(Live Now) Hearthstone 33.0 Patch Notes – The Lost City of Un’Goro, Pre-Release Brawl, Pets, Arena Reward Updates, and More!

Update: The patch is now live on both PC and mobile. Enjoy!

Blizzard just published 33.0 patch notes! The update launches tomorrow (July 1). It’s a pre-patch for The Lost City of Un’Goro expansion launching next week, but it also contains some other stuff, including a major update to Arena rewards. You can find a summary below:

  • The Lost City of Un’Goro – This patch contains data for the new Hearthstone expansion launching on July 8. All of the cards from the set have already been revealed. Learn more about it with our Expansion Guide.
  • Pre-Release Brawl – Another edition of Pre-Release Brawl launches with the patch. Players will be able to open their Un’Goro card packs early and compete with others in a special Brawl. Only Core Set, Event Set, Into the Emerald Dream (with the mini-set) and The Lost City of Un’Goro cards will be available in the Brawl. Play up to 6 wins or 3 loses for extra rewards. The first entry is free – further entires cost 300 Gold, 400 Runestones or 2 Tavern Tickets. We’ll have a more in-depth coverage of the Brawl with some best early performing decks soon.
  • Introducing Pets – A new type of cosmetic is releasing together with the expansion – pets. The first one is King Krush, and honestly, it looks pretty impressive. You can play with it, pet it, it levels up and unlocks new skins, even adds a new victory/defeat screen. However, the problematic part is how its acquired – you need to use a “gacha” mechanic with first pull being free and next ones becoming more and more expensive. While your chances to get the pet increase with each pull, they are still very slim until the last pull – and all of them cost $158 in total. Yikes. You can read more in-depth coverage of the pets here.
  • Arena Updates – A new Arena rotation will start when the patch releases, retiring all of the previous runs (and thus compensating players with Tavern Tickets). The new drafting pool will once again be custom (hand picked cards from all the expansions, including The Lost City of Un’Goro cards available early). What is more important, though, are the changes to economy. After new Arena has launched in 32.4, the biggest player complaint was that it became a massive Gold drain. Players who previously could go infinite now had a big Gold deficit. To address this, Blizzard has moved a big portion of the “Crowd’s Favor” jackpot into regular Gold rewards, and also added more Tavern Tickets for 10+ wins runs (previously you would still only get your 2 Tickets back even if you went 12-0). I didn’t have enough time to analyze the rewards in-depth, but they definitely look like a step in the right direction.
  • Constructed & Battlegrounds Updates – We have small updates for Constructed and BG. In Constructed, Raptor Herald has evolves and now has an extra Kindred effect. In BG, two Anomalies got their appearance rate significantly reduced.
  • New In-Game Event – Patch notes showcased the upcoming in-game event – “The Lost City of Un’Goro”. It’s another “choose one” type of event – while all of the regular rewards (15 card packs!) are the same between them, depending on which one you pick you get a different Hero skin (Brann, Finley or Reno).
  • Bug Fixes & Game Improvements – Just like every major patch, 32.0 also launches with TONS of bug fixes and smaller QoL changes. I assume that since it’s a massive patch, it will also introduce a bunch of new issues, but we’ll have a separate post for those after the patch’s release. Some interesting changes include capping Evolve effects at 10 mana (so if you evolve anything at or above 9 mana, it will transform into a random 10-drop) and Locations that summon minions disappearing first before doing the summoning (so now they will work if you use their last charge on a full board).

Arena Updates

On July 1, with Patch 33.0, all ongoing Arena runs will end and a new Arena season will begin. This season will feature a curated card pool for each class with cards coming from across all sets. Play with new cards early! Cards from the Lost City of Un’Goro will be incorporated into the card pool a week before the new expansion releases on July 8. All of the new Quest cards from the Lost City of Un’Goro, as well as some returning Quests, will be draftable and come with five support cards in their Legendary Bucket.

Dev Comment: After listening to player feedback, we’ve updated the rewards for Underground Arena, with a focus on making it easier to earn back your entry costs through deep runs. By further streamlining the reward structure and reallocating some of the Crowd’s Favor, we were able to provide better gold and ticket payouts, bringing back more of that “infinite run” feeling that’s been a hallmark of the classic Arena experience. We’ll be monitoring how things play out and will continue to adjust as needed.
