Carnivorous Cube Card Review

Now there’s an interesting card! And quite powerful, too. It’s costed at the magical 5 mana, which means you can often play it alongside other cards in the same turn and it comes with a decent body. It’s not great, but it’s alright. Obviously, the real power comes from the card’s text box. First off, to get the obvious out of the way, it has amazing synergy with Deathrattle cards. It interacts with them two times – once serving as an on-demand trigger and the second time, when it dies, it doubles the value of your Deathrattle minion, getting up to three potential deathrattle triggers! Needless to say how powerful that can be, especially as more good deathrattles enter Standard… or in Wild, with cards like Sylvanas Windrunner or Sneed's Old Shredder. While on the topic of Deathrattles, it’s worth mentioning the interactions with N'Zoth, The Corruptor – it will summon all copies of Carnivorous Cube‘s meal that have managed to die, however it will also summon the Cube itself and while its Deathrattle won’t be active this time around, it is a very solid minion to get for free, especially in Standard where N’Zoth makes board states more centered on value rather than stats.

Aside from Deathrattle cards, the Cube has other interesting applications. It’s an extremely slow card, do not fool yourselves, however it provides amazing value just about anyway you use it. First of all, it’s a form of card advantage, essentially duplicating a minion you have on the board. It works similarly with End-of-Turn (EoT) effects and static auras in almost the same way it works with Deathrattles, so there are those cards to look out for. In addition to that, it can be used as a way to make messy board states for those minion-centric battles that the zoo-style and arena decks tend to find themselves in – value trading a minion and having it eaten by the Cube can be pretty good, especially when Carnivorous Cube itself can’t be left unkilled because at 4/6 it is a threatening card.

All of that being said, it is a bit of a double-edged sword of a card. The amazing potential it holds comes at the price of being extremely slow and keeping the card minion it ate inside itself. Firstly, if the meta isn’t the holy control meta you can hear reddit talk about all the time (and let’s face it, that never happens, and for good reason), most often when you play Cube you will die very shortly after, unless you are hitting one of its prime targets. Second, if the meta is at a place where Carnivorous Cube is at its best, that means the meta is slow. And in a slow meta, the hard removal you barely see these days will come back – the Saps, Hexes, Polymorphs and Entombs (Wild) of the world are lying in wait. Most of the time if your Cube gets Polymorphed you will lose the game.

    This card seems really powerful.
It actually is.But the problem is its too slow.
The minions you have to combo this with are all above 6 mana.Obviously you need to destroy some deathrattle minion to have value.Otherwise its just a huge tempo loss destroying one of your minions and waiting for a couple of turns to be able to summon two copies of them. Thats too slow and tou ll probably lose bu then.
Not to mention that even if this card saw play then people would run more silences so think of the huge loss destroying your own minion and then having Cube silenced. So this card after the meta settles would only work with huge deathrattle tha instantly do something like Carne or Sylvanas.

Comparing it to Moat lurker which I am currently using for a kind of meme Moat Lurker, Hadronox & Marin the Fox deck this shit is broken. Costs less, better stats, resummons 2 copies.

I know this will never be viable and/or good, but I’m just imagining the meme that is using this on anomalus…

On a realer note there’s some stellar synergies with this card. Obsidian statue is a great pick, especially after trading once or twice. Of course, really good deathrattle minions like Tirion Savannah highmane (that’s a lot of 2/2’s) are good picks for this effect, or just about any divine shield minion (after its attack).
I don’t think this will be an absolute game-changer, but a solid card all around

When i think about how this card is best used i always think about Doomguard, trade him into one or two things, he has little life left, destroy him and in a turn or two you get two copies to SMorc.

And when you think about it, three Doomguards are not ba at all with the warlock deathknight :):)

Play Umbra with a devilsaur egg already on board, play Carnivorous cube on the egg and it spawns 3 5/5 hatchlings and 2 more eggs. Thats 9 mana for a full board

    • mike
      November 11, 2017 at 10:23 pm

Thats crazy and even if your opponent clears the board you still got the deathrattle hatchlings
(unless your opponent silences all then dragonfires)

Play this combo in warlock, then Void Terror on the newly summoned eggs; 3 mana for a 3/9 and 2 5/5’s? Yes please. When the Cube dies, then you can do it again.

