Freeze Mage is a skill intensive deck that stalls the opponent’s board until it’s able to use Alexstrasza and/or generated Fireballs from Archmage Antonidas to finish the opponent. Freeze Mage has been criticized in the past for being a non-interactive deck. The deck plays few minions, and will generally only fall to single minion tempo decks or decks like Control Warrior and Patron Warrior that can armor out of danger.

Freeze Mage Deck List Update – April 2016 (Season 25)

Cone of Cold is a spot that’s flexible. You could play a second Blizzard or Flamestrike in this spot.

Freeze Mage Mulligan Guide and Strategy

The mulligans for Freeze Mage are generally looking for cards that draw and cycle through your deck. These cards include: Loot Hoarder, Mad Scientist, and Acolyte of Pain. Arcane Intellect is only kept in particular matchups, you would want to keep it against Druid and control oriented decks (Warrior and Priest). Emperor Thaurissan is also worth keeping if you know you’re playing against control. Frostbolt can be kept if playing against Warlock Zoo, Mech/Tempo Mage, or Hunter.

Freeze Mage Tech Cards

Deck lists tend to be pretty standard, but you’ll occasionally see Cone of Cold thrown in the mix to further punish minion based decks.  Antique Healbot is another card that tends to come and go depending on the users preference. A single Loot Hoarder is the card that is generally removed from the deck to make way for Healbot. If you’re facing a lot of Warlock Zoo or Aggro Paladin an Explosive Sheep can be added to better your chances against aggro.

Freeze Mage Card Substitutions (Replacements)

Keep in mind that replacements for cards are rarely ever going to be perfect. It’s usually easiest to try and come close to what the card accomplishes, or double up an already existing card in the deck.

  • Bloodmage Thalnos: There isn’t much you can replace in Freeze Mage. A common substitution people ask for is Bloodmage Thalnos. Kobold Geomancer IS an option, but it’s not nearly as versatile as Bloodmage. The best replacement is likely just adding an Explosive Sheep.

Freeze Mage Combos and Synergies

Your AOE freeze or Frostbolt and Ice Lance can work as removal, but generally you’re hoping to save Ice Lance for an Archmage Antonidas turn.

Acolyte of Pain should usually only be played when you can get at least two draws. A common play is to play Acolyte of Pain and use your Hero Power (Fireblast) to draw a card. Your Hero Power is very useful to you to draw cards, you can ping your Bloodmage Thalnos or Loot Hoarder when things become dire.

Mad Scientist is obviously a strong card, but sometimes you don’t have Ice Block and are looking at a potential loss the next turn. You can choose to either ping or Frostbolt it to pull a secret from your deck.

Alexstrasza is typically used to drop your opponent to lethal range, but you can also use it to bring yourself back to 15 which can save your Ice Block or your life for one extra turn.

for a standard freeze mage where you drop the heal bot and mad scientists and replace with roaring torches and a pyroblast most likely. well i was wondering about how some people drop a loot hoarder and add a pyroblast but since i am already adding a pyro and i probs wont need two pyros because really you dont need any with archmage so i was wondering about YOGG-SARON, HOPE’S END as a hailmarry but i dont want to waist my dust on it if it turns out to be causing far to more harm than good

I don’t think Yogg is that good, I wouldn’t craft it, but to each their own.

What about -1 cone of cold and +1 pyroblast?

That should be fine, Pyroblast is a common addition.

How does this handle reno and antique healbot? Those cards can completely nullify the freeze mage combo

Now Freeze Mage is playing with a Pyro instead of Loot Hoarder. The rest of the list is OK.

May I suggest with the meta maybe an acidic swamp ooze or a really a Harrison Jones… I find Jones to be the best solution because it

    1. makes control warrior aka your worst enemy a tiny easier
    2. With the meta right now aggro shaman and their doom hammer
    3. AshBringer on pally
3 great reasons to include it… might be worth to replace (1) loot hoarder as every match doesn’t guarantee its usage.

Could you perhaps link me with a video on people using this at least rank 10 – 1… I have the dust, just don’t know if it would actually be good in match-ups. Thank you, much appreciated.

