Mulligans

General Mulligans

As normal in Tempo Mage, you want to mulligan for your low costs minions. After you have a couple of those you can keep cheap spells such as Arcane Missiles, Frostbolt and Primordial Glyph.

Introduction

This deck takes the traditional Tempo Mage list and updates it based on the new cards released in Journey to Un’Goro and the cards that are rotating to Wild. The deck is losing several key cards, most notably Flamewaker, Arcane Blast and Azure Drake. However, Journey to Un’Goro does give Tempo Mage several new tools to work with! This deck description assumes the reader is familiar with the basic concepts of the Tempo Mage archetype and instead focused on the new additions.

Notable cards

This deck utilises a package of five secret-related cards that synergise together well. Arcanologist has a strong body and also acts as card draw, guaranteeing the drawing of the only secret in the deck, which is one copy of Ice Block. This secret provides one extra turn for Tempo Mage to find the burn to finish the game and also acts as a guaranteed activator throughout the game for Medivh's Valet, which with its 2/3 body and battlecry of 3 damage generates tremendous tempo.

Primordial Glyph is similar in many ways to Unstable Portal that was a staple of Tempo Mage decks for several years. While the mana reduction is not as high as Unstable Portal, the card has a discover effect rather than being random giving you a greater chance of finding the spell you really need in any given situation. The card also synergises well with Mana Wyrm, Sorcerer's Apprentice and Archmage Antonidas.

Burgly Bully fills the gap left by Azure Drake. The card has a strong body and the Coin spells it can generate provide fuel for Archmage Antonidas and can also allow you to play Firelands Portal on Turn 6.

The new card Meteor has been selected over Flamestrike due to its lower mana cost and greater flexibility. Previously Tempo Mage had difficulty dealing with threats with very large health due to the lack of hard removal in the deck; this card can be used to clear one large threat or provide an AOE effect fairly similar to Flamestrike.