I’m unsure if deathrattle is a deck archetype that will ever work really well. If, however, it will, this card will be an immediate staple in them. 5 mana 4/6 is not horrible by any means, and duplicating a friendly minion is a nice resource advantage play.

I could see this in eggZoo, or even in DR priest if it gets off.

Does not have to be played with Deathrattle effects really. Yes its nice but even to help save one of your Big Minions Like Rag, Y’Shaarj, TLK, the list goes on. I more so see this as a way to ether make a larger army of big creatures in any formate or to trigger deathrattles. Also for Wild Syl will be great with this.

I rate this card 4 stars. I believe this card will find a home in a Tier 2 deck of some sort, whether it be Deathrattle, or just a lot of big minions. The one thing keeping it from five stars is that it is a 4/6 that destroys a friendly minion with no immediate impact.

    November 5, 2017 at 12:47 am

So does it still summon the 2 minions if it is played a 2nd time on the first played Carnivorous Cube? Thus 2minions plus 2Cubes on the board after attacks. Hmm charge combo should be interesting as well

    • Boysano
      November 5, 2017 at 12:51 am

I meant 2 minions plus 1 cube on board which will copy 2 more cubes.

if i got your question correct, your asking if you use “carnivorous cube A” on “card” then use “carnivorous cube B” on “carnivorous cube A” will the 2 copies of “carnivorous cube A” that spawn from “carnivorous cube B” still spawn two copies of “card” when they die?

and the quick answer in no. moat lurker is essentially the same card. you can check there. as of now there are no cards that retain effects after resurrection. just like how moat lurkers revived by N’zoth do nothing upon death

I assume this gets cost reduction from Corpse Widow; making it three mana? Can someone confirm this, its death rattle can at times not be triggered that’s why I’m wondering.

    • PandaWolf525
      November 4, 2017 at 9:03 pm

Yes Corpse Widow will let this cost only 3 Mana while you have a Corpse Widow under your control.

I was gonna say I don’t want to be a dick, but I guess i kindan do, man some people are dumb, some seem to think this kills a friendly minion then when it dies it summons 2 copies of itself :p

    This. Looks. AMAZING.

There are so many Wombo Combos you can do with this, and I wouldn’t be surprised if at least ONE deck manages to pick this up. There are so many good possibilities with this.

What the hell this card is insane
great body for a 5 mana card and imagine devouring Cairne then playing double “Play Dead” and summon 4 Cairnes
Imagine doing this with Tirion (assuming it lives next turn)
and then you pair it up with N’zoth
Hell even leper gnome can deal a lot of damage

Seems like one of the best cards in the expansion so far. Hunter, any deathrattle card and any 1/1 copy of a minion have immense synergy with this card. It is not a bad body to summon with n’zoth either (with extra deathrattles from its deathrattle). It can also be used with loothoarders, thalnos etc for extra 2 draw.

This card could just make make quest-anduin priest viable after raza/jades rotates out.

I love 4/6 bodies in general in this meta, plays around dragonfire, swipe/heropower, backstab/SI, doomguard, UI and death/pain.

Like Moat Lurker, I would guess the battlecry is what defines what he summons. The battlecry may as well say “Destroy a friendly minion to gain ‘Deathrattle: Summon 2 copies of that minion'”. It always technically has a deathrattle, but it won’t summon anything when they die after being summoned directly from death.

While you’re absolutely correct, they may have been saying the deathrattle minions summoned by this card’s deathrattle, which would be resummoned

Deathrattle hunter new tier 1 deck?

But for real I could see this carrying deathrattle hunter into a tier 3, maybe tier 2 deck. Play dead suddenly seems pretty good, maybe you eat a savannah highmane, play dead, trade it away, and you got yourself 4 highmanes. This card will either be 1/5 or 5/5.

    And I chose 5/5

Interesting take on the moatlurker. Maybe potential in a silence or evolve deck

    • Debhole4PREZ
      November 3, 2017 at 3:14 pm

It can only eat friendly minions, so no way will this work with silence or evolve. But I’m pretty sure you just misread the card.

i think by that he means to kill his own minion kill the carnivoros cube and then evolve it with thrall or something like that