How about -1 blizzard and pyroblast? And a good replacement for alexstrasza? Second healbot? Or maybe a forgotten torch?

Antique Healbot/Novice Engineer for Bloodmage and maybe a second Blizzard/Flamestrike for Antonidas. It’ll be tough without Antonidas though.

Hello I just need to know real quick if this deck is still viable, because I´m about to disenchant all gold cards and most of epic card to craft him (I´m missing 5 cards, 2 epic, 1 legendary).

This deck is very viable, but it’s also difficult to play. If you’re a beginner then I would try a different deck first.

Hi, any ideas on what i could use instead of mad scientists?

would you coin on turn 1 if u have 2 mad scientists/loot hoarders or do you safe it for later to get a fireball with antonidas or to play more spells in one turn?

    • Mr.Freeze
      January 14, 2016 at 9:42 pm

If you have 2 scientists with coin in hand to begin with(as starting hand), ALWAYS coin out both scientists. It saves 6 mana and prompts better card draw as you dig deeper into the deck. Getting 2 secrets out of the deck also significantly increases the effectiveness of Arcane Intellect.

      January 15, 2016 at 4:48 pm

you don’t rely on tempo with freeze mage so you shouldn’t coin out a 2 drop for tempo that you can’t keep.

No, sorry! Alexstrasza is one of the key cards in this deck.

Second flamestrike and you can’t replace Antonidas.

      January 4, 2016 at 5:59 pm

Malygos works better. it turns the deck into an OTK

    • Antony
      March 14, 2016 at 6:52 pm

Yeah I don’t have Antonidis either and I run malygos as the second damage threat. I find this is pretty useful especially when you control the game enough to line up your damage threats in hand and reduce their cost with one turn of Emperor’s cost reduction. In such cases – even when they heal up after you play Alex – you can play Malygos into any combination of frostbolts + ice lances to hit for 17+ damage

        March 23, 2016 at 6:11 am

I have Antonidas but I was thinking in the idea of freeze malygos. Anyway Antonidas is so good and i recomend you to craft him in some point. A question to everybody, do you think freeze would work in standard? In fact it does loose just two cards, it s ture the deck will loose but also the other decks will loose.

Thalnos should be epic. The decks works fine without him as well

pyroblast is it really necessary for this deck ? I know that card have sinergy with Alextrasza, and I have all of the other cards, but I don’t have powder enough to craft pyroblast.

It gives you a way to finish your opponent quickly. But I see some freeze mage decks do not have it.
Freeze mage draws fast to survive and if you cannot kill your opponent when you out of cards then you lose.

Is Alexstrasza more important than Antonidas, and can the deck run without him? Since I can craft only one of them

    • Evident - Author
      October 31, 2015 at 4:58 am

I don’t know if you can play the deck without both of those legendaries.

    • Kisshoxpro
      November 1, 2015 at 6:32 pm

I’d say it is really hard to play without Antoni and Alex. As most of your cards are defensive, you need something to finish your opponent.
I suggest take both. Good luck!

How integral is Thalnos to the deck? I have all the other cards, and enough dust to craft either Antonidas or Thalnos. I would like to run this deck through the ladder next month.

    • Evident - Author
      October 28, 2015 at 10:25 am

I think you can live without Thalnos, but not without Antonidas!

  26. Kisshoxpro
    October 26, 2015 at 7:10 pm

After patron warrior has been nerfed, ladder mode are full of aggro decks.
This freeze mage has been pretty good against those decks, just funny to kick their asses.

    September 21, 2015 at 5:53 pm

Well, I’d say that sadly freeze mage isn’t on meta anymore.

    • Vigilant
      October 26, 2015 at 11:27 am

Could you expand on that a little bit? Freeze Mage interests me, and I happen to have all the cards for it save Thalnos.

        November 11, 2015 at 8:40 am

Freeze Mage still is pretty good. In my opinion its just a really hard deck to play.
A new cool card from LoE is Torch! Worth to learn this deck.

agreed. this deck is hard to play.
