Right when you thought that Reno Mage is the only version of Mage you will see, well there is one nobody is paying attention and has been here for a while now, and that is old reliable Freeze Mage. Freeze Mage is in a great spot in the meta right now with there being more aggro and reno decks then there are control decks that completely obliterated this deck. Player be aware that this deck is the toughest deck to play in the game, it just requires so much thought to play a single game. One misplay and you could be done. Freeze Mage is great against Renolock as it has enough damage to where you can kill them as long as they are below or at 26 health. The average health I have had for my opponents when I kill them has been around 25 or 26. This deck has enough damage and support to last you forever. Volcanic Potion  is a great addition to the deck as it helps with the nasty and rough Aggro Shaman and Pirate Warrior match ups. It is also great when used in a combo with Flamestrike or Blizzard

The tough part against reno is to make your opponent not play Reno. As long as you have ice block, blizzard, frost nova, or doomsayer you can stall them long enough to where they will not play Reno which opens up the win as long as you have the right amount and the Thaurissan discount.

Here is the math for lethal and just for knowing what you have and how much mana:

  • 2 Frostbolt (2 mana each, 3 damage with freeze each)= 6 damage, 4 mana
  • 2 Ice lance (1 mana each, 4 damage with freeze each)= 8 damage, 2 mana
  • 2 Fireball (4 mana each, 6 damage each)= 12 damage, 8 mana
  • 2 Forgotten Torch (3 mana each, 3 damage each with 6 damage roaring shuffled in deck)= 6 damage, 6 mana
  • 2 Roaring Torch (3 mana each, 6 damage)= 12 damage, 6 mana
  • Total mana for all spells without discount= 26
  • Total Damage for all spells without bloodmage= 44 damage

With Bloodmage Thalnos and Thaurissan discount:

  • Bloodmage Thalnos (1 mana, +1 spell damage)
  • 2 Frostbolt (1 mana each, 4 damage each)= 8 damage, 2 mana
  • 2 Ice Lance (0 mana each, 5 damage each as long as target is frozen)= 10 damage, 0 mana (with freeze effect from frostbolt)
  • 2 fireball (3 mana each, 7 damage each)= 14 damage, 6 mana
  • 2 Forgotten Torch (2 mana each, 4 damage each)= 8 damage, 4 mana
  • 2 Roaring Torch (2 mana each, 7 damage each)= 14 damage, 4 mana
  • Total Mana for spells with discount= 16 mana
  • Total damage for spells with Bloodmage= 54 damage

You need at least 2 frostbolt, 1 ice lance, bloodmage, 2 fireballs, or a Roaring Torch for complete lethal on turn 10. You may not have this exact combination, but there are multiples where you can add up to almost if not exactly to 30 damage on 1 turn.

Mulligan: You want Arcane Intellect, Ice Block (Aggro), Novice Engineer, Loot Hoarder, Ice Lance, Frostbolt, Forgotten Torch, Volcanic potion (Aggro).

The main gameplan is to draw your damage and then discount with Thaurissan before you die if it is not too late. If you have Thaurissan and freeze spells in hand by turn 6 or 7 you can basically stall out and win the game as long as you get the draws you need with a little help from RNG.

Alexstrasza  should only be used in aggro or control macthups and not in Reno matches. Alex will pressure your Reno opponent to Reno therefore hurting your chances of getting lethal, so do your best to keep your opponents life around 25 or 24.

Use the freeze spells Frost Nova and Blizzard accurately and efficiently to stall the game to favor you. You want to start freezing around turn 6 or 7 so you can draw more and not have to worry about dying to the field.

Well hopefully this guide has helped you and I wish you luck in the Ladder. Stay Frosty my friends.
