one drops. I run few beast in the deck and because of that Kill Command isn’t always boosted so this would be better at least in my deck.

I think Quest Hunter is going to be a thing for sure at least for a while. They can draw their whole deck in a matter of a few turns sometimes and kill off dozens of tiny one drops making this an easy card to trigger along with the other synergy they got (Toxmonger and the 3 mana neutral that adds two one drops to you hand) This deck could be one of the better ones honestly.

Hunter card that cant go face 0/5 terrible

Seriously though, while I think this card is good in a vacuum, I really dont get all the hype. No current hunter decks needs something like this, which means it needs a new type of Hunter deck to be good. Think of it this way. People are comparing this to jasper spellstone, because, you know, its a useful 1 mana deal 4 (ok, not exactly, but this card isnt exactly 1 mana deal 4 either). But that card is useful in Druid because you put it in a deck that cares a lot about the late game and its good early removal so you dont die. Hunter is historically the class that plays those early game cards that slower decks try to remove. The slowest Hunter deck is spell Hunter, and that decklist, I think, is too tight to fit this in it. So unless this is the set the mythical “Control Hunter” makes its debut, I really cant see the hype.

Are you like dumb or something? You Said this card wouldn’t do good in any current hunter decks. In case you weren’t aware there may or may not be some expansions rotating out. So saying this card wouldn’t do good in the current hunter just makes it invalid. having a 1 cost spell that deals 4 damage to a minion is pretty much good in any deck. Hunter has Unleash the Hounds Which is already use to trade. So that a 4 mana deal 4 damage and summon a bunch of doggies -1. This is one example. But what if you don’t have Unleash the hounds. You got your other minions probably on the field. I mean what hunter doesn’t want to play cheap spells that kills things doesn’t love a 1 mana deal 4 damage to a minion.

The biggest hunter problem is card draw. Without card draw mechanic for hunter this control style hunter deck is gone be terrible.

Doesn’t have the Beast tag. Utterly useless.

Exactly. It’s called Wing Blast so i suppose it should at least own the Dragon tag. The picture also indicates that it’s meant to hurt Fish and frogs, thus being useless against Dude paladin or Cubelock.

This can easily be two mana deal four damage to a minion rather easily and it won’t be game over if you have to play it for the full cost. Really good card. Simple as that.

You’re misreading it. It costs (1) mana if another minion dies this round before the card is played, not 1 less.

It’s actually a really well designed minion removal card for Hunter, which is something it lacks a bit in standard.

Man, I love seeing this card. Thanks Blizzard for pepping up hunter bit by bit, even adding variation within the class. Great job there. It also won’t break the game, so that’s a good thing, too. Nerf down warlock a bit, care a bit more about those dumpster classes and everyone is fine.

    I’ll go with the 9/10

Another card for my Genn Reno deck. We already have Rexxar and more good cards, so just 10 more viable tempo cards that are also good late game and a good way to handle giants will make a new tier 1 deck (hopefully).

So, you are cutting the amount of playable cards in half by Genn, and then again by Reno? Ambitious^^

You are 100% correct. Especially when hunter’s best cards are at the 3-drop slot. I would choose the word “memer”, but “ambitious” works as well

I really don’t get the hype.

I think a lot of people here underestimate meeting the condition. It’s not gonna be that easy and/or convenient to do a lot of the time. And for 4 mana wouldn’t you rather have Flanking Strike (a card which didn’t become core in midrange hunter as some people thought either)? And even if it’s 1 mana – wouldn’t you rather have a fucking Hunter’s Mark instead (that does essentially the same except for infinite damage instead of 4?)

But the main issue is as always with hunter – with no card draw to speak of the class can’t afford to play removal cards like this that doesn’t have the option of going face.

Hunter’s Mark doesn’t do the same, those are two completely different cards. If Hunter’s Mark was infinite damage, then it would see play in literally every deck ever. Dealing damage is much better than reducing health to 1 in most of the cases, because Hunter’s mark is never a 1 for 1 removal, you always have to invest extra resources (1/1 minion or Candleshot charge at best, but it’s not always that easy) to clear the target. With straight up damage, you don’t.

A very common scenario – your opponent has 2 or more minions on the board, you kill one with Eaglehorn Bow. Using Hunter’s Mark on the second one is pointless, because it’s not removing it.

Hunter’s Mark is best at dealing with single big threats. This is great against boards with multiple Midrange minions, against decks like the current Murloc Paladin, Zoo Warlock, in the Hunter mirrors etc.

I really hope this become a mechanic for Hunter. The idea of a Hunter getting rewarded for killing prey is such an amazing idea, and I think that really helps hunter actually remove minions rather than going face.

Seems good… I wonder if this is worth it in an aggro-midrange where you can lose one of your little guys to make this cheap, kill that taunt, and finish them off. Just seems very versatile, in the realm of Jasper Spell Stone, but easier to do 4 damage for 1, but can’t do 6, ever.

Hunter is looking like it will have a lot of tools to build something viable in the new meta.
