Tavern Brawl – Yellow-Brick Brawl

This week’s Tavern Brawl is “Yellow-Brick Brawl”!

Discuss this Tavern Brawl on our Discord!

Official Description for Yellow-Brick Brawl

Each player is given Dorothee, which grants Charge to minions on one side and Taunt to the other. Build a 10 card deck and we’ll give you three copies of each!

Yellow-Brick Brawl Chalkboard

General Information

  • You get one Standard pack for your first win this week.
  • This is the fourth time we see this Brawl. Last time we’ve seen it on May 3, 2023.
  • It’s a PvP Brawl.
  • The Brawl’s format is Wild.
  • It’s a Constructed Brawl. You select a class and pick 10 cards, then you’re given 3 copies of each (to create a 30 cards deck).
  • You have a Dorothee on your board all the time. Minions you put on her left side have Charge, minions on her right side have Taunt. It’s an Aura effect so it’s applied all the time, Silencing or Transforming affected minions still leaves them with Charge/Taunt.
  • Dorothee can’t be interacted with at all – she can’t be targeted, damaged, destroyed etc. But she still takes a board slot, so you have 6 left.
  • The idea is to put sturdy minions – Divine Shield, Reborn, high health etc. on the Taunt side and then minions with positive effects when they attack or simply low health and high attack on the left in order to kill your opponent. But it won’t be that simple because they will also have Taunts up all the time.

Kayn Sunfury destroys the idea of this brawl, but Pogo Hopper is still king of it (and of many many other tavern brawls too)

Turns out an aura that gives Taunt to minions works really well with a card that rarely ever sees play. I am talking about Plaguemaw the Rotting!
This deck shuts down any deck that doesn’t have spell-based minion removal. Just stall until you have enough mana to throw out a Plaguemaw + any 1-drop (make sure the 1-drop gets the Taunt aura, NOT the charge aura). The following turn, protect Plaguemaw with cards like Robes of Protection and Obsessive fan!
    # Brawl Deck
    # Class: Druid
    # Format: Wild
    #
    # 1x (0) Aquatic Form
    # 1x (0) Innervate
    # 1x (1) Banshee
    # 1x (1) Biology Project
    # 1x (1) Crowd Surfer
    # 1x (1) Druid of the Reef
    # 1x (3) Robes of Protection
    # 1x (3) Spawn of N’Zoth
    # 1x (4) Obsessive Fan
    # 1x (4) Plaguemaw the Rotting

Another good deck idea that I faced was Evolve Shaman, because turns out whenever you evolve a minion, it re-gains the charge from the aura, and thus gets to attack again. The list I faced used revolve, which happened to be a great counter to Plaguemaw.

Great idea with this Plaguemaw, I will try it. Even better then the endless Dreadsteed 😀

This one’s cool also! The idea is to finish the “The Caverns Below” quest by shadowstepping Bloodsail Flybooter a bunch, play the quest reward and finish it with a Recurring Villain (on the taunt side). Since the quest reward always sets his attack to 5, he’s immortal!

Awesome Snobold&Catacombs combo! Miss the old dreadsteed? Well here’s the alternative! Lots of opponents conceding to this one after you get the infinite taunt.

I had some fun with the following list yesterday.
The idea is to cycle through your deck with Gadgetzan Auctioneer and drop some huge charged Edwins and Giants.
Shadowstep enables huge and unexpected bursts when played on Edwin/Arcane Giant.

    Preperation
    Counterfeint Coin
    Backstab
    Shadowstep
    Eviscerate
    Razorpetal Lasher
    Edwin VanCleef
    Sherazin, Corpse Flower
    Gadgetzan Auctioneer
    Arcane Giant

  8. Joopiter
    December 7, 2017 at 6:47 am

    1x Fiery Bat
    1x Patches the Pirate
    1x Crackling Razormaw
    1x Kindly Grandmother
    1x Scavenging Hyena
    1x Bearshark
    1x Southsea Captain
    1x Vicious Fledging
    1x Necrotic Geist
    1x Savanah Highmane

Considerable replacements: Geist => Bittertide Hydra (sacrifise board clear for more face dmg), Bat => Alleycat (1 less dmg but potential more buff to Hyena), Bearshark => Animal Companion (stronger overal, but inconsistent)

  9. quekjr
    December 6, 2017 at 8:49 pm

Necro geist is sick in this brawl, just put it on the charge side, any spawned ghoul has charge. Can be combo-ed with any 1 cost minion to board clear on 7 mana, and establish board presence.

