Blizzard has just announced the next Hearthstone expansion. CATACLYSM is the first set of Year of the Scarab (2026) and it looks very exciting. We’ve only seen a small portion of the cards so far,
So let’s start with card reveals. The reveal season begins tomorrow (February 10) and ends on March 3. And this time the reveals will be quite different than usual. Instead of many content creators/websites revealing a few cards each, we’ll be getting 5 card reveal streams that showcase 2-3 classes each + a final card reveal stream that culminates the entire reveal season. Each of those streams will feature multiple players (including RegisKillbin, Thijs, NoHandsGamer, Feno, BabyBear, McBanterFace, Gaby, Kibler and many more) discussing the cards and a guest dev talking more about design and answering their questions. There will still be a few reveals on the official socials and done by some creators, but most of the cards will be showcased during the aforementioned streams.
It’s important to note that CATACLYSM will have 135 cards instead of the usual 145. Blizzard has decided to cut out 10 Neutral cards from the set (mostly Neutral Commons). Instead, the devs will offer more extra free cards from in-game events throughout the course of the reveal season and the expansion itself. I honestly don’t mind it, given that most of the Neutral Commons were “filler” cards anyway, so getting rid of them won’t exactly change anything. If the Event cards are more interesting then it’s a win-win situation for the players.
There will be A LOT of opportunities to grab some freebies before and after CATACLYSM’s launch. Free login rewards, in-game events, Legendary Quest chain, Pre-Release Brawl, Twitch drops, and the official “Rally the Dragonflight” Online Event. In the last one, Blizzard asks players to sign up with their email and do different tasks / interact with the game on social media to unlock free Legendary Ebyssian and two Signature copies of Envoy of the End. And, probably most importantly for new and returning players, Blizzard has announced so-called “Trial Cards”. Starting with Patch 35.0 (March 10) and lasting throughout the entire CATACLYSM expansion, players will have access to trial versions of entire Into the Emerald Dream and The Lost City of Un’Goro expansions. They will be able to use any of the cards in decks without any limitations – even including Golden cards. It’s clear that Blizzard wants to bring as many people as possible for the launch. It’s unclear whether it’s a one-time thing or if they will continue to offer other trial cards in the future (as usual, it probably depends on the results).
Additionally, players who already own most of those cards will get extra cosmetic rewards – Signature versions of Ysera, Emerald Aspect for Emerald Dream and Endbringer Umbra for Lost City. The achievements for those are called “Only Missing a Few”, but it’s still unclear what it means exactly (how many cards can you miss and still get them to be more specific).
