The Void Singularity Chalkboard

Official Description for The Void Singularity

Beyond the Void’s event horizon, all your minions become crushed into a single powerful entity of light. Build a deck and sacrifice your minions to The Void!

General Information

  • You get one Standard card pack for winning your first game this week.
  • This is the third time we see this Brawl. Last time we’ve seen it on January 30, 2019.
  • It’s a PvP Brawl.
  • It’s a build your own deck Brawl.
  • The Brawl’s format is Wild.
  • At the end of the turn, all of your minions are destroyed and formed into a single minion, combining all of their stats.
  • The combined minion has no extra keywords or effects, which means that minions with Divine Shield, Taunts, Auras etc. aren’t very effective.
  • Deathrattle minions and single target removals are most powerful – Deathrattle minions are very easy to trigger, while single target removals can be used to deal with a big Void Singularity.

Priest seems to be the most popular and probably also the best hero for this tavern brawl.
The deck utilizes the aspects of this Brawl quite well: many creatures die and most of the time the opponent has exactly one big minion.
deathrattle minions that you want to trigger immediately (Foul Egg, Serpent Egg, Infected Peasant, Haunting Nightmare, Pozzik, Vrykul Necrolyte’s target) cover the early game.
Korrak the Bloodrager (mvp), Magatha (no spells!) and Famished Fool generate value in the midgame.
Big Game Hunter, Sinrunner, Convincing Infiltrator, Najak Hexxen and both types of Sylvanas snipe the enemy’s Void Singularity.
Rivendare, Warrider was an attempt to have outs against the most defensive opponents like Blood Death Knight, but there are probably better options
Mind Eater was given the nod over Dead Ringer, but I think they are equally good
Haunting Nightmare could theoratically be replaced by any 3-drop that has a decent deathrattle like Shadowed Spirit, Student of the Stars, or by Plagiarizer)

There are also some minions with high stats and drawbacks that are negated by the void transformation (Humungous Razorleaf, Imposing Anubisath, Incorporeal Corporal) that were also popular, but I rather included minions that left me with extra creatures during my opponent’s turn to make it more difficult for Sylvanas Windrunner and Sinrunner to Hit my Void Singularity

Adding Xyrella, the Devout to the deck (cutting an Infected Peasant) improved the deck a lot. The battlecry (repeat all deathrattle effects) usually gives you multiple Korraks, and the hero power allows you to snipe enemy Korraks every other turn.
(Speaking of Korrak, I am so afraid of Korrak that I even consider adding Ruststeed Raider, Steel Rager or Faceless Corruptor to the deck. Ruststeed would leave a 5/5 after killing Korrak, because it does not lose its attack bonus before going into the void)

Since many popular removal options target randomly (Sinrunner, Sylvanas Windrunner, Convincing Infiltrator), leaving extra creatures besides a big Void Singularity goes a long way. This makes Foul Egg, Haunted Creeper, Infected Peasant, Serpent Egg, Vrykul Necrolyte and Pozzik also valuable in the later game. Voodoo Doll on the other hand is a great removal tool in this tavern brawl that can not be deflected by extra creatures. Since Haunting Nightmare does not leave an extra creature behind, it should be replaced (probably with Plagiarizer).

Many control mirrors are decided by “I win”-effects like that of Rivendare’s horsemen. Death Knight has an advantage here because of Patchwerk, and also Theotar, the Mad Duke can steal a horseman from your hand and thus keeping you from winning through this route. Xyrella, the Devout gives you a second chance here by triggering Rivendare once more. Some players also used Steamcleaner as a tech card against Rivendare.
Another “I win” effect that I encountered was the Purified Shard that you get through Priest’s Seek Guidance quest

I have lost games in the most hilarious ways, like Warrior stealing my big Void Singularity and then playing Charge on it, attacking me immediately. Once a Priest used Zerek’s Cloning Gallery to find the 3 Horsemen from Rivendare Warrider immediately

If you’re Mill Rogue fan, this is the deck for you. Win rate 80% in 30 games. This deck is not the easiest but if you get Coldlight Oracle, opponents just don’t have tools to stop you.
Mulligan: look for Coldlight Oracle, throw away everything if you don’t get it – this is your key card.