    Vicious fledgling with charge

Southsea captain pulling 3 2/2 patches,

    Any jade-centric deck

  12. MädVillain
    December 6, 2017 at 2:11 pm

common this is total bullshit, all decks in the guide have wild cards and its a standard brawl… total laziness on topdecks side

    • David
      December 6, 2017 at 2:28 pm

Yeah I am SUPER confused, I can;t choose ANY wild sets when creating a Tavern Brawl deck this week but it seems some people can??????

      • Darkbru
        December 6, 2017 at 2:38 pm

Take a look at the date these were posted. This brawl IS standards only. The site literally just reposted an old post from when this brawl was brand new and allowed wild cards.

    • Evident
      December 6, 2017 at 4:25 pm

Hey, I’m really sorry about this. This is pretty standard practice for Tavern Brawls that are repeats, but when I originally edited the post I didn’t realize it was a Standard Brawl. If I had, I would have just created a new post instead. I did mention that we were working on fixing it, unfortunately with the new expansion coming out I haven’t been able to get back to it yet.

  13. KingArrudar
    December 6, 2017 at 12:44 pm

Pretty much the C’thun warlock on the bottom of the post.
But instead I will be using rogue and change dreadsteed with the 9 mana 4/4 that instakills and adds the slain minions stats to C’thun.

I have amazing success as a rogue with this Murloc/C’Thun deck for this brawl. Pacing and knowing when to lay down your ‘Thistle Tea’ is key. Try it out and tell me what you all think. 🙂

    1x Murloc Tinyfin
    1x Grimscale Oracle
    1x Murloc Tidecaller
    1x Murloc Tidehunter
    1x Disciple of C’Thun
    1x Twilight Elder
    1x C’Thun’s Chosen

    GREAT WALL of CHO (Shaman)
very strong + lot of fun + Dreadsteeds are piece of cake 🙂

    – Dust Devil (first piece of final combo)
    – Rockbitter weapon (second piece of final combo)
    – Runic Egg (just for cheap draw)
    – Loot Hoarder (just to trade and draw)
    – Nerubian Egg (double taunt)
    – Ancient Watcher (cheap taunt)
    – Eerie Statue (even better cheap taunt)
    – Flamewreathed Faceless (powerful charge for removals)
    – Lorewalker Cho (trolling enemies = lock or get opponent spells)
and finaly – EARTH SHOCK !!! (counter to Dreadsteed and surprising activator for Eeerie Statue)

Have a lot of fun with this deck. No auto-concede againts Warlock. Many interesting situations (mostly caused by presence of Cho)

    Enjoy 😉

PS: Drawing cards are as cheap as possible, because of Overload. Also do not keep Dust Devil in opening hand. You want to keep it for final blow 😉

    – Barnes
    – Piloted Shredder
    – Feugen
    – Stalagg
    – Cairne Bloodhoof
    – Sylvanas Windrunner
    – Kel’Thuzad (had Ragnaros the Firelord at first but then switched to KT. KT seems to be better)

    Undercity Huckster

you guys have all been running bad decks…. the best deck by far is malygos rogue in this brawl, i have had like a near perfect win rate with it and have been running

    malyogos
    auctioneer
    barnes
    emporer
thalnos (could do something else like loot hoarder)
    tomb pilligaer
    sinister strike
    eviscerate
    shiv

the only real weakness is against zoo like decks that will kill you really earlyand if you dont draw minions
    prep

The Echo Giants Mage deck wrecks Dreadsteeds. You’re sure to have 3+ polymorph effects to remove Dreadsteeds permanently. The only possible situation where it could lose is if no polymorph effects were pulled from Cabalist’s Tome and the Warlock got an extra Dreadsteed from Bane of Doom. But otherwise, Giants > Dreadsteed.

    • Ragnarok
      November 3, 2016 at 10:41 am

How many dreadsteed decks have you played against? I have encountered over 10 echo mages so far and, well i guess they just played wrong.

    • David

I am SOOOOOO fricken confused, how are people playing Dreadsteeds!?!?!? its a wild card and as far as I can tell this is a standard brawl, I cant choose any wild sets………

  27. Arvin
    November 2, 2016 at 9:38 pm

C’thun seems slow, but is good for warrior (with 3 brawls lol).. also because of the tripled minions I got him to reach more than 20 attack.. Clears the board and charges face for the kill..

    Slow but FUN!!

  28. Anonymous
    November 2, 2016 at 9:34 pm

Tried building around C’thun.. in turn 10 he’s 20/20 (or more) because of the duplicated minions.. does 40 damage (or more!) total…

Clears the board then charges the opponent’s face for the kill.. lol
    SEEMS SLOW BUT FUN!!

