VR Version of Hearthstone Prototyped During “Free your Mind” Event, but We Most Likely Will Never See It

Wouldn’t you just love to play Hearthstone in real life? Enter a warm, cozy tavern filled with other players, sit across one, pull out your deck and just start battling him? Well, some devs at Blizzard thought the same when inventing a… Hearthstone VR prototype!

In the PowerUp’s interview with Hearthstone Designer Dave Kosak and Lead VFX Artist Hadidjah Chamberlain, the latter has shared some interesting tidbits about a virtual reality version of our favorite card game.

During annual “Free your Mind” event, which is sort of a hackathon event, where developers can let their imagination run wild and come up with some interesting projects. One of them was – in fact – a Hearthstone in VR. Since only two devs worked on it, and they only had two weeks, all you could do was walk around the Tavern, sit at the table, throw your cards… and even flip the table. Imagine how often that would happen in actual games of Hearthstone!

However, I’m afraid that you should not get your hopes up. In the same interview, Dave Kosak mentioned that it has been discussed internally, but ultimately players would probably prefer to swipe their fingers over devices. Later, he also mentioned that he didn’t want to talk about this small prototype, because then everyone would want to see it. And yes, we absolutely DO want to see it! Please?

Still, if you want to experience Hearthstone in VR today, you can always try it out in Tabletop Simulator. There are, in fact, multiple “working” versions of the game, and you can even build your own. I did try one a while ago, and it was one of the most clunkiest card game experiences I had, but at the same time it was something different.