After extensive research on the “Hunter Bug” (i.e. creating a deck that completely abuses the bug and running it through a few games), I think I have at least a general idea as to how the bug works. For simplicity’s sake, I’ll name the culprit “Jimmy”.

Jimmy must be a minion that reads “Deathrattle: Summon X minion(s)”. I *think* Moat Lurker works as well, but I haven’t tested it.
Jimmy must be ALONE on YOUR SIDE of the board. There can’t be any other minions on your side (including other Jimmies), but minions on the opponent’s side don’t affect the bug in any way.
Jimmy is NOT Hunter-exclusive; Jimmy can be neutral as well as class-specific (though I haven’t seen Jimmy as a class-specific besides Rogue’s Jade Swarmer).

So far, I think the best Jimmy is Devilsaur Egg. 3-mana 5/11 stats is absolutely insane. Savannah Highmane comes in at 6-mana 16/14, but it’s more late-game and less-likely to swing the board if you’re losing. By far, Hunter is the best Jimmy-abuser (oh gawd). Hunter has so many more Jimmies than the other classes and can completely stomp them with a good Jimmy. Plus Deadly Shot is insane in this brawl (and can completely shut down enemy Jimmies).

The bug brings some fun play to the table; you will probably want to make some unfavorable trades in order to have Jimmy activate, and cards such as Play Dead are nowhere near as strong as you’re more rewarded for just dropping a Jimmy than to drop Jimmy and proc his Deathrattle, causing Jimmy’s bug not to activate (in my opinion). But it’s definitely a bug and ye should proceed with caution if ye desire such rewards at the risk (but I doubt Blizzard will fix the bug, nevermind punish the abuser; after all, it’s only a 1-week event and can be polished next time around).

Had fun with this Warlock deck, pretty unrefined but hope someone will be inspired from the ideas in it and make it better!

Just a note on cards that I haven’t seen other people play and I think are pretty great:

Frost Elemental – pretty good as it stalls a turn for you in order to get much needed face damage

Faceless Shambler – It actually copies the stats of the Void minnion on board so essentially wors as a x2 attack and x2 health!

Tinkmaster Overspark – can be game changing for better or for worse, pretty jokes to turn enemy minion into a squirrel but can backfire obv

Over statted minions in general – such as Bittertide Hydra, Bonemare (+9/+9), Howlfiend etc etc

Deathwing – a great last-ditch effort to remove opponent minion leaving you with a 12/12

There’s one (game-breaking) bug in which the game will crush minions TWICE and double up on stats. For example, play a Savannah Highmane. Game crushes it, 6/5 plus two 2/2s. Crushes AGAIN in the same turn and becomes 16/14, because it doubled up on Highmane stats (for some reason) and added the Hyena stats.

I’ve seen it happen with Kindly Grandmother, Savannah Highmane, and Abominable Bowman. It doesn’t happen every time with Kindly Grandmother, but I see it being common in the latter two.

It’s annoying, but I only played it once for the pack, so I wouldn’t care if it got fixed.

      November 29, 2017 at 12:53 pm

Oh, that’s what happened to me too. My opponent had Eggnapper and it destroyed it and the tokens. Weird bug.

    • Virilio0510
      November 29, 2017 at 1:41 pm

I played Hunter and I was lucky enough to draw 2 Savannah from stiched tracker plus the Savannahs itself. But when I put a second Savannah the glitch didn’t occur.

Maybe only happens when you have no board?

      • Helioshadow
        November 29, 2017 at 3:10 pm

It’s weird; it happens seemingly randomly. I’ll need to test to see when exactly it happens, but it seems SO odd that it would happen at such random intervals (and that such a common bug would make it through play-testing).

          November 29, 2017 at 11:37 pm

Yeah happened to me, we were both playing hunters and half our death rattle minions that spawned minions got crushed again resulting in some skewed stats. Hella weird game, the bug can carry you to winning, like it did for me when i chucked down a highmane and it consumed it twice :).