  29. ZombieToken
    November 2, 2016 at 7:18 pm

Every deck is a Dreadsteed deck. So here’s what I’m toying around with (in its current evolution):

    Silence
    Resurrect
    Shadow Word: Pain
    Ironbeak Owl
    Shadow Word: Death
    Shadow Madness
    Onyx Bishop
    Cabal Shadow Priest
    Sylvanas Windrunner
    The Black Knight

You have more Dreadsteeds than the Dreadsteed deck does.

Aviana, innervate, Alexstraza, Ancient of war

    This rules.

Lotsa kill comboa w 3 aviana and 3 qlexstraza

Used a freeze Mage with Ice lance, frost bolt, Thalnos, medivhs valet, Frost nova, ice block, forgotten torch, arcane intellect, fireball, polymorph. Polymorph slot could be something different, haven’t experimented though.

A slow but fun “counter” to Dreadsteel is Mekgineer Thermaplugg. Why would you attack face when your Leper Gnomes can do all the work?

  33. GoonSquad
    November 2, 2016 at 2:48 pm

I used the Patron Warrior list but with Ironbeak Owl instead of Blood Warriors

  34. Kaluosi
    November 2, 2016 at 2:23 pm

Try Evolve Shaman, things that get evolved gain the effects of Dorothee, so it becomes a extreme tempo swing when paired with charge.

    Here’s my list:
    -Tunnel Trogg
    -Evolve
    -Totem Golem
    -Nerubian Egg
    -Tidecaller Bilefin
    -Ancestral Knowledge
    -Pantry Spider
    -Coldlight Oracle
    -Master of Evolution
    -Spellbreaker

  35. foresmac
    November 2, 2016 at 11:55 am

I did a Deadsteed Warlock that worked well for me:
    Leper Gnome
    Power Overwhelming
    Dark Peddler
    Darkshire Councilman
    Drain Life
    Shadow Bolt
    Void Terror
    Dreadsteed
    Kara Kazham!
    Dr Boom

Im cheating with Dreadsteed, its broken

  37. WingedScribe
    November 2, 2016 at 10:44 am

Dreadsteed Warlock becomes even more ridiculous if you pair it with Violet Illusionist. You can start to throw in cards like Pit Lord and Flame Imp without needing to worry about their battlecries. Plus, if you go into fatigue, you’re virtually invulnerable.

  38. winkylinks
    November 2, 2016 at 10:43 am

    Resurrect Priest

Resurrect does really well because it over powers the board with both a charge minion and a taunt minion making it incredibly difficult for the opponent to counter the sticky/high health minions

    Resurrect
    Nerubian Egg
    Emperor Cobra
    Injured Blademaster
    Piloted Shredder
shifting shade (i really want to replace this guy but not sure with what)
    Onyx Bishop
Black Knight (not sure if hes worth, i sort of want to replace)
    Dr Boom
    Sea Giant

Good deck, try it out before you judge. it really ramps up between turns 3-7

  39. lol
    November 2, 2016 at 10:23 am

Astral druid is pretty fun. With 3 copies of astral and innervate your chance of drawing both in the first two turns is pretty good. A charging deathwing that clears the board or ragnaros with taunt by turn 3 is such a nightmare for your opponent.

    dreadsteed infinite taunt broken

  42. TacoRocco
    November 2, 2016 at 9:33 am

Dreadsteed is insane, so people need to pack silence for that. On taunt side, it is an impassable 1/1 minion. On charge side, it can infinitely attack and just wipe a board. It depends on which side is taunt and which is charge and how the Dreadsteed resummons.

    Aggro Shaman:

    Argent Squire
    Dust Devil
    Spirit Claws
    Tunnel Trogg
    Lava Shock
    Maelstrom Portal
    Totem Golem
    Whirling Zapomatic
    Lightning Storm
    Flamewaker

Put the windfury on the charge side and bigger things on the health side if you need them, save if you lose board and try to clear taunts with board clear.

    Two words:
    Patron Warrior.
    Thank me later.

Deck good, list bad. I’ve been playing Patron since a minute after this brawl came out and my current list is:
          Frothing Berserker
Spellbreaker (Ironbeak dies to your own whirlwinds so it’s pretty bad)
          Fiery War Axe
Death’s Bite (how were you missing this?)
          Acolyte of Pain
          Whirlwind
          Emperor Thaurrisan (discount your combos)
          Inner Rage
Armorsmith (Holds the board really well and buys lots of time)

The last slot has been flipping around but I think Battle Rage is better than Execute or Unstable Ghoul, which were my other choices.

The only decks I’ve been struggling against are Feugen/Stalagg decks, but for the most part they are slow so you can still steal wins with Frothing combos.

It basically plays like Pre-Nerf patron warrior. Enjoy it!

Good list, it just misses Patron.. Just that.

That’s awkward. Lmao I guess Patron is probably better than battle rage, but that explains why I keep not drawing patrons -_-
